Where, when and by whom were the runes and futharkic writing systems used in history?

I have taught myself how to read and write the symbols of the elder futhark out of pure boredom and curiosity. I can plainly see that this method of capturing ideas once held great meaning and cultural significance. I am seeking to understand in which cultures and spoken languages these runes where used.
