I am a UK-based academic who is planning to spend a few weeks in December (I know, I know - the weather) as a visiting scholar at a HE in Copenhagen. I have found a relatively inexpensive hotel for the stay (it's too short a stay for a university guest accommodation). But any tips to keep daily expenses low? And how to make the most of Danish academia during my stay there? I have visited Copenhagen a few times (absolutely love the city) but as a tourist for 2-3 nights max. For an extended stay, what should I consider?

My university research office has next to no experience with ERC (I am in the UK). And none of the senior Profs in my department has much of a clue either. So, I am a bit lost about how best to start or develop an ERC application for either StG or CoG.

UK social science academics with first-hand experience of applying for/securing an ERC StG or CoG grant: How did you go about this? What support did you get? Did you use specialist external grant consultant?

My work fits into sub-panel SH3, so something directly relevant to SH3 will be a dream, but any leads/advice at all on ERC will be much appreciated!

I am working on a paper based on an ethnographic study with a small-ish sample size (30) and wondered what is the best Sociology journal I can target. I am not based in the US, so don't have a great hold on what AJS/ASR publishes in terms of methodology.

Recently received reviewer feedback for an AHRC grant application. One reviewer has given us a 5 and another a 4. We have asked to respond within 14 days. To me, this doesn't look very hopeful. But what has been people's experiences with AHRC? Will a strong response document lead to competitive scores from the panel based on these reviewer scores?

Any experience either as an application or a panellist?

As part of annual promotion round, my university (non-RG, pre-92 with strong research focus) uses a criteria based approach across the main domains of activity - teaching, research and citizenship. Having spoken to senior colleagues, I have been told I will easily meet the research and citizenship criteria (have strong publication and grant records), but they recommended that I boost my evidence for excellence in teaching & student experience. My uni doesn't use module evaluation surveys anymore and some of the criteria relate to education strategy/leadership which I don't have experience of. I am in a social science dept, and lead 2-3 modules a year plus contributions to 3-4 other modules. Have no programme leadership experience but have been programme EE in other unis.

Any recommendations on how I can take a strategic approach to consolidating my teaching excellence portfolio? Could HE pedagogical research be a good way in?

I know the panel for AHRC-DFG Research Grants - Round Eight is meant to meet in September 2026, but has any grant reviewer/AHRC panellist heard about the last round of applications at all? The applications closed in early Feb 2026 and nothing from the AHRC since. Asking for a friend :)

I am trying to get a sense of what is seen as a good-enought h-index and what will be an excellent one? For context: I am a mid-career (6+ years from PhD) qualitative social science academic in a non-RG university.

Is h-index seen as a useful index for promotion?

So, I have one multi-entry Schengen visa that expires on 29th May and another multi-entry Schengen visa that is valid from 30th May onwards. Can I stay in the same country (just moving from one visa to another) without any problem? The whole stay in covered between the two visas. Anybody has any experience like this? Will the border control raise issues?
