Tested Aetherion Max, Hisense PX3-Pro, and Epson LS800 — here's what made the difference

Spent 3 weeks going back and forth before picking the Aetherion Max. Quick summary since these three get compared a lot here: Brightness settled it for me. My living room gets afternoon sun and the Aetherion at 3300 lumens was noticeably better with blinds open. Triple laser color was richer than the Epson's dual laser, especially reds. Gaming at 1ms with VRR was the biggest gap — felt like a monitor, the others didn't. Where the others win: Hisense has a more polished smart TV interface out of the box. Epson had the best picture with zero calibration — true plug and play. Went Aetherion because brightness and gaming mattered most for my setup. All three are solid though, really depends on your room and priorities. What did you go with?

1 month with the Aetherion Max — the good, the bad, and what I'd do differently

No TV in the house, just the Aetherion Max for 1 month. Here's where I'm at. Good: Bright room performance is legit, stopped thinking of it as a projector after week Gaming at 120 inches with 1ms lag is stupid fun. Setup took 25 mins. Google TV works but isn't snappy — I plugged in an Apple TV 4K. Black levels are still a projector, dark movie scenes show the limit. What I'd do differently: get the ALR screen from day one. Used a white wall the first week, thought the picture was just okay. ALR screen made it feel like a different machine. Don't cheap out on the screen. Would I buy it again? Yeah, no hesitation.

Aetherion Max Concern

Curious if someone could share a close up photo of the projected image.

I took some photos before and after the DLP firmware upgrade. It seems like one of the DLP patches was to correct the disabled pixel shift tech? The tech that clones 2 1080 images and shifts them slightly to create a 4k image.

Before upgrade was the wall with light switches. You can see a grid pattern. Honestly before DLP upgrade I would consider it unwatchable if you’re less than 15 ish feet away.

After DLP upgrade is the other photos where you don’t see the boxes anymore (on my screen this time and not wall), I think due to pixel shifting now working.

However I would say It’s now watchable but still not ideal. I still see the pixel patterns but It’s not a deal breaker. More of an annoyance.

This is my second UST and granted my first is single laser as its 4 ish years old so my gut feeling is that the triple laser of the amax produces perhaps a much sharper image. hence seeing pixels? You could be 1 inch away from the projection image of my first ust and you can’t see a single pixel, but I think It’s because the laser tech is too old and It’s “softer” because of it.

But it would be nice if I could confirm.

Went from a 75" OLED to a 120" Aetherion Max — not going back

Had a Sony A95L, loved it, thought projector people were crazy. Then saw a UST at a friend's house and it broke my brain. Got the Aetherion Max, The size difference isn't just "bigger" — it changes how you watch stuff entirely. Movies feel like a theater. Sports with friends over is a completely different vibe. My wife actually prefers it for nighttime TV because reflected light is easier on her eyes. What I lost: OLED blacks are still better, not gonna lie. Dark horror movie scenes, the Sony wins. What I gained: everything else. 1 month in, haven't plugged the OLED back in once. Anyone else make this switch? How long before you stopped missing your TV?

Bought the Aetherion Max for World Cup watch parties

Original plan: big screen for World Cup, have friends over, go back to normal after July. Haven't turned on our old 65-inch since. The watch party thing worked perfectly — 8 people, 120-inch screen, everyone can see. But what surprised me is 3300 lumens handles our bright living room fine during the day. Only complaint: built-in speakers need help for groups. Grabbed a soundbar and it's sorted. Anyone else buy theirs for one specific thing and end up using it for everything?
