Tree trimming

Did anyone else notice the tree trimming guys just didn’t show up? I hear them down the next block today, but am 99% sure they never showed on my block the two days parking was marked off (I was working from home both days). Frustrating because large branches are always falling and Parks will not do anything.

Thoughts on the new development where Staple's is currently located?

In the past 3 months, I have been hearing more about Staples' lease expiring, and the building at 9305 5th Avenue will be demolished and turned into an 11-story apartment building. The building was previously approved for 6 stories, but the developer is seeking approval to extend it to 11 stories. If approved, it will have 292 residential units, with only 88 of them being affordable. It will also feature only 75 underground parking spots.

I was able to watch the livestreamed meeting between the community board and the developers. The community board members all brought up very good points against the approval of the building, such as the fact that 5th Ave regularly backs up with traffic, and the site has Engine 242 and a school down the block, and there is also a bus line going up and down the Ave as well. They also want to remove parking spots on the streets to create a delivery loading area for trucks, as they want to have a grocery store on the 1st level. When one of the CB10 members brought up that this would just remove parking spots and increase street congestion, the developer quickly backtracked and said, "Fine, it could be a dry goods retailer", which basically means anything that doesn't sell food. The CB10 member reminded him that whether the retail sells food or dry goods, the loading dock would only increase congestion on the street. And on 4th Ave, many car dealerships have cars parked in parking spots as well. not a crazy amount, but it's still a considerable one. During the meeting, one of the developers admitted they hadn't even conducted any traffic studies, which makes me feel they don't really care about the outcome.

Another complaint was that the developers had no plan to combat flooding when asked about it, as many homes and businesses have been flooded during torrential downpours. Other CB10 members also complained that the building wouldn't fit the character of the neighborhood, considering how big it would be once completed.

I personally am not a fan of this project. The developer, BWH group, was previously approved for 6 stories, so why do they need an additional five? On top of this, another project was already approved at 9201 4th Ave on 92nd Street. It will also be 11 stories, will be mixed-use, and will only have 97 units. I actually like this project better. I am supportive of building more housing in Bay Ridge, but with the project on 9305 5th Ave, it seems like all the developers care about is making as much profit as possible. During the meeting, they had no answers for some of the questions they were asked. The building is in a very dense area of the neighborhood, as they are very close to schools, Engine 242, and multiple car dealerships. I would be more open to it if it were only six stories, but eleven is just overkill.

I just wanted to share my thoughts and hear others as well. Please don't crash out on me in the comments.

Guess the Store

The store replacing Rite Aid at 4th Ave and Bay Ridge Ave is almost complete. I was able to peek inside and it does not look like a dollar store, it appears to be a grocery store. Anybody know or any guesses as to what it might be? I am hopelessly hoping for a Lidl.

On a much slower roll, the store replacing the Rite Aid on 62nd and 4th with the parking lot is a grocery store. Not sure of the company, hopefully not another Superfresh.

Is Drag Racing Still An Issue?

I love BR and lived there for years. I finally moved when I nearly got hit by a drag racer one night. I would love to move back but wondering if it's still an active scene, and if so, where are they doing it so I can plan to move as far from it as possible?

I know every neighborhood has its issues, but being reminded nightly of nearly getting hit is not something I would like.

Sketchy hotel - advice wanted

Hi, we're staying in a hotel near the 95th metro stop. It's a bit of a weird place to be, when visiting the city, but we love the fact that it's quiet and residential here.

Our hotel is clearly being used by prostitutes to "service" their clients. Walls are already thin, so we hear everything. They talk, laugh, "work" up until 3 AM in the morning. Shouting, banging, talking, asking nicely have no use. They laugh in your face. I tried calling the hotel management, they just call her and she denies anything. We could clearly hear her say that "the next guy was leaving in 30 minutes". So I'm sure the hotel knows about this.

What do I do here? I'm not up to date with the social code on how you would handle this. Do I call the police? Do I fart through the keyhole?

Pre K?

We have a son entering pre-k next year, and struck out on our picks from 1-4. He got into our 5th choice, Adelphi, which we’re now hearing may not be so great. Thoughts? Does anybody know the likelihood of getting in via the waitlist? Thanks for the help!

Pharmacy recs?

After Rite Aid closed down, I switched to Neugard pharmacy, which I really liked, at first, because the customer service was really good. However, over the past few months, it has gone totally downhill. It almost never has my medication and they have to order it. And it is sometimes closed for no apparent reason and no warning. There have also been times where no one answers the phone because they don’t have enough people there and it’s too busy. It’s super frustrating. Can anyone recommend another pharmacy in the same area? Near the Bay Ridge Ave stop.

When it’s alternate side parking, please move your car to the other side if you’re going to stay in it, we want the sanitation trucks to actually clean the roads.

It’s Bay Ridge, most people here have a car. And I understand that some people forget their cars in the morning. But for those who decide to stay in their car so as to not get a ticket, please just move to the other side. There is lots of trash on the street, especially from students going to school. Sanitation trucks can’t clean the roads properly if people are in the way. Thank you!

Frankies on Bay Ridge. Great pizza, but who's running the show there?

Correction: Frankies OF Bay Ridge: Great pizza, but the "staff" is awful. The owner's mother is waiting tables, and has no business interacting with customers. I'm sure she's a nice person - but man, she's straight outta Staten Island, super loud, raspy voice and has no idea how to waitress. The main pizza dude sits in the back buried in his phone, never acknowledges customers. TV is on. We were semi-regulars, and noticed there has been a big fall out of diners there. Recently took friends from Manhattan who were craving "Brooklyn pizza" and TBH we were embarrassed to have taken then there. It was a Sat night, and there were us and another table. It's a shame, the pizza is good - but with the cost of things if we're spending hard earned money, it's some place that we can walk away feeling good.
