San Mateo County

Does anyone else hate San Mateo County or find it really boring?
I’m 23, born and raised here, and I went to college nearby, so I’ve basically spent my whole life on the Peninsula. But honestly, I don’t find it fun here. There’s nothing fun to do or really anywhere fun to explore. I don’t find anything exciting here.
Is this normal? Does anyone else feel the same way, especially if you grew up here?

Home renovation in San Jose for small 1950's house 1000 sq ft. how much to spend? how to find best contractors?

Hi guys,

I am purchasing my first house as a home buyer but it needs a lot of work. It needs:

- a new roof immediately and removal of current dry rot.

- kitchen demo + removal of current cabinets, flooring, countertops. need installation of new cabinetry, install of countertops, backsplash (same countertop as backsplash so no small tile work).

- new flooring for living room, hallway, and kitchen. We will leave bedrooms alone with original hardwood flooring.

- removal of wall in living room separating hallway and kitchen from living room. I believe it is load bearing, we would leave two small beams down rather than remove entire wall. Removal of small wall next to entry way-- non load bearing.

- removal/demo of current fire place to new modern electric fireplace. install of new fireplace and floor to ceiling PVC or marble tiles (24 in x 48 inch) for 1/3 of the entire one sided wall where current fireplace is.

- removal of old three panel bathroom tub tiling and addition of new marble tiling (24 in x 48 inch) that I will supply. we will keep same bathtub but put new tiling from tub to ceiling for the three walls next to bathtub. We will leave current vanity as it is in bathroom. New flooring needed for bathroom-- matching large tile from bathtub to the floor.

- removal of current old small standing shower, removal of small built in linen closet in the bathroom to open up more space and turn it into a larger standing shower. Needs new tiling and demo of old one. New tiling on floor and tiling to ceiling around the standing shower.

I was thinking of paying for all parts so I would just need to get quotes for labor.

how much do you think all of this would cost for a small 1000 sq ft single family single level home? I was thinking of just getting stuff from Home Depot, nothing fancy and keep all appliances as is. I will pay for the electric fireplace, all tiles, all supplies, all countertops, cabinets etc.

Also, on a separate note if you have any vendors, companies or contractors you worked with that you had a good experience with or a bad experience-- can you share?
