Gillen’s Cyclops

Just finished up reading the last issues of Uncanny X-Men by Gillen, and I have to say it’s one of my all-time favorites already. Cyclops as the Phoenix is one of the greatest moments ever, and I love the way we get to hear Scott’s inner monolouge as he’s overcome with the Phoenix’s power, and the message Jean had for him. How in the face of this cosmic entity all he ever was is laid bare, and every moment is a cycle of wonder, ecstasy, doubt and regret. And I loved the ending with Sinister, and I loved how this comic cements that Sinister is Scott’s archenemy snd forever will be. Though did that plotline of Sinister being Kate ever get followed up?

Scott and Emma ranked #1 in the fan poll, do you think Marvel will ever seriously revisit them?

With Scott and Emma ranking #1 in the recent fan poll, I’m curious what people think their actual chances are of coming back together in the comics.

Obviously fan polls don’t automatically decide editorial direction, but it does show that there’s still a strong audience for them as a couple.

For me, Scott and Emma worked because they weren’t a “perfect” romance. They were complicated, sharp, political, wounded, and weirdly honest with each other. Their relationship felt very tied to the Morrison/Whedon/Utopia era of the X-Men, where mutant survival, leadership, guilt, and emotional damage were all tangled together.

But at the same time, Marvel has clearly leaned back into Scott/Jean in recent years, especially after Krakoa and From the Ashes.

So what do you think?

Do Scott and Emma still have a real chance of being revisited seriously, or was that relationship too tied to a specific era of X-Men history?

And if Marvel did bring them back, would you want it as a full romance again, unresolved tension, or just mutual respect between exes?

Does anyone else feel like they've gone out of their way to leave Emma out of the story in this summary?

It's just "Jean died, then Cyclops was all alone, the Jean came back" completely leaving out the fact that when he was a mutant leader making all kinds of hard choices he constantly had Emma at this side. She was the one at this side when he fucking died, for Pete's sake.

“Cyclops was right” has now just turned into a mockery now that it has been capitalized and acknowledged by Marvel. Leaving us with shallow versions of Cyclops and Emma.

This is just me voicing my personal frustration as a fan of Cyclops and someone who enjoys both his relationships with Jean and Emma.

Revolutionary Cyclops has now just been turned into a mockery of an edgy phase he went through while not having Jean by his side. Ignoring his development, turmoil and how he broke from the mould of the “status quo”. Now, I may not have personally enjoyed Morrison’s run as much but I enjoyed Whedon’s run and what followed after as he slowly became this revolutionary figure.

Now seeing it being rewritten as “Cyclops was just a sad edgy boy without Jean, and Emma needs no man!” is just eye-rolling. Just typical shallow reductions we have constantly been plagued in superhero comics to keep the status quo of corporate templates and fans who enjoy characters being in a forever stasis.

Seeing United mock it with Emma personally saying it in a true “girl boss” moment where she complains “what did I see in someone as controlling as him.” As if we didn’t READ and SEE what she saw in him in him when she personally psychoanalyzed him and saw WHY he was controlling and UNDERSTOOD it. She knew he would still love Jean because Jean was an important person in his life, his wife, someone who has been with him since childhood. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t love her as well. Many people go through many loves in their life.

Emma saw the revolutionary in Cyclops. Sided with him and understood him. As he saw redeeming qualities in her and understood her. Revolutionary Cyclops didn’t immediately happen because “Jean is gone”. It happens with him realizing things about the world and shedding off the dogma he knew when he was a young and so deeply believed in. People do that. They re-evaluate things they thought were true and find new truths.

And to also see Cyclops fans those we even say “Cyclops was right” celebrate the capitalization of this as if they aren’t being mocked. Just frustrating. I know I’m never going to get a good written and respected Emma and Cyclops unless some radical change happens in editorial or some other Marvel product. But for now, all we have is being thrown a bone of Cyclops’ radical thinking only for him to be put in the status quo box.

X-men evolution made me a fan of Cyclops and the Xmen

This show was so amazing,I always hated the live action movies as a kid and any animated series of X-men as they would always make either wolverine the main character or that stupid love triangle between Scott,Jean and wolverine-which they would always try to embarrass Scott.

This show made me fall in love with the X-men,and reinforced my belief that Cyclops should always be the main character,I know they aged down the characters to be teens but I think it worked out well. (I also love nightcrawler in this show he was cool)

I think many people, myself included, didn’t fully understand the meaning of Emma’s line to Scott: “The truth is, no matter how hard I try, I can’t help playing with fire. How about you, darling?”

This line makes the accusations from haters that Emma “deceived” Scott, “abused her power,” or “assaulted” him even more absurd. Scott directly asks whether this is still telepathic therapy or some kind of weird affair, and Emma does not deny that it has crossed the line. She does not say, “No, Scott, this is still "telepathic therapy".” Instead, she openly frames what they are doing as “playing with fire” — something dangerous, forbidden, and mutual. And Scott agrees to continue.

Not to mention that their first “session” was in New X-Men #128. Emma did not mention any sexology qualification there. She only mentioned it later in passing in #131. She was not officially working as Scott’s therapist; she simply had a qualification. Having a qualification is not the same thing as being someone’s official therapist with a professional agreement and all the rules that come with it.

So no, Emma did not trick Scott into thinking this was still therapy, and she did not force him. Scott knew he was cheating Jean and still chose to continue. The story frames it as an emotional affair, not coercion.
