Theory: The Source of the Addiction

WARNING: Spoilers for S2 - S7 of Buffy and S4 of Angel.

Willow’s original reasons to learn magic were purely to help Buffy - it wasn’t that she wanted to feel powerful or superior, or for personal gain.

Giles was adamant that The Ritual of Restoration was far too dangerous for Willow to perform, as well as well beyond her skill level; he wagered even he could not complete it. He warned her that it could unleash something within her that there would be no turning back from.

In “Becoming”, she began the ritual in English to little effect. Her voice was weak and lacking confidence. But then something took over and she began speaking the original Kalderash version, seemingly something other than herself channeling through her.

I think this was the moment something awakened within Willow that led to her addiction. Up until then, only Kalderash women had performed the ritual, but Willow does not carry that ancestry. An outsider using that ritual must come with some type of cost, otherwise it would not be reserved for only a certain population of people.

My theory is the cost of restoring Angel’s soul was the corruption of Willow’s.

The effects weren’t immediate, but gradual, the first big example being in season 4 with her spell for her will to be done. This was the first violation of Willow’s own code for magic to be done for good and not self gain. Her soul is still mostly pure, however, and she is able to reign herself in, but things only snowballed from there in season 5, as Tara expressed her fear of Willow’s rise in proficiency.

I think what ultimately sealed her fate, or at least accelerated it, was the restoration of Buffy. Willow restored not only the soul, but her entire being—physical and mental, too. I imagine the small dark spot on her soul expanding. The manifestation of the evil demon/entity in episode 3 wasn’t the only price of the spell.

Her addiction and selfishness ramps up rather quickly; she is impressed and cocky with herself, which is out of character. Her spat with Giles only furthered this. Then Amy came in the picture, and Willow was primed for addiction. By Tabula Rosa she is a complete addict, only snapping out of it after hurting Dawn and driving Tara away. But the stain on her soul is too much, and Tara’s death sends her over the edge.

After her relapse, Giles brings Willow to the Coven in England who reconnect her to earth magic, and that I believe helped begin her soul’s healing process. She taps into this to also heal physically after being attacked by Gnarl.

** Angel Spoiler **

I think proof of her healing is when she goes to LA and performs the Ritual of Restoration a second time.

This time around, she doesn’t need to channel anything - Willow is the power source. Her journey through the corruption and healing of her soul made Willow worthy of performing the Ritual without side effect, just as the Kalderash women were seemingly able to do.

Anyway, can you tell I had some THC today? I’d love to hear thoughts on this - agreeing or disagreeing!

In almost 30 years of watching this show, how did I never notice this?

I’ve been watching Buffy since it premiered when I was in high school . Currently doing my first rewatch in several years and I noticed something in the episode Nightmares that I’d never noticed before. when Xander is following the trail of candy bars into the basement right before the clown attacks him, there are Swastikas painted on the wall behind him. Since the show was filmed in an actual high school, I’m assuming it was just graffiti some student painted and not something the set designers did. Can’t believe I never noticed it before as often as I’ve watched this show over the years.

Connection between Supergirl and Giles

In Supergirl's final fight scene... >!she talks Ruthye out of killing Krem, then kills him herself out of revenge and to protect Ruthye's innocence. It reminds me of when Giles killed Glory/Ben to help protect Buffy's good heart.!<

Anyone else think of that, too?

Did Dracula do something?

So in season 5 Episode 1, when Buffy drinks some of Dracula's blood there is a whole effect and montage, and she suddenly isn't under Dracula's thrall anymore.

So something happened. But is it ever explained?

Least favourite episode?

I feel like a bad fan for the fact that mine is the Zeppo. Currently doing a rewatch and actually skipped it.

I'm not a huge fan of Xander but certainly not a hater, and I do love the idea that this episode was the idea for SHEILD. But still just find the episode at best 'blah' at worst annoying!

Would love to hear other people's opinions? With no hate about any!!

Favourite acting moments in Season 1?

Spoilers for Season 1.

I'm doing a first re-watch after a decade and just finished Season 1. My faves are below - what are yours?

Buffy = I'm 16 years old

Every time she does that emotional rollercoaster from laughing, to anger, to apathy, through to almost begging... 💔

Giles = "hmm?"

From the same episode. His dishevelled desperation. His seeming to listen, followed by the natural sounding "hmm" is genius.

