Desert hike to the Green Sand Beach (2022-2023)

This set of photos was taken on the hike to the Green Sand Beach near South Point, from 2 different trips there. The first 6 photos were from early 2022 and the last 4 were from late 2023. During this hike, on both occasions, I saw a perspective of the big island that is dramatically different from how I would have imagined the islands growing up on the mainland. Once again, this island showed that it has no end in its diversity. As I trekked through the snaky labyrinth of sandy back-trails, a colorful and sweeping landscape of prairies, pasturing cows, desert sand, and colorful bays along the coastline decorated in green grass, black lava rock, and sand all contrasting to paint one of the most unique scenes I encountered during my time there. While many people opt to pay for a ride to the beach, I highly recommend this hike to somebody who wants a true desert adventure with a lot of variety and great payoff in the form of one of the most unique beaches on the planet, which literally has sand made of olivine/peridot.

Roaches

Looking for advice on the best approach to dealing with the big buggers. Ater the last rainstorms in march , they have increasingly become a menace. The obvious (cleanliness, etc) are taken care of; but they seem to have moved into the entire area in force at a higher level than before. I have tried to avoid the more noxious poisons, and have the little traps out. But they dont seem to deter the big buggers. Any advice on the best approach to take out the huge flying suckers, even if as just a maintance issue?

Waiting for Fioptics

I’m very frustrated with Spectrum. We pay $85/month for their 1 Gig (internet only) plan but barely get 200-300 Mbps.

I called Spectrum and they sent a technician to come to our house. After spending about an hour checking the box and lines (apparently ours is a hybrid line: coax & fiber), the tech couldn’t find anything wrong and suggested that I asked Spectrum for the newest WiFi 7 modem and router. I went to the store at Parker Center only to be told that I needed to call their customer service representative. After some back and forth on the chat line, Spectrum finally agreed to send me the new equipment.

I know some people in my neighborhood (Kohala Ranch) have Starlink. They say it great especially during power outages. But I prefer not to give my business to Starlink.

If you’re a Kohala Ranch homeowner, do you know when Fioptics will be available at Meadows 2?

Mahalo nui.

PS: I have a mesh system connected to the router, does it hamper WiFi speed?

Leeward Dentist Recommendations?

I live on the leeward side of the island and was looking for a dentist. My job uses BlueCrossBlueShield insurance, so a provider that accepts this insurance would be preferred. If you've had a good experience with a dentist, I'd love to hear. I'm not opposed going to Hilo for a dentist either, but it's much easier to get to Waimea or Kona during business hours without needing to take time off work.

Is Waterworks in Hilo closed?

I just drove by and the sign is gone and the store is empty. Anybody know what happened? where else can I go for filters and UV bulbs? And where else can you buy metal catchment tanks, liners, and covers?

Music Lessons

Late 20’s and I have been interested in relearning piano again or even another instrument. Does anyone have recommendations on teachers or places here that give lessons? I don’t have much room in my own place to setup a keyboard and rather learn in person with a teacher if possible. Thanks!

We had a beautiful morning rain. Then we had a beautiful sunny day and then we had crazy storm clouds and then we got a flash flood warning for tonight and tomorrow…lol…It’s changes fast!
