What they don't tell you

This is not intended to be negative, just informative so that you're aware in advance if you're considering buying a BYD.

- The included granny charger is not 10A, it's only 8A (and it's a cheap generic Chinese charger, so may change based on availability). In reality, people often claim to get as little as 1.1kW from their included charger. Allow a little longer that the usual 1 hour per 10km.

- When charging from a regular socket, be aware that it may be on the same circuit as other appliances. Breakers are typically 16A, and if you start cooking dinner (using the kettle, microwave, air fryer, etc) whole charging, that could be enough to trip the breaker, so plan ahead.

- The digital key which they advertise heavily is not available to everyone outside of China. It's part of a digital wallet, and so far only supports Apple wallet and Samsung wallet internationally, so most Android users are unable to use their phone as a key.

- Charging in the rain is supposedly possible, but the 'brick' isn't exactly waterproof. I'd still recommend placing it on a brick with a plastic tub over that and the plug to your (tradesman quality) extension lead. And you shouldn't charge in a thunderstorm, so if there's one forecast, plan ahead.

- Driving range is estimated based on only the last 50km (and the current state of charge). If you drive a lot in slower stop/start traffic, it will give a much higher range estimate that will drop rapidly over you get on the freeway/highway.

Sealion 7 - Child Presence Detection warning

I have had several warnings (car beeping) when I left my dog in the boot of my S7 when I wanted to go into a shop for a quick purchase. I don't understand how to prevent this. I usually leave my vehicle running with the aircon on and lock the door.

It happened again today, but this time I also got an email which I only became aware of when I got home. It said:

Dear BYD Vehicle Owner:

2026-08-18 14:21. Your car BYD SEALION 7 identifies that there may be children or other living bodies left in the car, and there is a safety risk. The alarm is turned on now. Please confirm the situation in the car immediately!Note: You can cancel the alarm by unlocking the door or opening any door.

This is an automated email. No reply needed.

Receiving such messages via email is useless to me as I generally don't check my email when making short stops. Is there any way to have such emails sent by text/SMS instead? Also, how do others prevent the Child Detection from triggering when you want to leave the car for a short time (maybe up to 10 minutes)?

Drink holders

Anyone else peeved by the lack of drink holders? My Atto 3 has 2 small ones in the central console, which can't even fit a mug. Nowhere to put my water bottle as the holders are too small to both be used if a cup has a handle.

That and the boot I have to lift up are my 2 pieces of bad feedback in an otherwise brilliant car.

Has anyone else noticed how different insurance prices are for the BYD Sealion 7 vs Tesla Model Y?

I’ve been getting quotes from a few different insurers and the difference is crazy.

For me:
- BYD Sealion 7 Performance: around $120/month
- Tesla Model Y RWD: around $320/month, even with a high excess

I’m 35M, no accidents and no previous claims.

I don’t think it’s just because of performance either, because the Sealion 7 Performance is much more powerful than the Model Y RWD, but it’s still way cheaper to insure. Budget Direct quoted me around $120/month for the Sealion 7 Performance, while the Model Y RWD was around $320/month

Does anyone know why Teslas are so much more expensive to insure in Australia?

I really love the Model Y Long Range AWD, but at these insurance prices, it removes almost all the savings you get from driving electric.

Sealion 7 - parking sensors beep but rarely show distance

We've our our Sealion 7 performance for a couple of months, and we love it, but we find the parking sensors really odd, when we're backing up into a parking spot it beep as you get close to something, 1 in 10 times it will actually show a green/orange/red symbol over the camera screen with a distance marker like "45cm" but the other 9 times, it just beeps but doesn't show the markers.

Does everyone else have this experience ?

Sealion 7 - audio drop when going past signs/over the speed limit

Is there any way to turn this off? I still want it to beep to alert me, especially when creeping over the speed limit but is there a way to stop the audio from dropping in volume?

BYD Reliability

Curious to know people’s thoughts on the reliability of BYD, especially the BYD Sealion 6 Hybrid. I’ve driven Hyundai’s since 2016 and never had issues if kept serviced regularly. Tossing up between Hybrid Tuscon, Sportage, RAV4 or Sealion 6 if anyone is able to help. Especially if you’ve serviced a BYD and can attest for the build quality and reliability! Thanks!

SpotifyPlus patcher for BYD infotainment. Fully functional Spotify UI, LHS/RHS layout + auto-resume

https://preview.redd.it/abbrhzwkpojh1.png?width=1375&format=png&auto=webp&s=bb68617a18337ffef9b1d5dd15b7ea7ba92f17de

I’ve been playing around with Spotify on my 2023 Atto 3 because the OEM app is only partially functional for me. Home and Recent don’t load properly and it is quite limited, although playback/library still work. If BYD put a bit more effort into maintaining the native Spotify experience, I probably wouldn’t have needed to do this. My aim was just to bring the experience a bit closer to Tesla in terms of usability and polish.

I ended up making a small Windows patcher for anyone who has already unlocked APK/app installation on their BYD infotainment.

It takes a clean, official Spotify 8.9.76.538 APK and creates a separate SpotifyPlus version specifically adjusted not to conflict with the OEM version.

Main changes:

  • installs alongside the factory Spotify. it doesn’t replace or modify the OEM app
  • renamed to SpotifyPlus with a separate package so both versions can coexist
  • Fully functional UI with DJ X, easy to start radio of a song, lyrics, albums, artists info, etc. Font was enlarged to work better on BYD display
  • choice of LHS or RHS navigation/player layout depending on your preference/driving side
  • background playback restoration when the car starts

I’ve tested the RHS version on my 23 Atto 3 and it’s been working very well.

