Alaska wrongly removed eligible voters from active voter lists

NEW: Less than a month before Alaska's August primary, the state removed up to 3,500 voters after flagging them as noncitizens.

However, some of those people were eligible voters, including a few who presented the type of proof of citizenship championed in the anti-voter SAVE America Act. https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/alaska-wrongly-removed-eligible-voters-from-active-voter-lists/

We made some changes to our weekly newsletter. Do you like them?

Hello! I’m Andrew Wyrich, the newsletter editor at Democracy Docket. Today was the first day of our launch of some pretty big changes to our “On The Docket” newsletter that comes out on Friday mornings.

Our biggest focus was to still give you a weekly rundown of the week’s most pressing news — but also to give you exclusive information from our reporters that you can’t find anywhere else. Oh, and we also wanted to show you a little bit of behind-the-scenes fun.

If you haven’t subscribed, you should now to make sure you get it in your inbox next week. But if you are a subscriber to our newsletters already, I’d love for you to tell me what you think of the changes! Or anything else you’d like to see in the newsletters!

Can’t wait to chat more.

New Jersey won’t give DOJ data on noncitizens erroneously registered to vote

NEW: New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she will not provide the DOJ with data on the 6,600 noncitizens who were erroneously registered to vote because of a software malfunction.

"They are working to weaponize personal data, and they don't have a reputation of keeping it private," she said. https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/new-jersey-wont-give-doj-data-on-noncitizens-erroneously-registered-to-vote/

Wanted to share the good news.

Democracy Docket will post a story on this soon, but I wanted to be the first to let you know that a Federal Court just DISMISSED the Department of Justice lawsuit seeking to compel Kentucky to provide the DOJ with access to its complete statewide voter registration database.

DOJ is now 0-17 in these case. 0-8 before judges appointed by Trump. And, my law firm, Elias Law Group remains undefeated. https://www.democracydocket.com/cases/kentucky-doj-voter-data-access-challenge/

House passes SAVE America Act anti-voting measures in budget reconciliation, stock trading bills

BREAKING: The House voted 216-214 to pass a budget reconciliation bill that includes $10 billion worth of election-related grants for coaxing states into adopting anti-voting measures like those in the SAVE America Act.

The vote takes Trump one step closer to enacting his anti-democratic pet proposal. https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/house-passes-save-america-act-anti-voting-measures-in-budget-reconciliation-stock-trading-bills/

A tale of two clerical errors: Texas got a pass. New Jersey got a conspiracy theory.

My latest is a tale of two clerical errors involving noncitizens registered to vote. Texas got a pass. New Jersey got a conspiracy theory.

Don't believe the lies Trump is telling. Don't buy into the right wing smears.

The problems with proof of citizenship that Republicans aren't talking about

Do Americans know what they’re getting with Trump’s crusade to require proof of citizenship to vote? It’s not as simple as showing a photo ID.

Here’s what you need to know👇

Republicans keep peddling the claim that proving citizenship at the polls is not a big deal.

But there are only two documents that do so for someone born in the United States: an unexpired passport or an original or certified copy of a birth certificate.

Driver’s licenses – even REAL IDs – do not prove citizenship.

Only five states — Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington — issue Enhanced Driver's Licenses that are restricted to U.S. citizens.

Only about half of Americans even have a passport. And Black Americans have much lower rates of holding passports than White Americans.

This is not a coincidence. This is a way for Trump to disadvantage one of the most loyal groups of Democratic voters.

Not everyone in the U.S. has a birth certificate, either.

Older voters are less likely to have been born in a hospital, where they would have received an official birth certificate.

And older Black voters who were born in the Jim Crow South were oftentimes excluded from hospitals.

Even for those who do have a birth certificate, it may not be enough.

The overwhelming majority of women in heterosexual marriages have changed their last name.

This means the name on their birth certificate won’t match their current name, and that document can’t be used to prove citizenship.

Once again, this is not a coincidence.

It is another way for Trump and the Republican Party to disadvantage a group of voters who are more likely to vote Democrat.

Trump and Republicans’ goal is not just to keep non-citizens from voting. It’s to keep Democrats, lawful U.S. citizens and eligible voters from casting a ballot.

The fact that it’s confusing is the point. The fact that it requires voters to jump through multiple hoops is part of the strategy.

The SAVE Act is deliberate in its targets

Trump, the GOP and the legacy media say Americans overwhelmingly support photo ID to vote.

“Do you think that what the American people want is that their driver's licenses won’t work?” Marc Elias asks.

The problem with birth certificates as voter ID

Roughly 70% of women in heterosexual marriages have changed their last name.

That means using their birth certificate as proof of citizenship to vote is not an option.

This is not a coincidence — it’s a deliberate effort to suppress Democratic votes.