Willow = The Pack when she gets hit with the ball, and the follow-up convo with Buffy/"pasty face" convo

Cordy = "that is so cu--" love the moment as it's another bit of growth towards the Scoobie gang, and she gets annoyed right after in a believable yet funny way (or the singing in Puppet Show)

Xander (but also, Buffy & Willow) = Oedipus

BRILLIANT. All I can say, and ever shall say about this is that each of them is 100% believable as a high schooler in this scene

Any others for different characters?

How did 'Nightmares' change character trajectory?

EDIT: spoiler for S1E10

I'm doing my first re-watch after about a decade. Used to watch annually but life got in the way.

This time, I was thinking about how (if it was real), each of them would have been impacted or changed by Nightmares.

For example, Giles' "fathers love for the girl" probably strengthened or put down firm roots from seeing her grave and having that moment of voicing what he should have done. By Prophesy Girl, it's very obvious how he feels.

Did Buffy cope better with her increasingly absent father because of the devastating convo in this episode?

Did Xander face his fears/take more risks because of the clown?

Did Willow backtrack a little socially because of having to sing?

Does Buffy feel differently about vampires or understand them more because she was one?

You get the point 😅 Any headcanon related to this which is borne out in the canon character development would be cool!

Xander Harris ≠ Nicholas Brendon

I see a lot of people here hating the character just because they didn't like the actor (RIP).

Xander was a good character and especially a good person. Yeah, maybe he was the typical basic straight dude, but still he was a good person and he took care of Buffy, Willow, Dawn etc in a way no other character in the series did.

Please stop trashtalking about the character just because you didn't like the actor who portrayed him. He had no powers, fighting skills or anything "special" and still he saved the world. More than once.

Oz Medical Bracelet

I just watched Season 2 Episode 2 “Dead Man’s Party” while discussing what kind of party they are going to be having, Oz waves his hand to correct Giles about the “Hootenanny” and he is clearly wearing a Medic Alert Bracelet. I checked online best as I could but it says that Seth Green doesn’t have any condition requiring it, is there a character trait that Oz needs it? It may seem like one of Oz’s off-brand style but he doesn’t seem the type to take that kind of thing lightly.

I just realized a ben and glory plot hole(an actual one) am I crazy?

Okay, so Im due for a rewatch, I just saw the clip of spikes iconic line "is everyone here very stoned" when he find out Ben if glory and the gang all forgets immediately.

He then says something along the lines of "oh how smart, she makes everyone forget, since I'm not human I can remember"

BUT a big chunk of the Scooby gang are not human and still forget?

Dawn isn't human but she forgets(I think I could be wrong about this one)

Buffy is a slayer, she's not technically human. Willow and Tara are witches, not humans. And yet they all forget? I'm not mentioning anya because I don't remember if she was human or a demon at this point in the show.

Maybe I'm just remembering wrong, but has anyone else noticed that? I'm about 60% sure everyone saw her "change" from Ben to glory before. Idk

Thank you in advance for any and all responses ❤️

Xander = Chandler?

First time in this group as I am only on season 2, so I’m not sure if this has been brought up. But does anyone else feel that Xander is extremely similar to chandler from friends? I feel like from mannerisms to quirkiness to humor, his character constantly reminds me of chandler.

Edit: I am not talking about a direct parallel in characters, moreso how they both present lines and act. I could see teen Chandler being more similar to Xander personality wise, but not Friends chandler

I recently got Angel complete series for $15. Ive heard I need to watch Buffy 1st. Which complete series collection should I go for?

I dont mind DVDs, Blurays with DVDs would be best but not a problem if not possible. I looked up Buffy complete collections and there seem like a lot of different ones so Im asking here to see which one should I go for. Are they that different? Does it matter? Thanks for your help ahead of time.

Rewatching Buffy and I must say....

I really dislike Xander. I feel like the way he treats Buffy when he's mad is just anger from her rejection. Feels sort of like Tighten from Mega Mind. Does anyone else feel this way? His anger feels misdirected sometimes and he refuses to listen to Buffy's side, e.g. when she left.

Unpopular opinion. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce was a great watcher.

He was sharp, intelligent, true to the cause, and knowledgeable. He did value protocol over heart, but isn't that the point? Isn't the watcher meant to be an advisor to the Slayer to direct her attention to the cause of protecting the world from dark forces? Westly was also young and was put in charge of not one, but two rebellious Slayers.

Do I agree with everything he said and did as a watcher? No, of course not, but it took a level of conviction and dedication to stick with it as he did. His heart, and more importantly, his head, were in the right place. And he did grow and appreciate the value of trust over authority in time.

I think he is a seriously underrated character.
