We knew Modi’s attack on institutions was bad for Indian economy. Now we have proof

Article link: https://theprint.in/opinion/modi-india-governance-economic-growth-study/3018487/

BJP zombies will probably read this and immediately scream “Soros funded!”, “Western propaganda!”, “Congress conspiracy!” because apparently the only acceptable research is research that says Modi is perfect. But the actual study by Texas Tech researchers Kevin Grier and Robin Grier uses the synthetic control method, creating a “Synthetic India” from comparable emerging economies to estimate how India might have performed without the Modi era.

The study finds that all 10 governance indicators measuring institutional strength declined under Modi, including liberal democracy, judicial constraints, political corruption and freedom of expression. More importantly, India’s per capita income in 2023 was about 10% lower than the study estimates it otherwise would have been, translating to a roughly $2.65 trillion cumulative notional loss over the decade. The article also argues that India’s growth has been slower than during the UPA period, while demonetisation badly hurt growth, private investment and household savings remain weak, and estimates suggest earlier GDP growth was understated while later growth was overstated.

And before the IT cell starts celebrating “fastest growing major economy”, the point is not that India has stopped growing or that GDP rankings mean nothing. The argument is that India could have grown more while maintaining stronger institutions. Basically, the supposed “Strongman Bargain” was meant to be weaker institutions in exchange for better economic performance, but according to this research India may have got both weaker institutions AND slower growth. Even the article admits this is one study, not gospel, and notes methodological criticisms, including some results not reaching statistical significance.

"Astounding Facts" and Observations Highlighted by the Court

The trial judge dissected the testimonies of the complainants and pointed out several striking inconsistencies, factual flaws, and indicators of a broader conspiracy:

  • Factual Impossibilities & Alibis: Certain incidents claimed to have occurred at the WFI office on specific dates were disproven because official records, witness testimony, and digital footprints (such as Facebook posts) established that Singh was physically present in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, conducting selection trials at that exact time. Furthermore, one incident was alleged to have taken place on a Sunday when the WFI office was closed; the complainant subsequently altered the date, which the court flagged.
  • "Highly Unnatural" Public Incidents: The court dismissed allegations of forced hugs and groping in crowded public venues (such as stadiums during international events and the Jakarta Asian Games), noting it was entirely improbable that such acts could happen in plain view of coaches, media, and family members without anyone raising an alarm or intervening.
  • Tutored Testimony and Shared Addresses: The court observed that multiple complainants—despite living in different places—listed the exact same address on their formal complaints, pointing to coordinated planning, "tutoring," and shared coaching influences.
  • Hostile Witnesses and Altered Statements: Out of the primary complainants, two later turned hostile, and their testimonies actively discredited the prosecution's narrative. The court noted that the witnesses repeatedly altered their statements from their earliest accounts.
  • Political Motivation and Conspiracy: The judgment concluded that the case bore indicators of a collective fabrication orchestrated under a "deep conspiracy which seems to be motivated politically" involving specific coaches and complainants.

NEET Paper Leak: 'NTA Has Learnt No Lessons', Says Supreme Court; Calls for Institutional Reform

> The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that the National Testing Agency (NTA) had learnt no lessons from the question paper leaks. The court said the NTA should be institutionalised and measures must be put in place to ensure that question papers do not leak. A robust system should be established to conduct entrance examinations smoothly, the court said.

> A bench comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe stressed the need for technological changes to ensure the security and integrity of examinations.

> The court was hearing a batch of petitions filed in connection with the leak of this year's NEET question paper. It directed the Central government to file an affidavit detailing the progress made and steps taken to implement the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee and the Nandan Nilekani Committee.

> The Radhakrishnan Committee was a high-level panel constituted after a similar question paper leak during the NEET-UG examination in 2024. The committee made several recommendations aimed at establishing a stronger system for conducting entrance examinations. The Nandan Nilekani Committee was constituted by the Centre this year to study and recommend reforms related to the conduct of competitive examinations. The Supreme Court will hear the case again after three weeks.

> Among the petitions before the court is one filed by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), through advocate Tanvi Dubey, seeking the replacement or restructuring of the NTA.

> The petition has sought digital locking of question papers, a shift to the computer-based test (CBT) model and publication of centre-wise results to identify irregularities. The petitioner has also submitted an application containing recommendations on how the transition to CBT could be implemented.

> Another petition filed by United Doctors Front through advocates Ritu Renniwal and Charu Mathur is also before the court. It seeks the establishment of a statutory national testing body with strong leadership and accountability.

> When the NEET question paper leak came to light in 2024, the NTA had maintained that it was not widespread. The Supreme Court accepted this position and said a re-test could not be ordered. The court had then warned the NTA to pay greater attention to the conduct of examinations and directed a seven-member committee constituted by the Central government to examine and address the existing problems.
