weird rattle under acceleration in engine

I have a 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 4.6L V8 with about 300,000 km (186k miles).

Sometimes I hear a diesel-like rattling noise when accelerating, mostly under hard acceleration but occasionally with light acceleration too.

The weird part is that the noise doesn't happen when revving the engine while stationary. The car runs strong, no misfires or rough idle.

It also uses about 1 liter of oil every 4,000 km, and I found some oil residue around the sides and underneath the engine, but no obvious puddles.

What could cause this noise? Knock/detonation, timing components, exhaust/heat shield, or something else?

Terrifying at the limit

So I went on a togue with some friends in my heavily modified 04 CVPI and it feels like it wants to bite your head off (though great fun) at the limit. Twitchy and throttle input had to be very carefully metered lest you be wrapped round a tree. Is anyone familiar with ways to make these things less twitchy when you’re pushing them? I have some stiffer custom fabbed rear watts arms and some front poly bushings apart from the obvious go fast stuff. Just the limits of solid axle?

Pantherlights.com no longer active?

Anybody know anything about this? I've always wanted to pull the trigger on it but checked today and the shop is offline. Guess I missed the boat. Any alternative options out there for a retrofit?

OK, let's try this again. I was getting errors previously when trying to post.

No brake lights ?

For whatever reason I have zero brake lights even the third one doesn't work . I went to AutoZone and was told but a guy I had no brake lights and I was confused. Since the last I checked they were all working . Well grabbed a pack of bulbs and the turn signals work but no brake lights what so ever .

What could cause that to happen ? Could it be the connectors or no ? Or what could it possibly be . Sorry guys I'm really tired and exhausted had a long day .

Thank you

Am I missing something on my struts?

So you can kind off see the sticker all jammed up in there, the sticker was on top completely covering or whatever, the 2nd Pic is the other strut. I'll admit, I have no idea what they are supposed to look like from the top. Normal, not normal? I appreciate it and I'm sorry for being dumb.

Supercharge or full swap?

Hey all. Im a Town Car enthusiast but figured here would be a better place to ask for performance related questions.
I’ve got a 1995 town car, on the stock 4.6 engine. It’s not on its last legs per se but I’d like to give it an upgrade.

I’ve thought about a couple options, rebuilding the original engine with forged internals and throwing a supercharger kit on it.

Fully swapping it to a 5.4 triton and throwing performance parts on it, but I haven’t heard great things about those engines so I’m a bit wary of that route.

Or just coyote swapping it. I won’t say money is an ISSUE but I’d like to keep it reasonable, of course I know none of these options are CHEAP but hoping to keep it below the 20k range.

What should I do here? I was leaning towards the first option, getting the stock engine rebuilt and adding a supercharger kit but does that make sense in the long run? Is the money and effort worth the sound/power increase I’d get out of it or is it just a waste of time? I haven’t heard much of people doing that to the stock engine but I’m familiar with the original 4.6 and think it would be a nice “OEM+” touch to keep the same engine in it. Also I like the bullet proof factor of the 4.6. They’ve always been reliable to me. Of course all these options would also include the upgraded drivetrain components or whatever else I’d need.

Any advice or ideas are welcome! Help me decide what I should go for!

PI head swap

For anyone who really wants to wake up their panther, an 01+ PI head swap onto a NPI 98-00 bottom end makes these cars pretty quick and it’s so much fun to drive now. Gives higher compression and better flowing heads. 0-60 in 6.78 seconds and runs the 1/8 in 10.01 at 72.4mph

Fuel gauge increase by itself

Hi guys,

So lately i have been having this problem where my fuel gauge will give false reading of an increased fuel by an extra quarter, eventually after driving it for a bit it will go back to the correct reading. Anyone know what could be the problem?

JVC fits in just fine as a radio

Husband said it's great for $150. Looks hella natural. Just in case if someone's out there looking around. Bluetooth and can do backup camera and can play video via a USB dongle but it's not that great.

Weird noise and shaking, pls help

Car: 2003 Ford Crown Victoria LX, 98k miles

Situation: So yesterday morning around 6am I noticed that my car was running a little bit rough. I checked the codes and had a new code, P1131 (lack of HO2S11 switch, sensor indicates lean). I also checked the oil and it was low (it's been about 2k miles since my last oil change), so I topped it up. This didn't fix the problem though, and the car was still running a little rough.

I have a BlueDriver Model LSB2 code reader, and it showed some of the most common fixes for the lean code being replacing/cleaning the MAF sensor or replacing O2 sensors. So I cleaned the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner and that seemed to fix the problem.

After that, the car ran perfectly fine all day from about 7am until 4pm. I do gig work (mainly Instacart & Walmart Spark), so I was driving all throughout the day, but prob under or around 100 ish miles today.

Then around 4pm, while I was driving, I suddenly heard the sound in the video accompanied by roughness and shaking. I immediately pulled into a parking lot, turned the car off, and tried to diagnose what was wrong but couldn't figure it out. I didn't notice anything obviously wrong after inspecting the engine bay. I checked the oil again and it's still at the correct level, the serpentine belt seems fine, the intake hoses seem fine, and I checked the electrical connectors I could see.

