Alternative/ leftist quarters and bars in Bilbao

Gonna visit the city in the next days and we're really interested in the political subculture in Bilbao. What are recommendations for places that reflect the political past and present of the city?

Felt confused about how people in Bilbao view Hijab

Dear redditors, I have been in Bilbao for 4 months by now and for the first time I experienced slightly 'racist' comment from an elderly man. He was next to me in the bus and we were talking in Spanish. Just asking name, and at first all was good. He complimented my spanish level. I asked whether he is basque and whether he knows basque language. He told me no. I shared with him my wish to learn basque language so that I can become a professor in University someday (Upna needs learning basque language too). He told me But I can't work in University this way with hijab 🥲 I was shocked. He repeated that comment thinking I didn't get it. But I told him it's oki. Luckily my bus stop has reached and I told him nice to meet you and bye. And got into my stop. He also get outside in my stop 😅 and I told him bye again and He was surprised that I am going to gym😂 oki. That was funny. Does people still think woman with hijab cannot work in University? Or is it just old people. Till today I thought spain is safe and secure for hijabi woman too. But today's experience made me confused about how society view woman with hijab. Just wanted to ask you guys to know about it.

edit: the word racism is not apt here . As suggested by one of comments, it can be 'opinionated comment'. anyways it hurted me because till then I have felt safe in spain being a hijabi woman. I came here for my PhD and I wanted to know whether I have to face these kind of 'opinionated comment' more often or not from people in Bilbao. As a sensitive person, I have to be really cautious and prepare my mind to face it, if it's often. otherwise, good. I can adapt. To all the users who commented, Thankyou. I know it's not actual data about people in Bilbao i can gather from these comments. but I got a little experience of how it can be when I get into public places. There are good and bad people in every country. I hope these kind of 'opinionated comment' happen very rarely and when it happens I hope I can adapt to it. Thankyou all. One small note to all commentors: be empathetic. Muchas gracias 🫂

Egun on! Looking for beta testers for a freely available Basque app

What the title says :) here is the beta: https://euskera2026.github.io/Goazen/

Give it a go and let me know your thoughts by DM! Building it with Claude, plan to keep tacking on levels as my useage allows.

I am building it for my own learning, but I think it could help others. With that in mind, because I speak Spanish (as a second language), I have asked the app to build in cognates with Spanish where helpful as a memory aid - not because I think the languages are similar or anything (please don't come for me!)

Parking while away

Hello Redditors in Bilbao, can anybody recommend me a (safe) place to park my small & very beloved oldtimer van when I take a plane home for a week? Or perhaps even a private farm or house? I can bring back some cheese and other Dutch goodness for the favour.

Options for 1 month stay in August?

Visiting Bilbao as a base for doing some bike races in the Basque region, been looking on Airbnb and the only options are like €5,000+ for a month stay.

I’m coming with one teammate so looking for a 2bed, budget is up to €1,000 for each. Prefer an apartment over hotel so we can do cooking, etc.

I’ve been looking on idealista, but if people do respond there they say I need some sort of proof for my stay, like a work contract or something of the sort. Any chance of being able to find something that doesn’t require that proof of work? Or is that required for all short term rentals.

I have EU citizenship if that helps anything.

Thanks!

Athletic Club - Sevilla tickets

Hi everyone!

The La Liga calendar for the 26/27 season just got released, and luckily Athletic Club will play at home against Sevilla on matchweek 2, right when my two friends and I will be visiting Bilbao.

As football enthusiasts from Finland, experiencing a matchday at San Mamés is a massive dream for us. How difficult will it be to secure 3 tickets for this specific match?

A few questions regarding the tickets:

Is it highly recommended that we purchase the Club Athletic membership to get access to the pre-sale, or do tickets for a Sevilla match usually make it to the general sale?

Since we are a group of three, how hard is it to find 3 seats together? Should we aim for separate single tickets close to each other instead?

I know the exact kick-off times aren't confirmed yet, but we want to plan this early. Any advice on the buying process would be massively appreciated.

Muchas gracias!

Professional Jamon carving stands

¡Hola!

I'm in Bilbao for a short holiday, and would like to purchase a good quality professional level jamon leg stand for carving, preferably one with a tilt function like you see in most Jamon shops, for my tapas restaurant at home.

Where would I find one of these in Bilbao? Are there shops specialising in catering equipment?

Eritreans/East Africans in Bilbao

Hey everyone! I’m moving to Bilbao this August to study, and I was wondering if there are any Eritreans or East Africans living there. I’d love to connect, make some new friends, and get to know the community before I arrive. Feel free to comment or message me! ❤️

¿Os parece difícil comprar directamente a productores locales?

* Compren o intenten comprar producto local.
