Esma Sultan Yalısı, İstanbul has one of the coolest restoration approaches I’ve ever seen

A fire gutted this 1875 Ottoman mansion on the Bosphorus and left nothing but the brick walls standing. And instead of rebuilding it to look like it used to, here’s what they did:

They designed a glass and steel box and suspended it inside the ruined shell using steel rods, keeping the two structures completely separate, not even touching.

From the sea outside you just see the old ruined brick facade. The modern interior is totally invisible. You’d walk past and think it’s still a ruin. Then you step inside and there’s this sleek contemporary event space just… floating inside the old walls.
