i HATE shun from ao oni. HATE.
so, let me explain. Ao Oni is a pretty goofy horror RPG from 2008, with a big purple monster that chases you around. i have always loved this game for as long as i can remember, because it somehow manages to achieve horror despite its main antagonist being fairly silly looking. this character, Shun, does not appear in any of the games. he's actually exclusive to the light novels and the movies, and his existence RUINS THE ENTIRE STORY if you treat the light novels/movies as canon. the reason for this is because in those adaptations, he's a shy game developer who created a stupid horror game one day called Ao Oni. as it turns out, his horror game ended up being a real thing, and the people that go into the abandoned mansion at the end of town are now inside his game.
do you see how fucking stupid that is? how it turns what's a pretty normal horror plot played fairly straight into a stupid isekai centered around an extremely boring character? it's like the (new) developers wanted a moronic self insert into a different piece of media just so they could go, "look, that's me!"
it's worth mentioning that the original developer of the first game, noprops, had nothing to do with this as far as i'm aware. the company that bought the rights to Ao Oni, LiTMUS, is a piece of shit that has done nothing but make dogshit cash grab "sequels" that literally cannot exist within the timeline, because they don't actually care about telling a story. they just care about making money. i could make a whole separate post about how much i hate them, and i honestly might. but for now, I'll just stick to Shun.
the fact that the premise of the original Ao Oni game is played so seriously is what makes it so good. it wouldn't be half as good if the plot decided, "no, we don't actually want these monsters to be real, they should just be part of a videogame. can you imagine that?" i WANT the Ao Oni to be a real monster that exists in universe. i WANT the other Onis to be real monsters, like Fuwatti and Squatto, i do NOT want them to be manifestations of a videogame. i despise Shun with every fiber of my being. if he ever becomes part of the games and brings his dogass lore with him, i will not buy the games anymore. i will focus my entire life to raising enough money to buy Ao Oni back from LiTMUS and retconning EVERYTHING to NEVER have him be part of the lore AT ALL. FUCK Shun and FUCK LiTMUS.
