things to do in irvine/nearby thread!

compiling a list of things i love doing in the irvine/oc area as someone who’s been here for undergrad and currently masters! feel free to contribute and ask questions :')

in general

Irvine is the safest city in the US. This utopia is because of the masterful planning of the Irvine Company. You'll appreciate the consistency of design and colors between shopping centers. If you're a local like me, you just LOVE the Irvine Company.

Also, we're a car-centric community. Look into a Zipcar (a student favorite because they're not like the big companies who want you to be 25) or rideshare/carpool options.

the big three

idk anyone who calls it "the big three" but i need a heading so bare with me.

Irvine Spectrum

  • Silverlake Ramen, Pepper Lunch, Somisomi, Shake Shack are a few of the places I frequent there. It's nearby, so you'll likely gravitate here first.
  • Irvine Improv and Regal (this is the theater with 4DX and IMAX 70mm).

Fashion Island (Newport)

Newport Beach is an affluent neighborhood. Don't go to Fashion Island just for Chick-Fil-A or the Panda Express. It may be priced a little more just because (cannot confirm because again, I avoid them).

Not at Fashion Island, but by the beach, I have to note: there is Seaside Bakery (yes. that seaside bakery) and a Taco Bell Cantina.

South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa)

  • I'm either eating at Marugame Udon or Wahoo's, but there is also Din Tai Fung.
  • Or, I'm walking around because I want to go to Uniqlo, Gentle Monster, Pop Mart, or other stores. More higher-end designer brands as well, if you're into that.

Honorable? Mention (University Town Center/UTC)

  • The little shopping and food area by UC Irvine. You'll likely want to go here since it's close-ish to the shuttles. I actually don't remember if places open that early though.
  • If you need to go to a Target and it's on Campus Drive, it's going to be a mini one. While students aren't moving in until late September, I'd just go to another Target in case.
  • The Taco Bell in UTC is a "Live Mas Cafe" meaning they have specialty coffee drinks.
  • Three boba places, but you can do better than what's there. Very very better than what's there.

more food

K-BBQ:

  • MrBBQJr in Tustin does AYCE for $23.99 before 4PM. (Shout-out to David, he's my favorite server). It's in the District, which also has places like 3CAT (I love their Mochi drinks) and IKE's Sandwiches.
  • Wang Cho in Santa Ana/Costa Mesa is also AYCE. I've never had problems being seated, but don't think that means the food/service is bad. I always come back for their brisket.
  • Shik Do Rak, also AYCE; was always the go-to-place with my undergrad friends. Waitlist usually packed.
  • Baekjeong is expensive but worth it as well, more premium meats. Long wait as well, plan ahead.

For Thai Food, I love getting my curry at Hanuman or Manaao.

For Katsu, it's either Hako (higher-end, long wait) or Coco Ichibanya (chain).

cafe, boba, etc.

  • Omomo. Get a Camo Thai. I line up at this place before it opens at 12pm with others. It's that serious.
  • Nearby Omomo, there's Wunderlust. Love their Vietnamese Rocky Road.

I'm gatekeeping the rest. I love the cafe and cafe adjacent scene here too much. Kidding, I'll come back to update.

Off Site Parking Question

Just curious, do we think parking enforcement will be extra heavy at nearby locations such as the Irvine Spectrum, Woodbury Town Center or even The Market Place in Tustin during Daisy Chain? Have businesses and employees who work in those areas been told they will need to have special parking passes like the neighborhood residents by great park

Bag policy- bringing multiple bags?

I emailed support to ask but they said they weren’t able to answer my question since it’s up to the security company, but maybe some of you have been to more festivals/concerts than I have recently and can give me your experience- does security care if you bring in more than 1 bag, assuming all bags follow the rules?

I’m not planning to pack my whole house, just 1 extra bag for 3 total between me and my daughter. I have a clear bag that’s the max size allowed. My 9 year old has a smaller clear bag, bc she’s small. I want to bring a 2nd large clear bag- since it’s such a long day I’m planning to bring extra clothes, some travel size toiletries, meds, picnic blanket, etc (I have a locker to stash stuff in) and it may not all fit in our 2 bags. Worst case scenario I can pack her small bag inside a larger one so we each enter with 1 bag, but that still wastes a decent amount of space. Normally I pack very light for concerts but I’m also normally seeing a single band at a time with 0 kids in tow.

Irvine locals: any tips for the area? restaurant recs? any other shows?

I'm looking at frankie quinones at the irvine improv on the 28th or maybe audien after dcf at time.. anything else going on the day before dcf?

what's a good spot for mac n cheese...or a steak...any other "instafamous" places to try or (stay away from)?

thank you!

Do you think the GA+ and VIP private bar and air conditioned restroom are the same, or will each group get their own private bar/restroom?

First time at a music festival. Just trying to plan accordingly.

Did you attend Lilith Fair? Would you talk to me for a story?

Hi there! I’m a journalist for the local news in Los Angeles who is interested in interviewing someone who attended Lilith Fair AND is also attending Daisy Chain Fields. Bonus points if you are going with your daughter or a young person in your life who could also talk about the fest! I would love to talk about the musical acts and how the industry has changed for women (or hasn’t) since Lilith Fair’s inception.

If this is you, please comment and I will message you (and share my credentials). Thanks and happy festing! 🌼

Waitlist wristbands arrived!

Got my wristbands shipped and received for those waiting for their waitlisted bands.

Gotta say the GA bands are cuter 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wrist band missing/lost or stolen? Don’t Panic We’re gonna be alright

I knew my tickets were lost en route immediately when they never left Kentucky.

I immediately reached out to Daisy Fields team and got an immediate response to not worry i can get a new one at will call.

I verified with UPS today that in fact my package has gotten lost. Even though it hasn’t been updated on the website. Next step is to get that wrist band canceled so someone else doesn’t try and use it. I’ll post the email address to notify front gate below.
This is a First year fest for CHARITY: I’m reminding myself my moneys going to great people and that I know I’ll be ok this is just adding an adventure to the mix. 💚head up high festi friends

Jampack Wristbands

Has anyone who got their tickets via Jampack actually received their wristbands or even a confirmation that they’ve been shipped? It’s been radio silence for me.

which UC irvine shuttle is best?

hey daisies! we are staying at the Homewood suites near the airport, and trying to figure out the best way to get to the festival. Thinking maybe taking one of the UC Irvine shuttles? But there are three pick up spots:
- Health & Science Parking Structure
- Lot 70
- Mesa Parking Structure

any idea which might be best in terms of getting to the festival from our hotel? Mesa parking looks marginally closer just in terms of walking distance, but I can’t tell for sure. i’m thinking to take an Uber to/from the parking lot and the shuttle from there.

Alternatively, we also have reservation reservations in Anaheim that came with our tickets, but it seems like more of a pain to get there and back to the airport in any case.
