Forklift CGI Breakdown | Modeling & Engineering Details

A behind-the-scenes look at the workflow for a forklift presentation video. The project involves modeling the entire machine from scratch, with detailed recreation of all internal engineering components to accurately visualize the hydraulic system and engine. This is an early work-in-progress and not the final version. Created using Cinema 4D and Plasticity.

C4D for Houdini users

Hey all, I’m looking for some advice as most info out there seems to be for C4D -> Houdini and not the other way around.

I’m a former comper-turned-generalist that has been mainly using Houdini at work for the past 2-3 years. I love every thing about Houdini and the workflow, but did the trial C4D recently and decided to give it a go for a year, mainly to just play around in. There’s certainly a gap in Houdini in terms of layout, product animation, and non-procedural modeling that I’d like to fill, so I’m interested in exploring workflows for that, especially with working in combination with Houdini.

I’ve messed around in Blender enough and it’s never felt great to me to use (over-reliance on community tools, a bit too disjointed and seems undercooked in standard workflows for professional live-action VFX), but C4D felt much better immediately. I learned 3D through Houdini, so I’m struggling a bit with adapting to how most DCCs do things like modifiers/deformers/simple sims/etc.

Does anyone have any insight or suggestions for learning material? I’ve found it tricky to find tutorials that teach C4D workflows without being retaught the basics of 3D itself. Note: I’ve used Redshift in Houdini for a few years, so materials & rendering in C4D has felt familiar to me so far.

Also any workflow insight or tooling suggestions for using C4D in combination with Houdini would be very appreciated! Blender has a plugin called Blendini that lets you easily push models/attributes/setups to and from Houdini, as well as true mtlx support, which is essentially what I’m hoping to find. Thanks in advance!

How photorealistic can you get with Redshift ?

Hi guys, quick question. I've been using C4D+RS for many years, and I consider myself very good at it, with loads of studio experience.

However I wonder if it's the render of choice for a true, "oh my god is this a photo" effect. I see a lot of people using Vray or Corona for instance. Do those have something that Redshift doesn't ?

I know you may be tempted to answer "it's all about your eye, composition etc. Render engines are irrelevant" but I'd really like to have a conversation about the actual render tech out there. The nerdy stuff.

What are your thoughts ?

Watch CGI > (Sound on)

Sharing a recent personal project of a watch cgi/animation. Few months back I watched some incredible work by PUCK, specially their watch cgi done for IWC. I was awed with the intent and motion design. Back then, i decided to do a watch animation and here we are.

Few of the shots are inspired by IWC - Ingenieur. It took me around a month or so from storyboard to final production. For the sound, I am not a professional sound artist, I just used some folleys and basic layering for the sound design in Adobe Audition.

For me personal projects are an important part of creative process, they give me space to explore ideas freely and test visual direction.

How do I stop grass from growing in my road?

so obviously you can see the problem here... the grass is sticking up through the road. I have the grass growing using a matrix scatter object using the ground plane, and I would love to be able to somehow add a shader(? maybe) or something that uses the geometry from my road to either tell the matrix object to not add particles there, or at least set their scale to zero. Not sure if either way helps with render times. Since I would like to be able to change the road's path I'm hoping that would still be possible. The road is just a rectangle swept along a path. I tried using a selection tag but it came out blocky along the edges of the road since the ground plane is a grid.

Thanks for any help! I feel I'm getting closer.

Deep Geo - Kinetic Light in the Mountains

Hey all! Just wanted to share my new personal project which is a mini music-video for one of my own songs. I've been working on creating my own EP for the last year and I thought I'd put my motion skills to use in bringing it to life. Created in C4D and AE, using georeferenced public map models from the mountains and fjords in Norway.

And if you're curious to hear the whole EP it's here > https://linktr.ee/nubivore

Thanks for reading/watching :)
