Almost no apps work with esim?

Hello! I've been using esim with Airalo for years with no problem at all, however now in Malta and with esim installed I cant use my banking app, ring, Google play (only works sort of halfway) and probably other apps. It's like its being blocked or something it just dosent load.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this?

VPN works fine.

Do you install and activate your Airalo eSIM before flying, or after landing?

For people who use Airalo regularly: do you usually install the eSIM before leaving home and activate it after landing, or do you wait until you arrive to install everything?

No Option to Install

I've used Airalo for years, but recently I've bought sims for Luxembourg and Italy and on both occasions the install or share option hasn't given me the option to install, just a QR code to share the sim which I obviously can't scan with my own phone...

The Luxembourg sim I ended up logging into Airalo on my laptop to scan the QR code, but the sim never worked. Now I suspect the Italy sim I've bought also won't work... (so that's £24 down the drain) my phone is currently in airplane mode/VPN due to some issues with people hacking accounts. However I've tried this with the VPN and airplane mode off as well... why am I not seeing an option to install? I can't even manually install because my phone still requires me to scan a QR code...

Does Airalo eSIM work in China right now?

I’m moving to China in about a week for 2 months. I plan on getting a VPN so that I can continue to do my things that I usually do, and I heard Airalo is probably the best method. Is that true?

How seamless is the transition of service between France and UK?

Been using my eSIM in France the last few days with no issue, but taking the Eurostar to London tomorrow. Any issues when crossing borders?

What is the difference between Africa & Africa Safari e-sim package?

I will be travelling to Kenya for 10 days. Most of the days I will be in Nairobi, but a few of those days will be spent in the Safari (Maasai Mara Reserve area).

I went into the Airalo website and went under the "regional eSIMs" tab and saw options for "Africa" and "Africa Safari".

Which one should I be opting for?

I will also have quite a long transit in China on both ends of the trip. Ideally I would like to be able to stay connected throughout my entire trip for safety purposes. For that reason, would it make more sense for me to take the Global package?

Portugal eSIM in Azores?

Options from Airalo are Portugal or Azores.

I’m going to Sao Miguel, Azores for a week which s part of Portugal but the eSIM for Azores is more expensive than the Portugal version.

Can I just get the Portugal version and use it in Azores and save a few bucks?

Airalo is a complete disaster, stay away

I bought Airalo's 15 days 5G unlimited plan to use while I was in Brazil, and I honestly can't think of a worse experience.

Day one was already a mess. I was getting LTE speeds the whole time instead of the 5G I paid for. Day two was even better: half the day with no signal at all. Keep in mind this plan is billed per day, so I lost a full chunk of what I paid for and got nothing back. Their idea of making it right was a 15% discount on my next purchase, capped at a maximum of $5. On a service I'm already paying for and that doesn't work.

After that outage, the signal never really recovered, so I was without service most of the time. I reached out to support, and the first 30 minutes were handled entirely by AI, running me through ridiculous "fixes" like turn your phone off, wait 5 minutes, turn it back on. When the bot couldn't solve anything, I got escalated to a supposed human, who literally started asking me to redo the exact steps the AI had just walked me through.

Then it got worse. The agent asked me for 5 full-screen screenshots of my device settings. Full screen, no cropping. Those screens had a bunch of private information that should stay only with me. I said no. They told me they needed the screenshots to help me. I said no again and offered a few other ways to share what they actually needed to troubleshoot. The agent just vanished. No follow up, nothing.

So I'm still paying for a service that doesn't work and got ghosted by support on top of it. Don't buy from Airalo and don't trust them with this. Go with a more serious competitor that actually delivers and treats customers like people.

Issues for other people

I just traveled from Finland to Switzerland and my eSIM seems to not be working. I try turning off the automatic network selection so I can connect manually to another networks but it just automatically turns back on. I’m on Sunrise with 3 bars of 5G.
Wanted to see if anyone else is having coverage issues, specifically in Switzerland or France. Thanks

DO NOT, I repeat, do not get this service

I paid for 30 days of unlimited data and it drops on me constantly. The customer service is awful.

It always fails on me when I need most. Driving around Singapore and it shuts off on me, only causing me to get lost and have to pull over to find wifi to contact customer service which never finished helping me. All they said was have a great day and that was it. One time I can understand, but multiple times a day and sometimes for long periods of time like a few hours

Never again. Goole-fi, after my plan is up

Slow connection in China

Just a heads up I purchased the unlimited connection in China and it’s almost unusably slow for anything. Half the time my apps will timeout the other half they just won’t load. To the point I’ve been stuck on the metro unable to pay.

Weirdly I can watch YouTube later at night just fine over the connection. But as far as Chinese apps go forget it. I think it routes data through Singapore which may account for the slowness. But you may have better mileage with another sim and a vpn.

EDIT: support reached out to me but since I left China they are unable to evaluate the issue. So they made it more than right by crediting my account.

About the June 24 outage

Hey everyone. We had a rough day on Wednesday, and we know that, as a result, many of you did too.

During a partner's routine update, things went sideways, knocking out data for some of our eSIM users. To make matters worse, just as we thought it was fixed, a second outage hit. This completely flooded our support inbox, leaving many of you hanging on for replies.

We are really sorry. Losing connectivity while traveling is incredibly stressful. We let you down when we gave a false "all-clear," and couldn't get back to you fast enough. We will continue to improve our support processes, and in the meanwhile we are proactively reaching out to every single affected user.

Current Status & Quick Fixes

Everything is fully restored and running normally. If your phone hasn't automatically reconnected yet, give this a try:

  • Toggle Airplane Mode ON for 10 seconds, then turn it OFF.
  • Restart your phone.
  • Double check that Data Roaming is ON for your Airalo eSIM.

Still having trouble? Send our u/airalosupport team a message and we’ll sort it out with you directly. Thank you so much for bearing with us!

Speed expectations?

Is there a certain speed that’s promised/expected with the unlimited high speed US packages?

I’m getting 20Mbps download and 0.1Mbps upload on an unlimited “high” speed US plan (Chicago). As a European living in Asia that’s a completely unacceptable speed, not to mention the 400ms latency.

Wasted 1.5 hours talking to support - AI bot at first, and then fellow humans came asking me to repeat the exact same things the AI bot suggested 🫠

I’ve used Airalo successfully many times in other countries before with no issues so not sure what to do - easiest option is to just refund the whole thing with a chargeback

Service degradation: June 24th

Hi there!

We’re currently experiencing a service disruption due to an outage from one of our network providers.

This is impacting eSIM connectivity across a number of regions.

Our team is working closely with the provider to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

We’ll share updates as soon as service is restored.

Please reach out to our support team u/airalosupport here on reddit or our other channels if you need immediate assistance.

We appreciate your patience while we handle this issue.

Update [June 24th 12:16 UTC]: Service has been restored! If you’re still having issues, try turning on Airplane Mode and turning it off a few seconds later so your phone reconnects to the network. Alternatively, users can also manually select a network to reconnect.

Update [June 24th 16:46 UTC]: a new issue has been identified with the provider which is affecting users’ ability to connect. Our team is working with them to fix the root cause and restore connectivity as soon as possible. We apologize for the disruption and will update this thread as soon as we have more to share.

Update [June 24th 19:53 UTC]: The second issue was resolved with the provider after a rollback and users should have connection restored once more. If you’re still experiencing service degradation with your Airalo eSIM, restarting the device could force it to reconnect to the network and bring it back online. Reach out to our support team if this step still doesn’t work for you. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Data suddenly stopped working in Thailand

I have month of unlimited plan and it just all of a sudden stopped working 3 days in. Showed full connection, was in an area it was just working. Luckily I was able to make it to a Starbucks to use the WiFi (which you had to sign up for with a passport number, thank goodness I had that saved otherwise I would have been stranded!!). Been trying to get support for like half an hour and stuck waiting.

Absolutely ridiculous. Tried every measure, turning on and off phone, service, airplane mode. Literally 0 rhyme or reason the service I paid for just stopped functioning, almost leaving me stranded in a foreign country.

Edit: The timer for support keeps increasing, I literally cannot even get support for this service I’m paying for not working 😂

Edit 2: Support finally got back to me like an hour later saying it’s a company wide service issue and they’re offering a refund. You better believe I’m taking it lol

Edit 3: About 2 hours after this saga started finally got most of my money back for my plan, presumably minus the few days I used it. I’ll keep this in mind when I’m traveling again

Experience with the Sim block

Our experience coming to Egypt so far is mixed. The NTRA Telephony policy is to not block foreign Sim cards that are roaming. This doesn't seem to be the case. Our phones used Egyptian Sim cards last year and this year neither roaming or an Egyptian Sim card works.

Called the hotline with a borrowed phone and submitted a ticket and then proceeded to provide the information on WhatsApp. There is no timeline and it's already been 4 days without any answers. When I told them that my Canadian Sim card was blocked on the network they said that it will continue to be blocked until the ticket is resolved which is against their policy.

Be careful out there!

Airalo - 0 customer service.

Stuck in Prague with no data all of a sudden. Paid for 10 day unlimited data and it’s only day 3.

After AI support made me do a billion trouble shooting solutions, I asked for human and it said they’ll help me as soon as possible. It’s been 3 hours.

Went on WhatsApp. Same exact process and now left hanging with 0 reply.

Just perfect! Exactly what you need on vacation.

Edit: no helpful articles provided except for setting up the eSIM. Nothing about disruption of service. Not even a notification about technical issues. Just left to hang in the air.
