Young Couple Moving to Bay Ridge

Hi everyone! My husband (29) and I (27) are moving to Bay Ridge soon, and we're really excited! We are near the Bay Ridge Ave stop on the R train.

I'd love to hear your favorite local recommendations: restaurants, coffee shops, bars, bakeries, parks, hidden gems, or anything else you think every newcomer should check out. We'd also appreciate any tips or advice you wish you knew when you first moved here!

Thanks in advance!

Cat for Adoption

Hi all, reposting because I haven’t had any luck finding a forever home for a stray cat I found. She’s a wonderful cat, and I’m still hoping to find the right person or family to give her the loving home she deserves.

About a month ago, I found a very friendly stray cat and took her in. My original plan was to adopt her, but unfortunately things haven’t worked out with my resident cat despite several weeks of careful introductions.

I’ve followed the recommended introduction process (scent swapping, controlled visual interactions, treats, etc.), but she remains reactive toward my cat and would likely do best as the only cat in the home.

That said, she is absolutely wonderful with people. She’s affectionate, loves attention and cuddles, uses the litter box consistently, eats well, plays regularly, and has adjusted comfortably to indoor life.

A little about her:
Female
Approximately 6–8 years old
Spayed
No microchip found
Full veterinary exam completed, including bloodwork and stool testing (all normal)
Medical records available upon request
Very friendly

This has been a difficult decision because she’s genuinely a sweet cat and I was hoping to keep her. I’ve already asked friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors, but haven’t been able to find a home for her.

If you’re looking for a friendly companion cat and think you might be a good fit, please send me a DM.

Please also watch a video of her getting brushed, which she loves!

Hi moderators, feel free to delete this if this is not allowed.

Power outage

It seemed the power blinked out for a second on both sides of Bay Ridge around 3:15. Even the cell network seemed to go down for a few minutes unless it just got overwhelmed when all the wifi dropped.

Heatwave prep... all the free places to cool off in one map

Hey, everyone

No bs.. heatwave's coming and everyone's gonna be pretty miserable pretty soon..

Know your surroundings for things like pools, splash pads, fountains, anywhere to cool off.

Just share fore everyone's awareness. If you prefer to do regular Google searches, NYC Parks webs or other means that's fine.

But here some consolidation for you. All the city data in one place. No jumping around just pull it up and see what's near you.

So,

Obviously if you don't need it, don't use it. But if you're gonna be out there the next few days, might as well not waste time hunting. you're not losing anything by trying it out.

Stay hydrated, stay cool. <- Check out if want.

How do I get in playing with you Pickleball folk, and is it free? I’ve been traveling to northern Brooklyn to play in facilities for open plays.

M30 looking for friends in the area.

Hi there,

I’m looking to just maybe connect with anyone in the neighborhood. I’ve been in NYC for 10 years and Bay Ridge for 4, but I’ve struggled to make friends and get myself out there more tbh. I’m a musician, I’m into comics, movies, video games, anime and just chilling outside in general. I’ve also experienced a bad break-up recently that has my self confidence at a low and I’m just trying to rebuild my life. So yea, I’d love to just get out there and connect with new folks.

I live in the upper 70’s on 4th ave but really cool to travel wherever in and out of the neighborhood. 🙏🏻

Raccoons 🦝

I moved to the neighborhood only a month ago, and am overjoyed by hearing these little weirdos rooting around every night, fighting with the very sweet indoor/outdoor cat and generally being little goofs. I've loved raccoons my entire life as a New York native and missed seeing cat sized ones.

Are there other animals that more common in bay ridge that I haven't come across yet?

I've always loved the little fellas spirits and it's an absolute joy to hear them doing cat impersonations and generally enjoying the shrubbery in the back of our new building.

The raccoons were massive uptown and it's wild to see these little guys interacting with our cats in the windows and generally just being good neighbors.

Note: The sweet cat is totally fine; I've seen him often walking about and we're friends since night 1. Night 1: My most territorial cat cursed him out through the open (screened) window one early evening.

It's clear that they're actively competing for a spot by the window with their new neighbors.

Bay Ridge's June 311, by the numbers ..the parking war doesn't take a summer break

So I pulled every 311 call in Bay Ridge (11209) for June—2,607 of them—and we ran exactly on brand.

The parking war is eternal. Illegal parking made up 32% of all our June calls. That’s 845 reports, or about 28 a day—which is almost double the citywide rate. If you add in blocked driveways and other vehicle drama, 42% of every single June complaint was about cars (compared to just 27% citywide).

And here's the tell: parking's share in June is basically identical to its share across the whole year. The curb war literally has no off-season.

What summer actually changed.

If you strip out the parking constant, June's real shift is just the city waking up outside. Compared to the neighborhood's usual baseline:

Encampment complaints shot up by about 2.8×, and "homeless person assistance" calls jumped 2.2×. It's that warm-weather rise in visible street homelessness, even out here. (And just to be clear, those "assistance" calls are people asking the city to send outreach, not just a nuisance gripe).

Rats doubled. Classic summer rodents.

Overgrown trees and branches went up 2.2× because everything is growing.

Street and vehicle noise bumped up 1.7×—windows are open, engines are idling.

The rest held steady: housing complaints dropped to 9% (obviously no heat season in June), and our noise levels are still well under the citywide rate. We're still green and quiet.

So what?

The parking war isn't just Bay Ridge being petty. It's physics. This is one of the most car-dependent, transit-starved corners of Brooklyn. We have one slow train, so basically everyone drives. That makes the curb the single scarcest resource in the neighborhood, and about 28 times a day someone reports a neighbor over it—every single day, every single season.

It's not that we love to complain. It's that we built a place around cars and never gave them anywhere to go, and 311 is just the sound of that math.

Summer piles the rats, the noise, and the harder stuff on top, but the parking war is the heartbeat that never stops.

Volunteering/Job?

I have emailed a few local places about volunteering with the elderly but so far I have not heard back from them. I’m sort of (?) disabled so i’m not working for the summer. Just for the hell it, do any of your elderly family/friends need someone to hangout with for the summer? I’m 29 yo so I’d love to make a few bucks but I’m in a strange predicament where if you know an elderly person in desperate need a friend I’d love to be that person even without pay.

Hit me up maybe?

Stay cool & hydrate
