Games to help with basics of staying on beat/actually learning rhythm?

Hey friends! Started getting into ddr/pui lately and having a blast. Been playing some eternna on the side to help me get more comfortable with chart reading, and as an experiment, tried playing on mute and found out I did basically exactly as good.

I have not been playing rhythm games, I have been playing press button at judgment line games.

I do generally struggle to find the beat/stay on it, any recommendations for games/charts/strategies to learn these skills?

Pad advice- need something that I can put away. I remember soft pads being horrible and slippery. Hardwood floor is the surface.

I haven’t played much since my PS2. I started with soft pads on carpet. I want to get back into it for fitness reasons.

Hardwood floor, and dogs. So I’d like something I can “put away”. Space isn’t an issue.

I really struggle with making decisions when given options. I think that’s why I can’t just read through the posts.

Can you help me out with a simple- here’s what you should buy and here’s how to put it away?

B2L / Xgaes questions - Sensor differences & bar

I'm going to buy one of these pads, and I'm on the fence as to which one.

  1. I think both are going to be functionally identical, but what I don't understand is the differences between the Standard, Pro, and Ultimate on the Xgaes as compared to the one (arcade replica) of the B2L. I *think* the Ultimate Xgaes is also an arcade replica. Is that the case? Is it better than the B2L in any way? I know the Xgaes is deburred to avoid sharp edges and includes some replacement parts. I'm not sure that's the case with the B2L. It also looks like the Xgaes only includes the DDR style bar. (I prefer the ITG / pump style that you can configure the B2L with)

  2. I am curious how hard removing the bar is. I'll need to pull this out of the garage and set it up in the livingroom when it's time to play, which would mean attaching and removing the bar fairly often. Is this time consuming?
    a. I THINK I can just leave the cover off and have the bolts exposed for qucker access. Is that right? Any reason not to do this? (as seen here at 21:30 timestamp).

Help Looking For Cheap Desktop Gaming PC That Will Support OpenITG And Stepmania fully?

Hi all!

Own a StepX Pad and I am seeking a cheap Desktop Gaming PC that will fully support programs like OpenITG and SM. I do play both ITG and DDR.

Little background. I have been playing since 07-08 and slowly upgraded for play and performance. I have had multiple pads and have been extremely happy with the StepX for over 5 years. I’ve used OpenITG for over a decade and it’s my favorite program to run. Having installed codes for timing also for better play. Been recently playing at Round1 for DDR, but I miss home play.

Are there any decent Gaming Desktops out that people may have that fully support the programs and pad? Looking at a cheap Gaming PC that is around $600.

Thanks! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Anyone else’s thumbs do this?

I’ve been practicing DDR at my local arcade (mainly touhou tracks), and I’ve noticed that after each session, my thumbs keep twitching. I tend to grip the handlebar unless I feel the urge to hop around the pad. The twitching lasts a day or so before going away. Is this normal or is there something wrong with me?

Fitness Focused DDR Clone - Seeking testers

Hey I’m working on a hobby project which is a StepMania mod for pad players. I was annoyed by fumbling with menus during a workout and also the limited music selection (hard to find good simfiles, basically impossible for new or less popular music)

with two features:

  1. Fitness-focused continuous song delivery with warm-up cool-down (think about how treadmills alternate difficulty for HIIT)
  2. A bring-your-own-music system where you can play audio from Spotify or YouTube (or any audio source) and generate pretty-decent simfiles automatically. Goes with your existing chart collection.

Curious if anyone besides me is interested in this. I kinda want to make an informal “research study” to see if it helps people get more fit.

If you have a pad and play on a PC/Mac and want to try this out please leave a comment.

Does DDR 3rdMIX play differently from Hottest Party, or am I just struggling?

Earlier today, I was playing Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party on the Wii (the American version). I also have a Japanese PS1 with the Japanese-exclusive DDR 3rdMIX, and I’ve noticed a pretty big difference in how well I’m able to play between the two.

I found Hottest Party on the Wii much easier to play. On the PS1, I’m struggling to even get a C, while I can do noticeably better on the Wii. I’m also using a different dance pad for the PS1. I just purchased this one from Amazon, so I’m not sure if the pad itself could be part of the problem.

I’m still a relatively new/semi-new player, although I have played DDR in the past, and I’m definitely not the best at it yet.

So, could this difference just be because I’m playing a different game/version? Does the region or version of DDR affect the scoring or difficulty? Or could the dance pad I’m using be making that much of a difference?

I’d appreciate any advice from more experienced DDR players!

Best way to keep CobaltFlux pads from sliding on carpet?

I have a pair of CobaltFlux pads arranged for doubles, on a custom-built plywood base. During play, the platform keeps gradually sliding on the medium-pile carpet (always away and to the left, for some reason). I tried putting a mat underneath that was made of the same type of rubberized foam as the mats you can buy as cabinet liners, and it reduced the sliding but didn't eliminate it.

I'm thinking the next step is to buy some vinyl runners (with small carpet-gripping spikes) and staple it to the bottom of the platform. Is there a better solution? If not, is there a style of runner that is recommended?

Trying to find an old song, long shot

Hey DDR community, I'm hoping you can help me out.

A long, long time ago (2004 or prior) I played DDR in an arcade and there was a song I loved. I don't remember the exact version of the game at that location, and I believe the song and its title may have been in Japanese. Obviously this makes it difficult to find.

Is there a song list anywhere that has every single DDR song ever in one single list? I've found the lists of each game and have been looking up song lists from every US arcade release. I vividly remember the refrain and I've even done the "hum the song into your phone and we'll find it for you" with no luck. I know the song was around 130-135 bpm. It was very upbeat, major key, female singer. Never heard it before and never heard it since so it's not a song that's been often repeated in later games, nor is it a very popular song like Butterfly or Bumblebee or anything.

I know this is very difficult to explain to someone, especially over text, but I'm hoping someone could help me at least start in a direction. Is it possible a game for another region was somehow brought over to the US? Other knock-off games that were very similar around that time? I've gone through virtually all US arcade game set lists and no luck.

Edit: Thank you everyone for suggestions! Definitely going to check into the Korean song lists, wasn't sure if they would have been over in the United States but seems like it was fairly common. Also going to check into Pump It Up and ITG. Will be going through lists and suggestions over the next few days as able, between life things. If I find it I will definitely let you (and the people in my life I have been bugging about it) know what song it is!

Update: Y'all. You did it. Everyone who said it was Korea 3rd Mix was absolutely correct. I was listening to the link provided by u/Aggressive-Nature550 with a song list. Going through every song, like I had before with many song list videos, until it started. I stopped. I honestly teared up. It is almost exactly as I remembered it, so I recognized it instantly.

I had moments I thought I was crazy. That the song didn't actually exist, that I just made it up, that it was different songs squished together in my head. But it is the exact main cadence, pitch, tempo that I remember.

Song: 호기심 (CURIOSITY) / 한스밴드 (HANS BAND)

So thank you all again so much! I will forever be thankful to strangers who helped me with something bugging me for over 20 years. Now pardon me as I go listen to this song on repeat for the next week to make up for lost time.
