Uni suggestions for studying history at a PhD level? (Europe)

Hello everyone! I am considering doing a PhD in history, and more specifically in the field of Ottoman/Balkans studies with a focus on nineteenth century transnational history.

I would be really grateful if you could suggest universities for PhD programmes in history (or say why you wouldn't recommend some). For now, I am mostly considering the EUI and the CEU even though the latter seems to be disliked by its students (at least on reddit). (In general, I would like to be at a uni in continental Europe.)

A bit of context: I did my BA in the UK in History, Politics and Classics, I'm currently doing my MA in European Politics and Society at Leiden, Jagiellonian and Charles University. Although my current degree is more politics-oriented, I will do my thesis on a history-related topic and hopefully I would be able to develop it further as a PhD project.

Please, please, please share any suggestions, tips, or recommendations you might have!

Thanks!

FIM worth it?

I'm considering applying to FIM for the winter start

I know TUM is a highly regarded uni, but as its a technical university, i can't tell if the FIM degree is worth anything or if its sort of a BS degree

I run a software startup that makes money and have a bachelor from Copenhagen Business School, so i'm not forced to get a masters but i like the idea of it i suppose

TUM mainly spoke to me due to the incubator and defense sector startup eco system in Munich, and i also want to learn german (i'm danish so 50% of the way basically)

I have two years of experience as a self taught software developer, but a degree in management so i doubt i could get accepted to any of the technical masters, although i would prefer that

Have you guys met any FIM students, what is the view of the FIM degree?

Any other recommendations for degrees or options are also very welcome!

Thanks

PhD in Anthropology

Hi everyone!

I am currently studying Anthropology in the US as an international student from Italy. i know I would eventually like to move back to a European country and hopefully get a professorship there. Now I am trying to decide where to apply for my PhD. Knowing that I would like to work and live in Europe, would you recommend I do my PhD in a European or American institution?

What I especially like about US PhD programs is that they are better funded and that you have more time to specialize in whatever you want; however, I know that doing my PhD in the US will prevent me from creating relationships in European universities, which might eventually help me get an academic job. Any recommendations?

PhD offer comparison: MSCA-DN in Italy (Trento) vs. PhD in Germany — need real net salary numbers from Italy

Hi everyone,

I'm a non-EU international student finishing my MSc in Germany. I have two PhD offers:

Option 1 — Germany: A PhD at the same university where I did my MSc (different professor than I have been working with in my Thesis).

Option 2 — Italy: MSCA Doctoral Network position at University of Trento.

In MSCA they propose large sum of money as super gross, but many taxation layers eat the whole sum up. Therefore, If anyone is currently doing or recently did a PhD in Italy, especially MSCA-DN, I'd really appreciate hearing (you can dm me for private answer):

  1. Your gross and net monthly salary
  2. Your contract type
  3. How much of the mobility allowance you actually keep after taxes
  4. Rough cost of living (rent in particular) and whether the salary leaves any room for savings

Also, I would love to hear anything about the city, locals, and the uni.

Help me conduct a survey!

Hello everybody! I'm surveying all teens on screen time, physical activity, and postural health. This is an anonymous survey, and I will use all the data collected over the next two months for my Class 11th Biology Project on Locomotion and Movement. I'd be grateful if y'all could submit your responses and share this Google Form with as many teens as possible. Thanks! XOXO

PHD Abroad

Hi! I was looking into getting my PHD abroad and wanted to know if anyone has any experience in transferring their European PHD experience to the U.S? I know it can be challenging but I still find it worth it and wanted to know what things will be required from me in the states.
