3D printed Tail tidy DR-Z

I originally designed and printed this last year, I meant to share it sooner but I just forgot. Lets say i was field testing it to make sure it was up to the task... and so far after a couple thousand miles, no issues at all. Since then, I have seen some similar models being sold, but mine is free to all who can print at home. It is designed to be printed using TPU so that it will flex and not snap. The holes for the licence plate are for UK plates so you might need to modify it for other countries.

Kickstand switch bypass

So there is no resistor or anything for the kickstand sensor from under the tank connector down to the switch so I decided to try and bypass the switch. There is 3 wires red, green and black. Red being an ecm 5v feed that’s a square wave to power the sensor electronics. Green is ecm input 0-5v and black is ecm/chassis ground. I believe the actual sensor is a Hall effect type but I haven’t busted mine apart to take pictures of internals. The ecm uses the green wire to monitor voltage coming from the sensor using about 4.9 volts being kick stand down and .48mv up and closed. So simply jumping the green wire to black tells the ecm that the kickstand is up and doesn’t kill ignition. I haven’t spent more time with an oscilloscope to truly determine the ecu logic or what exact switch it is or if the ecu has a random checksum or return voltage fluctuation to set a cel but 200 miles later it appears to work just fine. So all together the ecu wants a grounded signal on the green wire measured at .48 mv and I don’t have a fancy enough meter to determine current so it’s probably well under .01 amps so I think it’s fine to just jump the two and ride.

Balkan Expedition on the new Suzuki DR-Z4S: When reality hits your master plan (Days 1-3 Technical Feedback - YT video )

Hey everyone,

I’m back from my Balkan expedition on the new Suzuki DR-Z4S. My initial master plan was massive, but let’s be honest: reality always gets a vote on a long-distance dual-sport trip, and things didn't go exactly as planned.

I’m currently buried deep in editing hours of footage, so I’ll be dropping the technical write-ups and videos stage by stage as I progress.

Here is my honest, no-BS technical feedback from Days 1 to 3 (Verona -> Ancona -> Albania TET Sec. 8):

  • The Highway Wobble (Tarmac Compromise): Stage 1 was a 300 km slab transfer to the ferry. In full travel trim (heavy rear luggage, 3L extra fuel, handlebar nav tower, aggressive knobbies), the front end gets light. Above 110 km/h (68 mph), the bike started to head-shake/wobble. Removing the OEM bar-end weights to fit my wrap-around handguards definitely reduced dampening. Dropping to 105 km/h (65 mph) fixed it completely. You just have to accept the bike’s limits on tarmac.
  • Off-Road Weapon: Once on the loose rocks and steep climbs of Albania, this bike is a cheat code. I was seriously debating whether to take my Africa Twin CRF1000 on this trip, and I am incredibly happy I left it at home. Turning around on tight single tracks is effortless, and the agility is incredible even with luggage.
  • Trail Reality (River Levels): Due to high water levels, I had to skip Albania Section 14 entirely since it runs right through the riverbed. Even on the main track, the river ford looked sketchy, so I smartened up and bypassed it using the bridge. The tracks get more demanding as you approach Çorovodă, but finding good, affordable local accommodation there was extremely easy.
  • Fuel Range: Averaging around 25 km/l (58 MPG). With the tiny OEM 8.7L tank, you are looking at a hard limit of well over 200 km before running on fumes. Extra fuel bottles saved my day, but a proper aftermarket oversized tank is the only real solution to centralize weight.

For now, I've only managed to edit and publish Part 1 of the video covering the setup and the first stages on my YouTube channel: anbat_adv. The rest will follow as soon as possible.

I’ve also uploaded the full detailed technical log on my hub: drz4s.org.

Brand new 2025 drz4s from dealership oil dipstick smells like gas

I picked up this bike today and have put about 30 break-in miles on it, staying under half throttle. I checked the oil with the dipstick, and it has a slight fuel smell. Is that expected on a brand-new engine, or should I be concerned?

Lowering, clutch and shifter

Has anyone used lowering links from Soupy’s or T-Rex? I really need to lower this thing because I got my butt kicked at a trail with rocky sections.

And has anyone modded their clutch pull feel? I’ve been considering some short levers but I’m not sure how to adjust the pull itself.

Lastly the shifter is tough to get to with the SG22s I tried out. Any recommendations on that?

Thanks!

Broken airbox clip fix

Just serviced oil and air filter and upon reinstalling my air filter the lower clip broke right at the base of the airbox. Now before you say should’ve taken to the dealer or under warranty the dealers in AZ suck and would blame me and probably have my bike for a week just to make me pay out of pocket for an airbox ($350). Since glue and epoxy didn’t work I lathed down a 1/4-20 machine screw bent it in a 60 degree angle drilled a hole with a washer and double nut with loctite. I will update with pictures on Monday after I’ve rode back from work to check my work.

DRZ4S luggage tie down

Just in case anyone is looking for this. I found these tie down loops on Amazon. They fit nicely where your left passenger peg is. I use it to keep my Tusk bags secured evenly on both sides (angle matches muffler side) so my bags don’t pull down on one side and forward on the other. Easy cheap option in case you’re looking. (First pic just because 😎)
