Nearby trips with good indoor attractions?

I have nothing to do this Memorial Day weekend, so I was considering taking a trip to the beach or the mountains.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be rainy all weekend, so those aren’t viable options.

Is there a trip worth doing driving distance from Birmingham that has good indoor attractions for this rainy Memorial Day weekend?

Children's of Alabama Employees - Fired or Forced to Resign After Requesting an Accommodation?

Current or former healthcare employees at Children's of Alabama: has anyone experienced difficulties after requesting workplace accommodations, reduced schedules, medical leave, or disability-related support?

Examples might include:

  • Delays or problems with accommodation approvals
  • Inconsistent information about leave/disability benefits
  • Retaliation after requesting accommodations
  • Pressure to resign or take leave
  • Termination shortly after accommodation requests

I’m trying to understand whether others have experienced similar issues within hospital systems. Private/anonymous messages are welcome.

Please do not share patient information or confidential medical details publicly.

Help for autistic friend who is homeless

Hello! I have a friend in Homewood who is autistic, disabled and living in a motel (very precariously) after escaping a DV situation and needs clothing and other resources. They are taking care of their mother and cat. I’m sure they could use things like pet food/supplies, office clothing to interview for other jobs, basic home goods etc. Do you know of easy ways for them to get resources since they don't have a car? They also need help with employment so I've tried to connect them to local employment services/charities etc but that is a lot of work on their part to even get in touch with anyone since they have been unable to pay their mobile phone bill. They have a job but hours have been cut and they've been discriminated against repeatedly.

Any support or connections you can offer are appreciated. I live far away and can't help them directly.

Thank you so much for reading!!!!

UPDATE:

Thank you so much for all the great resources. I've compiled everything I have found (100+ resources) into a spreadsheet here in case it can help anyone else. Please note I have not included resources for senior citizens which can be found here.

Calling are Bham girlies

Gauging interest for an idea, and I’d love any input. 🪩🕺🏻💃

I’ve been looking for a workout class that gets me excited, and honestly? There’s nothing that seems up my alley, not so intimidating, actually fun.

So I had an idea. I was a dancer for 13 years, and I’m seeking that feeling as an adult, but I don’t want to learn complicated combos or commit to recitals. And Zumba (sorry girl love you) is just not my cup of tea. I’d LOVE to host a dance fitness class maybe starting once a week. Focused on upbeat “loop” follow along and jump in type choreography (if anyone is familiar with The Fitness Marshall think very much that).

Is this something anyone else would be interested in? What days/times would generally work well with people’s schedules? What type of music would you want to hear? How much would you be willing to pay for something like this? Tbh I don’t really want to make money, but I’ll need to recoup cost for studio rental.

Pic of mock playlist for attention 😍

How to: UAB Health Medical Rec Request

I work in the records side of things and this has been hanging on my mind for a while. I figure I'd explain way too in depth how to fill out UAB's medical records request form. It's got a lot of ridiculous nuance that not everyone is gonna pick up on. This might help you out, or this might help you help your old folks' to get their records. If you can, pull up the PDF from UAB's website as I'll go straight down the page.

First of all, when you fill this form out it only applies to UAB hospitals/clinics in Birmingham. That's the hospital itself and Highlands. If you need something from UAB West or St. Vincent's use their version of the medical records request form. If you send the form to the wrong place you're delaying yourself.

Fill out all the patient information including cities and zip codes. No abbreviations. We're using AI to input info now and it's annoying to correct its mistakes (wish we didn't use AI but not my decision). Make sure to check the check box for yourself or "the party indicated below." Not doing that can make it unclear where to send your records. Make sure to check yes or no on including psych/substance use records. If you check nothing you will not receive psych records even if that's all you have. Psych records need special approval to be released to the patient so yknow special precautions.

The 5 freaking packages. This is where the nuance kicks in. Package 1 is the bare minimum of information. Package 2 is all that plus medications being listed in your request. Package 3 is essentially an abstract of your records- clinical information, meds, and diagnostic info (tests, lab tests, radiology reports). If you want comprehensive info but not too many pages I recommend a package 3.

Package 4 is just diagnostic info. This is NOT the next step up. It has no clinic notes, it's just reports and whatnot. Honestly it should be package 3 but I didn't make the form. Package 5 is the most information possible- it has nursing documentation and internal portal messages among other things package 3 might skim over. If you really want a lot of paper to flip through, or see something missing in whatever you previously requested, you can go with this one.

