Cavalier King Charles

Hello! I live in an apartment with my parents, and we'd like to adopt a beautiful, calm dog. From my research, the King Charles Spaniel seems to be the most well-known for its consistently calm temperament.

But I would, of course, be grateful for your opinions! 😊 Thank you!

Any suggestions of dog breed?

What breed would be best for us?

So I know this is a common question but I am currently at a place where I am ready to do my research and figure out what the best dog for my fiancé and I would be.

A bit about us:
We both work, he has a typical work day (leaves the house around 6:00-6:30, home around 4:30-5:00) whereas my job is more flexible and my days vary a lot more (usually leaving around 8:00-8:30 but could be home anywhere from 2 to 6pm, some days I work more in the evening, sometimes weekends, etc).
We are both experienced dog owners, he has mostly owned labs and I have had a variety of mixed breeds, a husky, a Brittany, and German shepherds. I’ve been around a lot of bully breeds as well and really love their personalities and stature.
We currently have a senior lab but no other pets and no kids currently but do plan to have kids in the future and have friends/family that come over often with small children.
We own our home and have a very spacious back yard, pool, nearby dog park, hiking trails, etc.

What we are looking for:
I prefer larger breeds, stockier dogs, protective, very intelligent but also a little bit Velcro. I do not want another long haired breed in my future. I like dogs that are a visual deterrent and can go from terrifying to baby friendly.
My fiancé has always had labs, loves labs, golden and Weimaraners. He does not use the dogs for hunting/sport it’s just a visual/personality preference. He wants a dog that can be good around children and aging parents. Very loyal, very obedient (we know this is largely due to training, but he wants high trainability).

We likely won’t be getting a dog for another 12-18 months due to the wedding and current plans but I want to start looking into breeders, breed-specific rescues, making plans for any changes that may come based on the individual breed we choose, etc.

All suggestions/help is welcome!!

Corgi or Collie for first dog?

Trying to decide which breed to get as a first time dog owner. Both herding breeds and I have a decent understanding of their requirements. Not completely new to dogs as I’ve had family and a significant other with a dog.

But am curious which breed others would recommend from experience? Currently sharing a smaller house with a roommate and their dog. But am fairly active and able to provide an hour or two of exercise a day.

We're excited to let you know that we're celebrating the Cocker Spaniel on the AKC's Facebook page, Instagram Stories, and website today! Our Breed of the Day series highlights a different breed Monday - Friday to educate our followers on AKC-recognized breeds. While this sub is always for the Cocker Spaniel fans, we're loving all of the anecdotes about this wonderful breed on our posts.

Issue with finding ideal dog breed for our first Dog

Hi, we are looking for our fisr dog, after months of preparing ourselves. We are in our Thirties, no kids, our own home with small garden.
I've filled form below, if anyone could help, that would be fantastic as we cant make our minds...

Thank you !

  1. Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

First dog of myown, before we had a family dogs ( mostly boxers )

  1. Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a \[reputable breeder\]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)?

reputable breeder

  1. Describe your ideal dog.

Medium size, up to 20kg. Not shedding a ton, easy to train and easy around other people and animals. ideally with minimal healt issues. Able to ocassionaly walk longer walks, but comfortable with short ones too as weather in UK doesnt always allow 20km strolls. Rare, less uncommon breeds are deifniately something we like, but not a nessesity. Dog which will be balanced, with cheeky attitude and healthy balance of being indenpendant, and clingy

  1. What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

Boston terrier - For all characteristics apart from health issues and being able to do long walks due to face buiild. I had a look at Shiba inu, but im worried of challange. If labrador would come in smaller sizes, that would be fantastic - altough its a super common dog and this puts us off a bit. We had a look at amstaffs, want to visit basenji breeder too. Dogs like poodles, pug, english bulldogs, french bulldogs are a no go. we love them, but too many issues and wont fit our lifestyle

  1. What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

I want him to not beg, fetch, ignore other people when on walks and i want to trust him that he wont run away on first occasion.

  1. Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

no

\*\*Care Commitments\*\*

  7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

1/3h a day

  1. How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average?  What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

I wanted to train him myself probably max 1h a day for training only, with 1 visit a week with profesional trainer.

  1. How much regular brushing are you willing to do?  Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home?  If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

Ideally if there wouldnt be too much grooming at home. occasional professional visit is not a problem, but maybe not more often thatn evert 3 months ? Obviosuly cleaning dog reghulary doesnt fall under grooming, but i dont want to spend 1h each day with brush just to make sure there is no furr everywhere

\*\*Personal Preferences\*\*

  1. What size dog are you looking for?

Small, Medium

  1. How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

Moderate sheding, moderate/low barking, no slobber

  1. How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

Just occasionally as its not legal in UK. Maybe occasionally on beach etc.

\*\*Dog Personality and Behavior\*\*

  1. Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

i would like to have a dog which wont mind a snugging

  1. Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

one which dont mind do its own thing but not one which is fully indenpendant like a cat.

  1. How  would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard?  How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

Friendly to strangers and visitors.

  1. Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

Yes, but i would like to avoid breeds which lean towards agressive behaviours.

  1. Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

Destroying at home and constant yapping/yelling ( like huskies or german sheppards )

\*\*Lifestyle\*\*

  1. How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

maybe an hour day, we both work from home but occasionally when we go for shopping or to the gym.

  1. What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

same as above.

  1. Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets?  What breed or type of animal are they?

Visiting french bulldog, no other animals at home.

  1. Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

\*no

  1. Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

We owe our house

  1. What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

UK, West YOrkshire

  1. What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

winter between 1 down to -5, summer on average 18/22 with occasional heat waves up to 28/32

\*\*Additional Information and Questions\*\*

  1. Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.

There is none

Dog breed for me?

My wife and I recently rescued a 5-month female Aussiedoodle (Muna) and showered her with as much love, care, training, and fulfillment as we could. Unfortunately, my wife received some bad news that she will need to undergo a severe surgery that will cause limits to her activity level, which is something we have been battling for the last year. With my wife having her physical limitations, most of Muna’s exercise, training, and play time was left to me. While we both cherished the time we had with her, we found it incompatible with our full-time schedules, mixed with the medical news, to continue providing for her full needs. Muna was rehomed to a family that was prepared for her energy and excited for the challenge/satisfaction of caring for a working breed!

All that to say, my wife and I are utterly heartbroken, and are eagerly awaiting the time we are able to invite another dog into our family. Before that time arises, we plan to research a breed that more closely reflects our lifestyle.

So now the question to you, what breeds have you come across that might fit our desires? We loved the excitement and affection that we received from our Aussiedoodle, but found with our working schedules, her energy and mental needs required too much time. Being able to engage in formal training was a thrill, and we hope to do it again with our next dog. We enjoyed taking Muna out for walks/runs/park, but also found it discouraging to not be able to come home and relax/cuddle with her while watching a show/reading/etc. Muna was a medium size, which is our desire. Lastly, my wife and I are both allergic, so hypoallergenic breeds are a preference, but we are also open to any tips for managing allergies with non-hypoallergenic breeds. We’d love to know what you all think!

What mixed dog breed is she?

My son got this beautiful puppy, but we can’t figure out what she’s mixed with. She chews a LOT but is also very intelligent.

Mini aussie??

Our baby is 3 years old and we were told she was a mini. But she's like 50 pounds. Still short though?? She is slightly taller than our heeler jack russell mix. She is the biggest goober in the whole world.