After a while I decided to record the video included to show or post about it later.

The really confusing part is that this didn't result in any new check engine codes. There are still only two current codes:

- P1406 (DPFE sensor downstream hose unplugged or clogged). This has been on for a long time and has never really affected anything noticeably, as far as I can tell.

- P1131 (lack of HO2S11 switch, sensor indicates lean). This is the code that first popped up around 6am that morning when the car was only running slightly rough.

That's the part that's really throwing me for a loop. The P1131 came with the slight roughness that morning, then cleaning the MAF seemed to fix that completely and the car ran buttery smooth for roughly 9 hours. Then around 4pm this much more severe roughness/shaking and the sound in the video suddenly started, but there aren't any new codes.

I would think something like a bad spark plug, ignition coil, or fuel injector could be the issue but idk why Im not getting any codes for that. Maybe if I let my car run longer some new useful code would appear but idk if it's risky to do so.

The car is currently parked in a grocery store/shopping center parking lot about 50 mins from where I live, and I'm trying to figure out whether I can diagnose/fix this myself there or if I need to get it towed. I really prefer to do everything myself unless it's almost impossible to do so, I even replaced the intake manifold a couple years back myself btw

TL;DR: Around 6am car had a new P1131 lean code and slight but consistent roughness. Cleaned the MAF and the car ran buttery smooth for the rest of the day until around 4pm, when it suddenly started making the sound in the video along with severe roughness, even at idle. No new codes afterward. Anyone have an idea what this could be or what I should check next?

How much damage is too much for Intake Manifold gasket surfaces? (2011 Lincoln Town Car)

Coolant leak. Manifold removed.
The chamber on passenger front of heads has a groove on the corner that my fingernail catches.

There is black residue, that is not the groove. The groove is on the bottom right side of the chamber as it is pictured. The black residue area is mostly flat now.
I’m wondering if someone in the past already used a gasket maker compound to treat the grooves?

This is my first intake manifold job so I’ve struggled to get as clean as possible. Wondering at what point I can stop and if this needs further attention, or maybe I send it against general advice I have already read…

Thanks, Y’all.

Anyone else get increasingly frustrated with their panther?

I love my town car and have absolutely adored it since day one but it has been pissing me off to the point where I've almost listed it on marketplace multiple times recently.

I dont know what it is, but every single time I work on my lincoln specifically it's always a fucking hassle. Both of my interior door handles were broken so I went to replace the driver side and cracked the plastic. My lock switches on both front doors dont work. The passenger seat controls don't work. Drivers heated seat doesn't work. The driver seat controls are falling into the door. The driver window is super slow and is definitely about to stop working. I replaced an o2 sensor last month that was probably the most stuck one I've ever seen in my life. I went to replace the spark plugs last month as well and there was so much dirt in ALL OF THE spark plug wells to the point where you couldn't even see the hex on the plug and it turned an hour job into a whole day experiment.

I love this car to death and it is pristinely clean appearance wise but I am running out of patience trying to fix everything. I fix something and something else breaks. All of this is only at 120k miles on a 2010, that I specifically paid good money for because it was in very good shape when I got it. It just seems like it's hitting the point now where everything around the engine is crumbling... they tell you these cars are reliable but they're old and rusty now...

SOS Spark Plug Thrown

Just ejected a spark plug. It went back in and seems firm tho I can't torque it. On a scale 1-10, how horrible would it be to drive it home 80 miles if I taje backroads and keep it slow?just don't want to mess with a tow like that on Sunday night at 8p in podunky ct (affectionately).

2005 Crown Victoria LX is my new favorite

Can’t explain it but I love it
2005 Crown Vic LX about 225,200 miles
Still figuring out what I’m gonna do with it in terms of cosmetics and what have you.
Just getting the hang of driving a boat and seeing what needs to be addressed on it for now. The belt n some bulbs were replaced so far.
Check engine light came on for a bit but then went away with a P0307 code, so my first step is gonna be replacing all the spark plugs and coils.

Who’s making these prices?

I’m 24 years old grew up in p71s My dad bought for pennies.
In 2014 he paid $2000 for a 2010 that had been supercharged by the police department with only 60kmiles
2020 we paid $800 for a 2007 p71 with 115k miles.
My point is what the fuck happened to the prices why are people asking 6k 7k.
Nobody is buying them at that price there left for sale for years. Would you rather have 3k or waste 2 years trying to get 7k to end up selling it for 3k at the end.
I would not spend 2oz of worth of gold value on a beater crown Vic with overheating.
I can’t find me a decent crown Vic for 3k anymore it’s sad. I can’t afford the car I learned to drive the car I grow up in as a kid. I expected prices to go up but this is insane. Somethings only worth what somebody’s willing to pay and nobody is willing to pay 7000 for your pieces of shit so that means it’s not worth that price you think. Buyers we need to hold out together and not give our hard earned money to greedy ignorant people. We pay what there worth $2-4k or just walk away don’t give in to these asshole owners who wanna get rich from one single car
