A gift to an OAP

When I got into this hobby a couple of years ago, some really awesome growers gifted me with a range of cultures, including the brain mutation Shipwreck - Which is what the agar plate is in the image.

I'm a part of a few grower groups, as you can imagine we show off our work and discuss all things myco. One of the newer growers is an OAP, who is keen to learn. So here's a gift to help him on his journey.

It's the first time I've had such beautiful myc, after months of learning, trial and error, I'm pretty happy with the results I've been getting lately. From being anxious to pour plates, to looking forward to pouring them. I started taking this hobby seriously a couple of months ago, and the effort is paying off.

Agar recipe:

1000ml Distillled Water

20g Agar Powder

25g Sorghum Syrup

0.4g Nutritional Yeast

0.4g Peptone

Food Colouring Gel

🎄👻 THE WAIT IS OVER — ALBINO SMOKY DA GHOST IS OFFICIALLY READY 👻🎄

👻🍄 THE WAIT IS OVER — ALBINO SMOKY DA GHOST 🍄👻
Alright… I’ve kept this one under wraps long enough. 😂
Albino Smoky Da Ghost is officially ready for her introduction.
And judging by this plate, she apparently decided a normal entrance wasn’t good enough. 🔥
The structure and character showing here are exactly why I’ve been so excited to finally share this one with the community. There’s something special about watching a project develop over time and finally reaching the point where you can sit back and appreciate what’s in front of you.
A lot of patience went into this one, and everyone who has been following along knows I’ve been teasing Albino Smoky Da Ghost for a while.
Well… Christmas morning has officially arrived. 🎄🎁👻
No more keeping her hidden. No more sneak peeks.
It’s time to start showing everyone what Albino Smoky Da Ghost is all about.
If sliced bread had mycelium, it might be getting nervous right about now. 😂🔥
Welcome to the spotlight, Albino Smoky Da Ghost.

EMF recovery

Working on EMF research and received 2 Suillus cultures from a different university. Subcultured liquid to liquid from both bottles at separate times, and both appear to have gotten similar contamination - maybe present in low levels and began to sporulate when opened for subculturing?

Main issue: i need to try to isolate the Suillus from the asco spore contam. The sister university reached out and told me they need some back as it was the last of their archive.

Best approach in your opinion? I was thinking about carefully retrieving the suillus hyphal masses and rinsing extensively with sterile DI, then adding sections onto agar...

Chicken Incubator for Agar Plates?

Hello!
I have a chicken incubator that hasn’t been used and I don’t plan on using for eggs ever. We need a makeshift incubator to run a DTM culture on two kittens that have/had ringworm (week 4 of treatment) because we have to wait for a manufactured incubator to be approved by the budget. If it won’t work, any quick and easy ideas? Thanks!

Spread plate

Is this considered a good distribution using the spread plate method, or is there a defect in the plating?

🔥 FOTG Shakti ISO — This Plate Is Looking Sexy as Hell 🔥

Had to stop and appreciate this FOTG Shakti ISO for a minute because this plate is absolutely gorgeous. 🍄
The structure coming off this culture is what caught my eye immediately—bright white, defined, and spreading across the plate with some seriously beautiful symmetry. That feathered pattern around the outer edge almost looks like artwork.
This is one of those plates where you find yourself staring at all the little details. The texture, structure, and contrast against the agar make this Shakti a straight-up showcase piece.
Sometimes the culture itself deserves the spotlight. Shakti understood the assignment. 🔥🧬

Worth the risk?

Looking to transfer to four new plates. Should I take two samples from the two in large colonies in the first plate (3 o'clock and 8 o'clock) or roll the dice in some of the more contaminated plates? (Ex. 7 o'clock plate 2, 6 o'clock plate 3 or 10 o'clock plate four?)

Worth saving or dump?

Got some plates out of the fridge to start a new run, and noticed the best looking isolate is showing some bacterial contam.

For reference 2 other plates from the same date, both a 2nd transfer made from a clone and multispore (respectively).

What to do? Try to save the “3.1.1” genetics? I do still have the old “3.1” plate, but “3.1.1” was for sure the fastest grower and best looking morphology at the time.

Mush luv!

Transfer Tool

I spent a little time today making a transfer tool because I feel inept with a scalpel. Just tested it out on a few plates and I like it. Not too expensive to make. Just took an hour or so.

Smokey Da Ghost ×2 & Steel Magnolia — That Aqua Plate Is Beautiful 👻🩵

Had to put these three together because they’re each showing off in their own way.
The two Smokey Da Ghost plates are looking beautiful. I really like the different personalities between them—the growth has that flowing, almost feathered appearance with some gorgeous definition reaching outward across the plates.
Then there’s Steel Magnolia. 🔥 That aqua-colored plate paired with the bright white growth is just ridiculous. The contrast makes every little strand and branching pattern pop. It almost looks like frost spreading across blue glass.
This is exactly why I enjoy documenting plates. Sometimes you get one where the structure, symmetry, texture, and color all come together and turn something simple into a piece of art.

Three plates. Three completely different looks. All beautiful in their own way.

Green Toque × Universal Seven — This Plate Is Absolutely Dialed In 🔥🍄

Had to share this one. Green Toque × Universal Seven (GT × 7) is putting on a seriously impressive display.
The plate has developed a beautiful radial pattern with strong, defined growth reaching almost perfectly from the center to the outer edge. What really catches my eye is the symmetry—those long, clean lines give the entire plate an almost sunburst appearance.
Crosses are always interesting because you never really know what characteristics are going to show themselves. For now, I’m just documenting what I’m seeing and enjoying how this one is developing.
Definitely one of those plates you stop and stare at for a minute. 🔬🍄
Green Toque × Universal Seven
Two names coming together—and already giving me something worth documenting.
