Boss katana with axe fx 3

I used the axe fx 3 with boss katana turned off cab sims. I did not like the sound from my precious posts I’ve been trying to get the axe fx 3 to sound less digital and so far through the EVH frfr can and katana I’ve yet to come across a single setting I really like for gain . Oddly enough I find the chorusy delay cleans to be beautiful but the gain sounds so artificial like I’m playing a synthesizer not an instrument that’s just my opinion . Would a live cab with a power amp sound much better . Or I’m beginning to think this thing kind of sucks ?

I built a tool to measure perceived loudness of presets — curious if this is useful to others

I had a problem I suspect many of you know: record a few presets, compare them in a mix, and even with matched LUFS they sit at completely different perceived volumes. A dense crunch pushes harder than a clean tone at the same K-weighted number — the ear isn't a meter.

I spent a few months figuring out why. The short answer: LUFS K-weighting treats all frequencies equally, but the ear doesn't. A dense midrange-heavy tone triggers more loudness perception than the number suggests.

So I built something. It measures perceived loudness using a psychoacoustic Bark-band model — same principle as Zwicker's loudness model — and gives you:

- The exact dB correction to apply to each preset's output to match perceived loudness to a reference

- A timbre-only "Character" score (presence, dynamics, stereo width) separated from volume — tells you if a difference is a gain issue or an EQ issue

- Cut-through score — how well the spectrum sits in a dense mix

- 8-band spectral balance with concrete parametric EQ suggestions

- Loudness curve over time (N50 sustain / N5 peaks)

Workflow: record the same passage through each preset, drop the files in, pick a reference, press Analyze. Runs in the browser, no install.

I'm selling it but happy to answer questions about the model or the approach first. Has anyone else run into this problem and how did you solve it?

CAB for AXE FX 3

I have an Frfr EVH cab it sounds like pretty bad is the best way to put it it sounds plastic fake and every distortion tone is so fizzy it’s not bearable. I saw on the andertons YouTube channel they demonstrate how FRFR cabs purely sound so fake compared to other amps with a modeler used as a head . I would like a recommendation for something better. At first I thought the AXE FX was the problem but now I’m realizing it’s the EVH cab . A live cab would probably be better I’m guessing if anyone has any recommendations for something that’s pretty versatile but not digital ide appreciate it a ton . Maybe a 1x12 or 2x12 at the moment I’m considering .

FM9 has more outputs than you realise...

https://preview.redd.it/5oajcxnmbuah1.png?width=1263&format=png&auto=webp&s=0388f76683220c3c4b331cb16606b059a0b171a2

The FM9 has 3 outputs. For me, 1 goes to IEMs, 2 goes to front of house, 3 goes to my on-stage amp if I have one. I like running stereo, and I like having front of house on a separate volume knob so I can keep sound guys happy without messing up my IEM mix. Done it this way for years.

Decided I wanted to try and use the four cable method to add my Kraken MK2 real world preamp into the FM9's loop. I'm using input 2 for the input from my Hog 2, but I have one spare input... but no spare output to use as a send.

...or do I...?

A stereo output is really just two mono outputs, isn't it?

So I split my signal after drive pedals, and send it to Out 3. I use the row controls in the Out 3 block to pan Row 4 all the way right. Right is now my send, I connect it to my amp input.

From the amp, I connect the FX Send into my In 3 Left port. It comes back into the chain and gets mixed with my emulated amps.

Now finally, I split my signal again right before the cab sim, and send it to Out 3 as well. I use the row controls, and pan Row 3 all the way left. Left is now my return, I connect it to the amp FX return.

It looks kinda crazy on the editor, but it works perfectly with no cross talk. I now effectively have 4 outputs, and so was able to 4CM in my real amplifier without changing my rig's configuration otherwise. My Out 3 knob needs to stay dimed, but I can control the amp stage volume with the master on the Kraken.

I thought someone might find that amusing or inspiring.

Axis - an Open-Source and platform independent alternative to *-Edit Software

Hi Folks,

i work on two Projects right now named ForgeFX and Axis.

ForgeFX is an Open-Source implementation of the Fractal Protocol acting as an API to control the devices.

Axis builds on top of this as an platform independent Editor working on WIN/MAC/Linux.

This opens a whole lot of possibilitys, because Axis is a Web-Based platform making it available on any Web-Browser in your local network.
Because we can run it on Linux and also inside Docker, one could hook the Modeler directly to an RaspberryPi serving the Editor and Edit from Tablet/Phone/Desktop, live and also with other people - great for live usage on stage.

