My First Experience with CGC (EU/Munich)
Hey all, since I saw a bunch of questions in this regard, and while it's still fresh (just picked up my package), I wanted to share my experience with CGC (CCG) Europe. Hopefully it can help some people decide on grading with them in the future.
Overall, I must start by saying that I am a rather impatient person and I kept checking the status of my submission daily xD Some points here might not apply to you if you "send and forget".
For reference I submitted 5 cards in the Economy tier, 2 modern japanese ones, 1 modern english one, and 2 vintage english ones, that I've had since my childhood. Anyway, jumping straight into...
The positives:
- the turnaround time was about 20-25 working days - very quick and without delays, what else can you ask for? For the price, this was a huge win for me, speaking of which...
- the price of submission - each card cost 20€ to grade, there were no hidden costs or up-charges, shipping back and forth was also reasonable, another big win,
- customer support - while not always super precise with the answers, the support team was rather quick to answer and very kind and respectful with their messages, always a nice thing to see,
- availability for EU residents - honestly, this was probably my main selling point, being able to ship the cards "next door" was great, no customs, extra charges, packages potentially getting lost on the other side of the globe, etc.
The negatives:
- the website has confusing information displayed - currently the EU website of CGC says that each tier's turnaround times are 45 days, which, even for the Economy tier, is not the case,
- no grading notes or reasoning - the two vintage cards came back with rather low grades, which isn't an issue, since I'm keeping them forever, but I did a pre-grading session, which made me believe they would be at least 8s. Of course, you can't reliably pre-grade at home for 100% certainty, but that's where grader notes would be welcome,
- one card came back with a speck of dirt encapsulated - a tiny bit of dirt is now permanently in the slab, which again, isn't a huge issue, since the card did 10, but it's going to be the tiniest irk in the back of my mind.
As a closing note, the one massive surprise was a Zard X gold card I submitted fully expecting a 9, which came back a 10! Including a picture just to share the joy 😁
Overall, I can truly recommend CGC in Germany to grade your cards if you live in the EU. As mentioned in the intro, I am a rather impatient and stressed person when it comes to things like these, but in retrospect, this went really really well and without any 3rd parties or middlemen involved.
Have a good one!
