Long gun recommendations for new LTC owner?

Just got my LTC this week and while I'm happy the feds have allowed me to own firearms, current laws make my choices seem extremely desolate and limited. Assault weapon definitions mean that I practically cant get a modern rifle unless they're neutered abominations like the sig regulator.

In an ideal world I would have just remade New Vegas' Service Rifle, but i feel like it's just on the cusp of the assault weapons definition having a pistol grip and detachable mag, not to mention that needing a pre 2024 AR-15 lower automatically bloats it to a ridiculous price.

Any recommendations on other fun rifles/shotguns I can get my hands on that are MA compliant?

Voluntary surrender of LTC and MIRCS portal status

Someone I know has voluntarily surrendered their ltc. They dropped it off at the lowell pd about two and a half weeks ago but the MIRCS portal still shows it as "active." Does the status ever change to inactive, surrendered or expired or will it continue to show active till the expiry date which is in 2030.. if the status does change, how long does it take to change? Please let me know, thanks!

Happy Birthday America!! I got us a birthday present 😜😎

Finally got my Model 1854 yesterday!! Shoutout to Stateline Guns Ammo & Archery in Plaistow for hooking up a MA resident without fussin’ about it.

Paid more than I hoped but apparently these are selling like hotcakes so deals are tough to find. No tax or MA premium though and I got it under MSRP so I am a happy camper!

Gave me a $1,300 cash price and cash discount on a bunch of ammo as well!! Great shop staffed by great people! (And an awesome german shepherd doggo)

I also ordered the PiewView M-LOK handguard rail from Ranger Point Precision! I love the traditional walnut stock but I think it will be sweet with this handguard, almost like the soviet PPSH sub machine gun aesthetic. Might get an eotech G33 magnifier too since eotech has a 25% off sale today 👀

Am I good to put a muzzle break on this beauty?? LMK!

Time to go shoot it! HAPPY 4TH FAM ❤️🔫😎🎆🇺🇸

50+ yard ranges open to public?

Hey friends, are there any public ranges with 50+ yard lanes/pits within a couple hours drive from southeastern MA? I have a couple optics I'd like to zero and some ammo I'd like to test further than 25 yards that's the only option I have in my immediate vicinity. Thanks in advance!

If this “assault weapons” ban case in the Supreme Court goes our way, is it going to help us in Massachusetts?

The only reason I say it likely won’t, is that the question at the Supreme Court is can this common platform ar-15 and other similar rifles be banned? My belief is how states like Massachusetts will respond if this goes in our favor, which it likely will. Is this, they’ll say even though we can’t ban AR-15s outright, we can however “regulate” features that make them exceptionally more dangerous and lethal, and therefore fall out of constitutional protection. Many other blue states will likely do the same. They will all just label common features on an AR-15 as “ extremely dangerous”, that they can regulate. This will set up another court battle, and ultimately mean we behind the blue wall, get nothing. This is almost certainly what will happen, in my opinion.

Out of state LTC course

I live in Wisconsin, but would like to travel to Massachusetts in the future. No specific time frame, I know getting a MA permit is likely a years-long endeavor.

As I'd like to retain the ability to defend myself when I do eventually travel to MA, I'm interested in obtaining a MA LTC if possible.

I have a few questions if anyone would be kind enough to answer them:

  1. Do I need a separate FID and LTC, or does the LTC count as an FID?

  2. I've been reading up on the requirements to obtain a non-resident MA LTC, and I noticed the training requirements were updated April 2nd of this year. (2026) Does anyone know if there are any approved courses offered outside the state? Flying to MA just to take an approved course would suck, but it's not off the table if that's my only option.

  3. Is there anything else I should know that isn't obvious to an outsider?

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to answer.

Is it worth waiting to see what happens with the AR ban?

Hey guys I’ve been debating on spending a bunch of money to get a pre ban set up or should I just suck it up and wait? I’ve had my LTC for a couple years and got it a couple months after the ban took place so should I just wait and see a little longer and hopefully prices aren’t crazy and normal or just send it and get one now?

18 Birdies of Clay Shooting - Free 30 Day Code!

Fellow clay shooters, club officers, and coaches - Ive posted here before, but wanted to announce our official release!!

I'm a software engineer by trade, and I've watched this sport do two things at once: quietly explode with young shooters (SCTP, high school trap leagues, 4-H) - and still run on paper scorecards and dry-erase boards. There are a hundred apps that'll give you a scorecard. That's not what I built. I built Smoke 'Em to be a home for the whole sport - the club, the community, and the kids coming up behind us.
Here's what I mean, and why I think it's different:

🏟 For the club Stand up your club in a couple minutes, invite your members, and appoint trusted Pro members as scorers so multiple people can run multiple fields at the same shoot. Score the whole squad live on the line, then push each shooter their card to confirm - no more deciphering a clipboard at the end of the day. Walk-ins and first-timers? Score them as guests, no account needed. Pre-build your 5-stand and sporting layouts once and they're ready every time. Every club also gets a public page with its stats, courses and area - a real front door for the range.

For the community Shooting is the most social sport there is, but the tech never caught up. Add your buddies, tag the squad you shot with, follow their rounds in a feed, and settle it on club leaderboards (all-time or this season). Everyone gets a shareable profile with their averages and trophy case. It turns "how'd you do?" into something you can actually see.

For the next generation (this is the part I care about most) If you run or coach a youth program, this is where I really want your help shaping it. Coaches can score an entire squad of juniors live, track each kid's average and progress across a whole season, and use leaderboards, streaks and trophies to keep them hooked - because nothing keeps a 14-year-old coming back like watching their number climb and chasing that first 25 straight with their name on it. New junior without a phone or account? Score them as a guest and hand them a profile later. I want Smoke 'Em to be the tool that makes running a youth squad easier and keeps kids in the sport.

The basics: tracking your own rounds - trap (singles/doubles/handicap), skeet, sporting clays, 5-stand - is free forever, no credit card. Pro ($4.99/mo) unlocks the social, club and live-scoring side.
For the forum: the first 10 people get 30 days of Pro free. Code ShotgunForum30:

  1. Sign up free at https://smokeem.app
  2. Upgrade to Pro on the web. Navigate to your profile, upgrade to Pro Monthly and enter the code below in checkout.
  3. Tap "Add promotion code" → enter ShotgunForum30→ first month's on me

I'm building this in my spare time as a shooter, not a corporation, so I genuinely want your take - especially from club officers and youth coaches. What would make this a no-brainer for your program? Reply here or reach me at contact@smokeem.app.

See you on the line. Let's grow this thing - and the next generation with it.

MA legality of converting a 17-round mag to 10 rounds with a Magblock?

Does anyone here have experience with Massachusetts magazine-capacity laws?

I’m trying to understand whether a 17-round magazine can legally be converted to 10 rounds using a Magblock and then permanently sealed with epoxy or sealant. My understanding is that MA cares about whether the magazine can be “readily converted” back over 10 rounds, so I’m wondering what actually counts as permanent enough.

Has anyone done this in MA, had an FFL/gunsmith do it, or gotten a clear answer on whether epoxy/sealant is acceptable? Not looking for legal advice, just real-world experience or pointers to the relevant MA law/guidance.
