DSD Recent Scholarship Cutoff

I'm a junior and Aalto is my top choice university. I just took my first SAT, the one from earlier this month, and scored a 1530, but I'm really worried that 1530 is just barely sitting at the margins of DSD scholarships. DSD is my top choice, and I can't go to Finland without a 100% waiver because my family can barely afford the living costs. It's a little late but I've been seriously considering trying just one more time in June. I believe that I can increase my score by at least 10 points as long as I stay stress-free and finish my last practice test and the remaining question bank questions that I have, but I'm also terrified of tying my scoring or scoring lower, which I believe might lower my chances of getting that waiver. Should I try again in June, or save myself the hassle and just enjoy my summer? I don't know how scholarships have been behaving for DSD these past few years, so I need reassurance from any undergrads or seniors who're more experienced with all this. Thanks!!

Do I lose the chance of getting scholarship?

Hey everyone, I have a question. Appreciate it if you answer.

Let's say an applicant scores 1580 on the SAT and applies with this priority order: (1) DS (2) DSD

Last year's cutoffs:
DS: Scholarship cutoff = 1600, Admission-only cutoff = 1500
DSD: Scholarship cutoff = 1570 (800M), Admission-only cutoff = 1350

My question: Does the system place him in DS (no scholarship) and completely ignore DSD? Meaning — to receive 2nd choice with scholarship, do you have to fully fail/get rejected from the 1st choice altogether? or they will give him options: DS(no scholarship) vs DSD (with scholarship)

I know this is a bit of an extreme edge case. Just genuinely curious how the system handles it.

Tell me about the heavy group work.

The deadline is fast approaching to accept my surprise waitlist offer for a masters program in the arts. But one thing is holding me back: I really struggle with group work.

I am an autistic millennial guy from the U.S. with a computer science undergrad. My first college experience did not have a lot of group work, but the 2-3 projects that did were miserable for me. Now I work in a startup (and have for the past 11 years), so I'm definitely more and more accustomed to working with all kinds of people.

Still, I'm worried I may not be cut out for this, as badly as I want to attend Aalto otherwise.

My questions for current or former students:

  • Did you regularly have to arrange meetings outside of class to get group assignments done, or was most of the work handled during class hours?
  • Fellow autistics (or extreme introverts): Did you find the heavy group work difficult to adjust to? Did you find help or mentorship to get through this?

Do most students live alone?

I am looking at housing on AYY. It seems that the majority of listings are for studios or one bedrooms. Does this mean most students live alone? Curious about your experience!

What is the bidet shower, dishwasher cupboard and washing machine space options on AYY housing?

Foreigner here! I think the dishwasher cupboard is that cabinet above the sink with the wire rack so cutlery air dries and drips water into the sink.

Does washing machine space mean there is in-unit washing machine?
No idea what bidet shower means. I know what a bidet is and I know what a shower is but what do they do together?

Courses from ELEC that are doable with no prior experience

Hello everyone,

I will be studying at ELEC next semester during my study abroad term. I am actually a computer science major (just finished my Bachelor's) but my home university doesn't have an agreement with the CS school at Aalto, so I was mostly only able to choose courses from ELEC. In particular I am interested in whether the following courses are doable for students who have no prior experiences in electrical engineering, and also no prior knowledge in C/C++:

- Signals and Systems

- Programmatic Hardware Design

- Embedded-Real Time Systems

Of course I only chose these because they have no formal/necessary prerequisites, however I worry they could still be too difficult for me. Can anyone give me an educated opinion on this?

Servin Maijan Tie and Servinkuja experiences

I’m interested in hearing about people’s experiences living on Servin Maijan Tie and Servinkuja.

Is the area quiet, and are there many disturbances? I’ve heard that the area around Jämerantaival is noisier and has more problems related to peace. How are the streets compared to Jämeräntaival?

Occasional noise is obviously fine, since it is a student area after all. I mainly mean constant disturbances and ongoing noise.

Would you recommend applying for apartments on those streets?

Any suggestions on whats the best place and quite easy travel to aalto?

Looking for day-to-day experiences of autistic students (especially grad students)

Hi there. I'm a slightly-older (millennial) guy from the U.S. who just got offered admission from the waitlist in the New Media masters program.

I got my undergrad in computer science at a large U.S. public university in 2014, and at the time I was aware/newly diagnosed with autism but never sought any assistance of any kind, nor was I aware of the possibility of any sort of accommodation. I muddled through and did well on paper, though it was not a happy time.

I don't think I will seek out accommodation since I seem to survive well in academic environments and fear stigma, but I am very curious to hear about other autistic student's day-to-day experiences at Aalto.

In particular, is there truly a lot of group work and/or group projects? When I first got waitlisted, I comforted myself by thinking, "well, I really dislike group work anyway, so this is probably for the best if that cannot be avoided and is a large portion of the experience."

And did you feel welcome/comfortable overall at Aalto and in Finland in general? I have visited Finland before and absolutely love it, but that's obviously not the same as living there.

UW (udub) or Aalto?

I'm currently having a dilemma choosing between studying in a USA t10 (University of Washington CS) paid or at Aalto but free, so people studying at Aalto, do you feel satisfied enough with the course that you feel you might pick Aalto in such a scenario? Why/why not? (I should add that I'd prefer not to work in the USA long-term if I have the choice, so my question is more about the undergrad education and community itself)

Aalto or USF

I know, it may sound a bit strange to compare Finnish elite uni with medium-level US uni. But my case is a bit complicated and i need to choose one for sure.

USF - AI major. $11k/year scholarship for tuition (around $6k tuition lefts for tuition + ~$20k for dorm and meals per year)

Aalto - DSD major. No scholarship. Tuition + living costs = 12k + 8k = 20k euro per year.

The thing that forces me to choose is that i was firstly waitlisted from Aalto and almost lost my hope from it. While with USF, i completed most parts docs and even registered to the Visa interview.

It is okay for me to cancel the visa to USF, but i want to make sure that Aalto and Finland itself is a good place for working after my studies and it can open wide doors of opportunities.

Any ideas and suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you!

Prospective Aalto DSD student here. Request current students who are about to graduate with a 5-year tech degree to answer: How are job/internship prospects for the top 50%, and how effective is the 'working-thesis' route for landing final offers? Is the job market bad for top tech students also?

Aalto vs. LUT for Chemical Engineering (Bachelor)

Hi everyone, I’ve been admitted to Chemical Engineering at both Aalto and LUT. I’m trying to decide which one to choose and I'm really struggling.

Integration:

-Which university offers a better environment for international students to integrate and meet Finns?

-Does the smaller size of Lappeenranta create a closer student community compared to Helsinki?

Career: How do the internship and job opportunities compare between Espoo/Helsinki and Lappeenranta for ChemEng?

Established vs. New: Aalto’s program is well-established, while LUT’s English bachelor is new this year. Does this matter?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Is Aalto University HCI Master’s worth it for UI/UX careers in Finland?

Hi everyone,
I’m thinking about applying to the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Master’s programme at Aalto University because I want to work in UI/UX or product design in Finland in the future.
I wanted to ask current students or graduates:
How good is the programme overall?
Is Aalto well respected in Finland for UI/UX and product design?
Are internships or part-time jobs realistic during studies?
How difficult is it for international students to find UX/UI jobs after graduation?
Do graduates usually stay and work in Finland?
How strong does your portfolio need to be for admission?
I’d really appreciate honest experiences or advice. Thanks!