This is only useful if you have already enabled installation of third-party APKs on your BYD. It doesn’t unlock the head unit or bypass BYD’s installation restrictions.

For anyone understandably cautious about downloading a random EXE: the whole project is open source on GitHub, the Windows build is made automatically by GitHub Actions from the public source, and the release includes a SHA-256 checksum. The patcher also does not contain or distribute Spotify itself. You download the original Spotify APK separately and the modification happens locally on your PC.

Seal Excellence arrives next week, coming from nearly buying a Model 3

My Seal Excellence turns up next week after I nearly went for a Model 3, ended up sitting in a Seal and never looked back. Anyone got tips on what to check at handover, or early gremlins to watch for in the first month?

Question about disabling child presence detection

Just wondering if disabling child presence detection persists when the car is switched off. I know it re enables when you turn the car back on, but does it stay off for the period that the car is off? I sometimes stay in the car when it’s charging and I don’t like leaving it on just so it doesn’t raise hell when it detects someone in there.

Car is a 2026 Dolphin, though I presume the answer is the same for all models that have this “feature”

Also, I know that there’s something you can unplug in the roof to stop this but I have a strong preference against doing anything like that to the car.

Cheers :)

SL7 interior scruffing

Have had a new SL7 for about a week now. When I picked it up it had a dent on one of the doors, dealer fixed it up mostly, but because of that I was concentrating on that and did miss checking the interior more closely.

This is my first new car in a long time, do interior plastics and trims nowadays not stand up to scruffing/scratching as much as older cars used to?

I'm super careful, but already noticing small scruffs on the inside of the door and sill plastics. I can't see this lasting as long as my last car (17 years) without the interior getting absolutely wrecked just from regular day to day use.

Before this, I'd never even realised there was a whole market dedicated to kick mats and interior protection films!

Otherwise loving all the tech in it and enjoy driving it, just worried about the longevity of it now…

Dolphin Premium owners are you happy with the standard rear tint, or did you also add front tint?

Picked up my Dolphin Premium yesterday. Loving it so far.

I'm planning to get a ceramic coating done next week, but still going back and forth on window tint. The rear side windows and rear windscreen already come with factory tint on the premium version, but i'm not sure how much benefit I would get if I got the clear front side windows tinted.

Keen to hear from both sides:

  • Anyone happy sticking with just the factory rear tint, no front tint added?
  • Anyone who added front tint and felt it was worth it?

Cheers!

Shark 6 rust around bolts

Cab chassis sitting on dealer lot showing rust around these bolts. Not ideal long term and would be easily avoided. Rangers and Dmax on same lot had no rust in equivalent places

Finally found the Atto2 cabin fusebox!

I couldnt find reliable info about this ANYWHERE. Posting this to save someone an hour of their life. The manual says the cabin fuse box is "under the dash", then refuses to elaborate... I

Heres what you need to know: you cant access, or even SEE the fuse box without removing some interior trim.

First photo shows first trim panel you have to remove on drivers side, second photo shows the fuse box from same perspective.

there is ONE screw you will then need to remove, so that you can pop the second piece of trim: the steering wheel undertrim kickplate thing.

Finally, you will be able to access the fuse box.

Atto 3 EVO: Dealer showed me specs. Has anyone heard pricing/details?

I went into a BYD dealership recently to ask about the upcoming Atto 3 EVO, and they showed me a spec sheet that I haven’t seen published anywhere else yet.

What surprised me is that the base Atto 3 EVO seems fairly similar to the current Atto 3 Premium in terms of the overall proposition.

The more interesting version appears to be the Atto 3 EVO Premium, which according to the sheet will get things like:

  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Bigger battery
  • Longer range
  • Faster charging
  • More power / stronger performance
  • Some additional tech/features

That makes me wonder if the Premium is actually the “real” EVO upgrade, while the base model is more of an evolution of the existing car.

Has anyone else spoken to BYD dealers or seen any more detailed Australian specs, pricing indications or expected delivery timing? Curious whether different dealers are saying the same thing.

I’m currently also looking at the Geely EX5 Inspire, which is what makes the eventual EVO pricing particularly interesting to me.

The EX5 Inspire is currently around $46k before on-roads and already gives you 450km WLTP range, a 68.4kWh battery, HUD, ventilated/massaging seats, 16-speaker audio, lots of rear-seat space and a 7-year warranty.

So for those following the EVO more closely:

At what price would you consider the Atto 3 EVO Premium better value than the EX5 Inspire?

Would love to crowdsource what everyone has heard so far, especially if anyone has seen dealership material that isn’t public yet.

Atto 2 does not come with data pack

Despite the salesman telling me the car came with 1 or 2 years of data, Ev dealer group now says the Atto 2 does not have data package. Is this right?
I know I can hotspot to my phone but it pisses me off they can so blatantly lie.

Unsolicited comments

Hey all, had my SL7 for about a month now, but also had a week where I was driving an Atto 1 loan car whilst mine had some cosmetic transport dints fixed.

On 3 occasions now I’ve had unsolicited comments from (mostly from male boomers) about my car. Pull into the supermarket car park the other day, guy walks past and says oh a BYD, that’s chinese crap. I just laugh it off, but was thinking why do they do this. I mean I’ve never felt the urge to walk past a hilux and tell the owner that’s a shitty jap car.

As I said, I just laugh it off but it’s still annoying. Anyone else had this ?

BYD original charger VS Bunnings charger

We’ve got a Byd Atto 1 and currently using the charger supplied and charging around 1.1kv. I saw there’s chargers at Bunnings for $199 and claims 1.9kv with a normal 10amp plug. Anyone has experience if this is feasible and will give 1.9kwh.