The selections under the packages are for when you want really specific records and are self explanatory. Emergency Department Documentation = ER records. Outpatient Clinic Notes = just clinic notes, essentially a package 1. Fetal Monitoring Strips apply only to mothers and not the children being born- also you can only get these if you gave birth at UAB. If you check off billing or radiology images the request will be copied and sent off to those separate departments.

2nd Page- It's important you check off how you want to receive records. If you check nothing and your address is legible it'll be mailed. Onsite pick up is done I believe still at Highlands on the first floor. Include a fax number only if your records are being released to a doctor, attorney, or insurance. We can't fax a patient their records so choose something else. A CD means a literal disk will be mailed to you- make sure you have a disc reader. Also really this is for radiology images not sure why it's here as a delivery option. And if you choose email, make sure to write out the email super clear. I think you'll be emailed a link to digitally open up and read your records as a PDF.

Signatures- make sure to sign with a pen or use MS Paint to show you tried. We can't verify digital signatures, and if the request shows up with no signature it can't be accepted. You don't need a representative/witness to sign with you that's for ppl who are deceased, have a guardian, or otherwise have a POA.

Also if you are requesting records for a deceased person, or you have a POA and are requesting that person's records, include a copy of the death certificate or copy of the POA. We can't take your word for it we need that extra paperwork. Also read the POA to make sure it includes you can make healthcare decisions, you'd be surprised that a normal POA can't do squat. If you need ideas on other paperwork to include you can always call and double check.

And finally delivering the completed form. You can do mail, fax or turn it over in-person. Dunno if they've figured out online submissions yet, but they might. In any case, double check your work because there's nothing more annoying than getting a delay on a request.

Yet Another Therapist Recommendation Request

I've been seeing a psychiatrist and therapist for several years, but I am just not seeing the results I am looking for. I have anxiety and depression. My current psychiatrist has not really tested me for anything at all. I just described my symptoms and they put me on meds. Eventually I would like to come off the meds if possible, as they dampen both the good and bad times. In therapy sometimes I feel as if I am the one providing the therapy.

In addition to the general symptoms of depression and anxiety, I more specifically deal with health anxiety, religious trauma, professional burnout, parental estrangement, mood swings, overeating, and biting hands.

I would prefer someone who is located in the Hoover/Pelham area.

BHM Airport Plane Watching / Photography

Has anyone spent time at the airport watching planes or doing aviation photography? Where is the best spot to get an unobstructed view of the planes taking off and landing? I recently picked up a new lens for my camera and would like to test it out!

Some good news from election day: Givan is gone!

A political newcomer with a strong backing from Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has defeated a longtime incumbent for a seat in the State Legislature.

Alicia Escott Lumpkin won her race for State House District 60 Tuesday night, unseating Juandalynn Givan who has served in the seat for 16 years.

Lumpkin finished with 3,882 or 52.79% to Givan’s 2,438 or 33.15 percent. Nina Taylor came in at third place with 1,034 votes or 14%, according to unofficial results late Tuesday.

“Tonight, the people of District 60 made their voices heard, and I am incredibly honored and grateful to have earned your support,” Lumpkin wrote on her campaign’s Facebook page late Tuesday night. “This campaign has never been about politics as usual. It has been about listening to our neighborhoods, fighting for working families, believing in the future of our communities, and making sure District 60 has leadership that shows up and gets things done.”

Rep. Juandalynn Givan, D-Birmingham speaks in opposition to HB1 during a public hearing on the bill at the State House in Montgomery, Ala. With Supreme Court approval, the bill would allow the state to use an alternative congressional map and call a special election, Tuesday, May 5, 2026. (Will McLelland | AL.com) Will McLelland

The race was heavily watched as Woodfin supported a city employee who was challenging a vocal critic and former challenger for mayor. Woodfin endorsed Lumpkin and showed his support Tuesday morning by sporting her campaign t-shirt and sign near a polling place.

In the run up to the election a PAC founded by a close political ally of Woodfin funded a cutting radio campaign ad attacking Givan’s re-election.

In her run for mayor, Givan came in a distant third place to Woodfin last summer, after a campaign characterized by biting rhetoric between Woodfin and Givan and their supporters. Woodfin then endorsed Lumpkin, who at the time was a city employee on his staff, to replace Givan at the State House.

Lumpkin was Birmingham’s director of process improvement but resigned her position to become eligible to seek elected office.

Lumpkin, in her social media post, expressed excitement and a commitment to serve her new constituents.

“Tonight we celebrate,” she wrote. “Tomorrow we get to work.”