It is in early development right now and as I only have an FM3 myself, all features are only verified for this. Everything else relys on Community contribution.

FM3 FM9 AxeFX 3 AM4
Windows Working Untested In Progress, needs more testing. Untested
MacOS Working Untested Working Untested
Linux Working Untested Untested In Progress, needs more testing.

Some features it has

  • Customizable Control layout for every block, including layout manager
  • Search every parameter for a block to quickly find what you look for
  • Quick Actions, bindable to every available control. Lets you control parameters directly on the block via scroll whell or mouse, and switch to every bind via swipe left right.
  • Advanced searches for adding blocks
  • A full fledged preset search with advanced filtering for used Block Types and specific parameters. (WIP)

Installation is as easy as grabbing the latest release of Axis for your OS.

Has anyone recovered an unresponsive axefx III?

My axe fx III got an update this week and I don't think I let the update process complete. I think I turned off early and when I tried to reboot, nothing happened.

The LEDs light up, but the screen stays black.

If I try to boot into the recovery menu, the screen is white and nothing happens.

Neither Fractal bot nor axe edit can find the axefx when I connect up.

There was no flash or an explosion. I did the update and it didn't work again.

I contacted g66 who said that I should open it up and press either side of the fan to check the processor is properly seated. I did this and it made no difference, so the next step is to send it in to a 3rd party repairer in Scotland.

I got made redundant a couple of months ago and am pretty worried about how much the repair might cost, and am wondering if I'll have to cut my losses and buy a cheap practice amp.

Has anyone dealt with a similar fault? Did you have to send it in? What was the cost?

...Thanks for the downvote?

Amp list website

Hey, I've made this https://rinkashimikito.github.io/ampdex/ for any axefx users to get info about amps used. Give me a shout if you like it and/or if you would like to see other stuff. You can report bugs as well!

I'm trying to get as much (useful) info on the amps as possible so if you have interesting links please share :)

Amp Models Used By Famous Guitarists Database

I started a spreadsheet that I'd love to use as a database for all the Fractal Audio amp models and the guitarists who have historically used them

FAS Amp Model Users Database

It's still a work in progress, but I would love any input on this. Comments are on, so feel free to add any guitarists/songs/albums to the document if you would like to contribute. I'd be great if you could add a link to some sort of article, photo, etc. I will periodically go through all comments on there and add them to the list.

Edit: you can comment straight on the Google doc by right clicking the cell

You can also comment links to this thread or DM me if you know any good websites/resources for this info. Let me know if you find any errors or anything that might be inaccurate too.

Trying to use Axe-FX II for computer audio interface, looking for latency advice.

Hello,

I'm trying to use an Axe-FX II as a USB audio interface for PolyChrome DSP and there is a noticeable delay / latency. This is my first time experimenting with computer based DSP. I have the current windows driver for the Axe-FX and tried adjusting audio buffer size but wondering if I need to upgrade or purchase a newer USB interface since the FXII is over 10 years old. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Is it worth it to re-visit factory presets?

I got my Axe-FX III back in 2021. At the time, the presets were *fine*, but they were all a little underwhelming. So I bought 3rd party presets from places like AustinBuddy, Kaneshiro, Alex Maiers, etc. I use these presets all the time and never mess with the factory presets.

But over time, Fractal has sent up numerous firmware updates and have updated their factory presets a lot.

Is it worth it to load the newest presets and see if they've improved enough to be added back into my setlist? Are the current presets notably better than they were 5 years ago?

Helix Stadium XL - Worth the upgrade?

I am currently using a Fractal FM3 (Turbo Mk II) and have been for the past 3ish years, but I am feeling limited by DSP and switches a lot lately.

Was using the OG Helix Floor before the FM3 and while it was a great unit, I got rid of it because it was just too large and heavy as I had to commute 2+hrs by public transport to our rehearsal space using 3 trains and one bus.

The Stadium XL seems to be a great evolution of the Helix, combining lots of features of different modelers
- same AiO approach of the OG Helix while being significantly smaller and lighter
- touchscreen (loved the idea from Headrush modelers and the NDSP Quad Cortex)
- buttons en masse that I can freely program like on the Fractal

As it is early doors in its product cycle, how good/reliable at the moment?
Is it worth its hefty price tag for a hobbyist, that just enjoys playing?

Bonus question:
Can it do a Rainbow Machine like effect (even if just through a combination of blocks)
For reference this is what I am looking for:
