Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

The Jane at College Station

Hello everyone, I’m the brother of a newly beginning Aggie. I posted this in an A&M Facebook family group as well.

My brother just moved into this student apartment complex called The Jane, at Colgate Drive. They did a great job of advertising, but absolutely blundered their move-in. It's like they put all their money into marketing, and none into what matters.

Funnily enough, they have been constantly hooting about their "renovations" being complete by July on their socials (Instagram, Facebook), but nothing was ready in time, and it doesn't seem like they will be any time soon.

The photos are what he moved into… on the 18th.

My brother can't even cook or use the dishwasher right now. Water has some issues too. I called four times until they finally picked up, and they had no idea what was wrong with the room...

By the 18th tenants were basically promised a furnished room with everything ready to go (except things like shower curtains, sheets, etc.) They kept noting that they renovated. Nothing was up to standard by the move-in, and many tenants stood outside for close to an hour in 100+ degree heat to receive their keys as well.

My brother isn’t the only one affected. Several students have been left with a dirty, unprepared and ill-equipped room. Added to that, there are several recent reviews of angry tenants and parents of tenants on Google stating similar things. Some still have no A/C and have not moved in.

The complex was simply not ready to accommodate move-ins at all, yet they continued to send out emails hyping students up for their move-in today.

Has anyone experienced something like this?

I reached out to KBTX to see if they could cover this whole case of unpreparedness and false advertising.

Any other advice on what we should do...?

Local Art!

Howdy! I’m looking for some art for my new apartment, and I’d love to support a local artist! 🎨
I’m looking for something reasonably priced—thinking florals, Texas-themed pieces, or anything that represents College Station. I’d love to see what you have or any recommendations!

Century Tree Transit Update! Android Availability + Bus Approaching Notifications!

Howdy Aggies!

First off, I want to say thank you. When I first posted about the release of my new bus routes app, I was not expecting anything at all. I was very wrong.

You guys absolutely blew me away. Y'all have shown me so much positivity and given me such great feedback. I just checked and we already have around 300 downloads on iOS alone in just a few days. That may not sound like a ton, but I was expecting to see maybe 50 at most. So truly, thank you, this means a lot to me.

Recent Updates & Features

Thanks to your incredible feedback, here is what we have implemented so far:

  • Bus Approaching Notifications: In the Notifications section under the More tab, you can now add alerts for when a bus is about to reach your stop. (Note that right now it is a little buggy and you may receive duplicate notifications, but it is working!)

  • Easier Inbound/Outbound Switching: Previously, you had to scroll back through the selector to switch directions. Now, when you have a route open, a quick-tap icon pops up below the selector to easily switch between inbound and outbound (requested by u/ExtensionAuthor5483). You can also view both directions at the same time (requested by u/notanindianboi).

  • Route Locking: In the Favorites tab, there is now a lock icon next to each route. Locking a route means it will automatically open every time you launch the app (requested by u/notanindianboi).

  • Notifications Tab UI Redesign: I updated the UI to offer a more user-friendly walkthrough approach (let me know if you prefer this or the old one!). Additionally, you can now choose whether or not to receive official transit news for each route. If you already set up alerts, you are automatically opted in, but you can disable it anytime.

  • Android Support (Kinda!): To be a Play Store developer, I need an Android device (which I currently don't have). However, since so many of you asked, I didn't want to leave you empty-handed. Until official support arrives, I will be releasing APKs for each build directly on my website. You'll need to check the site manually for updates, but I'm also happy to make a group chat or DM y'all!

That’s all for now! I don't want to spam the sub with posts about this app, so I may not post much until I have official Android support ready (or if I need testers).

I remember telling my friends just a few weeks ago that I didn't know if working on this would really be worth it or if anyone would download it. Thanks for proving me wrong. Gig 'em!

Looking for Garage Door Repair in College Station

Hey everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for someone who does garage door repair in the College Station area. My garage door is having some issues and I’m looking for someone reliable who can come take a look, diagnose the problem, and give me a fair price for the repair.

Looking to make friends

(27 M)

I’m still fairly new to the area, so I figured it’s probably time I actually make some new friends lol. I’m pretty active and usually down to do something rather than just sit around. I’m into honestly anything that involves a good activity and a couple drinks afterward.

I’m really just looking to meet some cool people and build some genuine, platonic friendships!

Become homeless today in BCS

I was living at the Bryan Twin City Mission shelter, where I had lived since July 29th. I was already set to move out on September 3rd. (I put down the deposit to move into a place closer to the College Station side, which is also by my work).

I was having trouble getting hired anywhere in Austin (my hometown), so I spent my last $60 on a Greyhound ticket out here to start over. Got immediately hired and things had been looking up. I'm still working, but the Twin City Mission kicked me out today, claiming that I disrespected a staff member and called them a name. I literally didn't. The majority of people had my back, and the case managers there have even documented and reported the problems that have been happening there recently. Lots of antagonizing and hatred going on there, including with staff members who are also residents themselves.

What are my options here? I was wanting to further my education and still intend to, so are there loans/grants I could get that could help me cover cost of living in the meantime? I just don't have any family or support system except for a few friends who are also broke and don't have living situations that allow them to take someone in (both in BCS and Austin), and my current job in BCS is the first job I've managed to get in a while. I don't want to leave and just be stuck unemployed somewhere else, but I also cannot and will not camp out in BCS, since that's illegal and can cause me more problems. I can maybe get a motel for one night but that's gonna take all my money and then what? I have to be able to pay first month rent on September 3rd. The roommate I'm moving in with is still planning on moving there with me, but he also lives at the mission and there's nothing he can do to help me until that day. I'm honestly completely devastated. I was just trying to fix my life and I thought I was doing everything right. I don't abuse drugs or alcohol and I didn't really need much help from the mission, other than a place to live and help getting back on my feet. Which they were giving me until today. I kept my head down, did not speak unless spoken to, and I still got thrown out. The staff there are violent and hostile, and tried to chase me down into the street as I was leaving. The man running the front desk screamed at the top of his lungs that he will "hunt me down and find me tonight". This is all on camera at twin city, and I also contacted Bryan PD about it. A detective called me back while I was at work, and I just got off. I called and now no one is available. Not that they can necessarily help much anyway...

Worried about Ubering to Houston

So I have a trip coming up soon, and I'm stuck between the reliability and very expensive price of a Taxi, or doing it through Uber. A taxi service I found on google for the area lists 275 as the price to get to Houston. Both times I've looked on Uber, I can do it for almost 1/3rd of that, at just above 100 bucks. This is a ridiculous price difference, but the Taxi is guaranteed, and there's no guarantee anyone will be up and willing to drive to the airport in Houston from this area.

Has anyone ever done this before? Has trying to book the uber in advance helped?

What exactly is Twin Peaks corporate looking for when approving Twin Peaks Girls?

I interviewed for a Twin Peaks Girl position at the Bryan, TX location and I genuinely thought it went really well. The manager seemed to really like me, had me try on the uniform, and took the pictures to send to corporate for approval.
I also made sure I was completely put together for the interview. I had big bombshell curls, full glam makeup, lashes, everything. I felt like I looked really polished and fit the whole Twin Peaks aesthetic, and the interaction with the manager made me feel pretty confident about it.
They told me corporate still had to approve my pictures, so I waited several days for them to review everything. I finally followed up today and found out that corporate didn’t approve me.
I’m honestly just confused about what they’re looking for. 😭 If the manager liked me enough to move me forward, I looked good in the uniform, and I came in fully styled, what usually makes corporate approve or deny someone?
For anyone who’s worked at Twin Peaks or has gone through the corporate photo approval process, do you know what they actually judge? Is it body type, facial features, makeup/hair, how you photograph in the uniform, or just whether you fit a very specific look?
Especially interested in hearing from anyone who has worked at the Bryan/College Station location or has been through this process recently.

Looking for a trustworthy mechanic

We moved our son into the dorms yesterday, and something happened with the exhaust system in his car. We tried repairing it ourselves, but changing the part the code indicated did not help. Need to tow it to a mechanic, but it’s Sunday and we don’t want to get stuck with an untrustworthy place and be stuck with them. Does anyone have a great experience with a mechanic they would recommend? The car isn’t worth much, but it’s what he’s got. Thanks in advance for your referrals!

New Bus App!

Howdy Ags!

As an AggieSpirit driver, I’ve spent countless hours listening to passengers (and fellow drivers) talk about what frustrates them most about getting around campus. After building this idea over the summer, I’m super excited to share that my new app, Century Tree Transit, is officially available on the App Store! Named after our iconic campus landmark, CTT was built to make navigating B/CS faster, smoother, and a whole lot less stressful.

Why should you try it?

Besides the simple features, like the easy to use live map and trip planner, CTT offers some new features specifically to make your life easier.

  • BTD Support! CTT has an alternate section dedicated towards Brazos Transit District. All of the information about how to ride, the routes, and the schedules can be easily found. (note that at this time, BTD does not provide live tracking that I know of).
  • No More Surprise Detours: When a route gets altered, the app traces the normal route with a dashed line so you can see what’s being skipped, with closed or added stops clearly flagged on the map.
  • Custom Delay Notifications: Tired of missing updates? Get notifications for your favorite routes, and customize your schedule so alerts only hit when you actually ride (no more spam on weekends if you don't want it).
  • New to riding the bus? No problem! There is a help guide written out to make you a pro the first time you step on.
  • Service Calendar: Wondering if the busses are running break service on Monday? Just check the calendar!
  • Offline Caching: The first few days is always chaos on the bus. Route data is cached locally so you can still pull up info when servers take a hit.
  • Drivers: You can now view each unit's letter designation (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.) right on their callout by toggling it in the More tab!

I am also actively working on new features, such as notifications when a bus is approaching your stop!

This is my first app ever! Even if you don't end up sticking with CTT, I would still really appreciate if you could give it a shot and give me feedback!

Check it out on the App Store! Play Store support is coming very soon!

Thanks and gig em!

Activity Partners

I’m a 27-year-old guy and Aggie alum who recently relocated back to College Station during a career pivot. I’m looking to rebuild my social circle, which I’ve found gets increasingly harder the older I get.

This seems particularly true when it comes to befriending other guys. I’m openly gay, but partnered, so I’m not looking for dating or anything romantic.

I’m hoping to meet guys who enjoy getting out, trying new things, and having good conversations. I’d love to find some easygoing friends to join me for things like:

• Fitness: I’m new to prioritizing my health and have recently started getting into the gym.
• Outdoors: Hiking, fishing, and wildlife.
• Creative pursuits: Classic cinema, crocheting, fiction writing, book clubs, and thrifting/antique hunting.
• Low-key: Catching up over coffee or a beer.

If any of that sounds like you, feel free to reach out!

Rideshare 2 Austin (10/17)

Hello. I'm moving to College Station in a few days as an A&M Freshmen and I don't know much about the area. I am planning to go to Austin for a concert on 10/17. If anyone else is going around that time and would be interested in splitting an Uber, please lmk! I looked at buses, but they took a really long route, so that would kind of be a last resort. I'll look into using Hitch a little later, but if anyone also has similar plans, please do reach out. Btw I'm 18M living a few minutes from the main tamu campus if anyone was wondering so yea. If this wasn't the right place for me to post lmk, I'll take it down.
