Should Kids Get an Allowance for Doing Chores? Or Should Chores Just Be Expected?
Ok moms on a budget, I want to hear your honest opinions on this one because I know this topic can get heated and you all will get it. 😂
Should kids actually get an allowance for doing chores?
Growing up, I was taught that you help around the house because you’re part of the family. Making your bed, doing the dishes, taking out the trash, cleaning your room, etc. weren’t things you got paid for.
But I also understand the argument for paying kids for chores. An allowance can teach children about budgeting, saving money, earning money, and understanding that work has value. Plus, it gives kids their own spending money without parents constantly being asked to buy little things.
Here's where I'm torn:
If you pay for every chore, are you teaching kids that they should only help when there's money involved?
Or is an allowance actually one of the best money lessons for kids, especially when you're trying to raise financially responsible children?
And from a budgeting perspective, I can see both sides. Giving a child $5–$10 a week adds up over time, but it might also prevent the constant “Mom, can I have this?” every time you're at the store. 😅
So I'm curious:
Do your kids get an allowance?
And bonus question: How much allowance do you think is reasonable by age?
I'd love to hear what actually works for your family—and whether you think paying kids for chores teaches good financial habits or creates a sense of entitlement.
