Is Finland still worth it for an international Computer Science student who wants to build a long-term career there?

Hi everyone,

Ever since I was a kid, I've been fascinated by Finland. I honestly don't know why, but something about the country has always inspired me. The education system, the fact that it has consistently been ranked among the happiest countries in the world, the work-life balance, the nature, the culture, and the quality of life—Finland has been my dream for as long as I can remember.

I'm currently applying for a Bachelor's in Computer Science at Finnish universities as an international student.

However, I've been reading mixed opinions about the tech job market. Some people say it's becoming difficult for entry-level software engineers, while others say there are still good opportunities if you have the right skills.

I'm not looking for unrealistic reassurance—I just want an honest picture from people who actually live in Finland or have studied there.

A few questions:

How difficult is it for an international bachelor's graduate to get their first software engineering job?

Is the current entry-level tech market really that bad?

Does not speaking Finnish make it significantly harder, even in software development?

If someone works hard, builds strong projects, gets internships, and graduates with good skills, is finding a job still realistic?

If you were in my position today, would you still choose Finland?

I'm genuinely passionate about software engineering and I'm prepared to put in the work. I enjoy coding, I'm willing to build projects, practice algorithms, network, and do whatever it takes to become a strong candidate.

I'd really appreciate honest advice—both positive and negative. I want to make an informed decision before committing to this path.

Kiitos! 🇫🇮

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Doctoral Researcher

What I have noticed is that PhD supervisor tends to hire doctoral researcher or post doc from the same nationality as they are.

Is there biasness based on nationality?

Will there be scholarships for students who apply to aalto in 2027?

I’m an international student and come from a third world country. My family can afford me to go to Aalto if I get 100% off the tuition fees, but because of the rumors surrounding scholarship cut off I’m feeling a lil bit worried 😭😭😭

I am a senior data engineer/software engineer at a pretty famous company. I moved to Finland recently and have been back home doing regular talks and seminars to help students struggling in direction in getting jobs in my field (even connect with some promising prospects to push for referral at my workplace). I wanted to know are there some societies or events that I can be in touch with to plan something hing of the likes?

Laptop recommendations for Digital systems and design / computational engineering

Hi,
I’m starting Digital Systems & Design or Computational Engineering next year and I’m trying to figure out what laptop to get.
My main use for it will be school stuff. For example taking notes, coding, assignments, and whatever programs or projects I’ll need during the degree.

What laptops would you recommend? Do I need something really strong with gpu etc? If you’re studying something similar, what are you using and how has it been?

I already have a desktop PC at home, so I don’t needs anything crazy for gaming, but it’d be nice if i can play low system requirement games and watching series in my free time.

Thanks!
