LG Sound Suite Review - A Seriously Immersive Multi-Channel Home Theater Setup (Tried Sonos Arc and Samsung Q990F)

LG sent me five Dolby Atmos FlexConnect (DAFC) devices from their Sound Suite series as part of a promotional event, including one H7 soundbar and four M7 speakers. Although the products were provided to me for free, the thoughts and impressions shared in this review are entirely my own. The H7 is powered by LG’s α11 Processor, while the system as a whole leverages Peerless drivers.

I tested the LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 with my 77-inch LG G5, using the H7 soundbar connected through HDMI eARC set to passthrough, along with the four M7 speakers as front left/right and rear left/right channels. I also initially tested just the four M7 speakers without the H7, using the G5 as the hub and the G5 internal speakers as the dedicated center channel.

Overall, the LG Sound Suite is the most immersive home theater speaker setup I have used. I previously owned a Sonos Arc with One SL rears and most recently a Samsung Q990F. The Q990F is still a strong system, but the LG setup feels more like what I hoped the Q990F would be. The biggest difference for me is having discrete front left and right speakers, which creates a wider soundstage and a truly convincing surround sound experience. Better yet, each M7 is a 2.1.1 system, with a 4” woofer unit whereas the Q990F rears do not have this. Having four 2.1.1 systems working together in unison with the 9.1.6 H7 soundbar as its brains via DAFC is very impressive and makes the Q990F feel watery in comparison.

Notably, despite having no W7, which is the subwoofer that can be added to the system, the bass performance really surprised me. Although the built-in woofers in the H7 and M7s cannot fully replace a true LFE channel dedicated subwoofer, they produce enough bass that I am not missing a subwoofer as much as I expected. I live in a condo, so in reality, the Sound Suite without the dedicated W7 is probably flying close enough to the sun as it is in terms of bass. I sold my Q990F after listening to this system and was planning on buying a W7. However, due to adopting a senior cat with medical needs coming up, the W7 will have to wait, but I do not feel like the system is anemic due to the absence of a dedicated larger subwoofer.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, or DAFC, is a great feature that requires no effort and lends flexibility in terms of where the speakers can be placed. With DAFC, you can run speaker optimization instead of working toward perfect placement, which is not always feasible in irregularly shaped rooms. This really helped in my space because I have glass on one side, an open area on the other, high ceilings, and a brick facade. Room Calibration Pro helps further tune the system to the space, which seemed to give a bit of polish to the audio. The great thing is you can have a system with four discrete speakers, without needing to place them in the traditional four corner positions.

For my testing, I watched Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Apex on Netflix, Elysium, 6 Underground on Netflix, and The Pitt on Crave/HBO as a dialogue test. The Pitt was actually great because it showcased how well the dialogue stayed clear while the ambient ER noise felt impressively layered around the room. Dialogue is big for me as I often use subtitles, but I do not feel like I really need them with this system. Perhaps the discrete left and right speakers allow the dedicated center channels to focus more on clear dialogue.

For movies and PS5 gaming overall, the system felt more enveloping than my Q990F, especially with ambient effects and room noise. I am really excited for my Blu-ray copies of Blade Runner 2049 and Alien: Romulus to be delivered, as I expect these will really shine with the immersive bubble the LG Sound Suite provides.

Taste is of course variable nevertheless I find that the design is another massive win. The speakers look much sleeker than the Q990F and frankly rivals Sonos in terms of fitting into a modern living space. I also like the subtle cozy LED status lights. I certainly will not miss the lack of aesthetic appeal of the Q990F, power to you if you do like the Q990F looks though!

A have found that the LG ThinQ app is useful for controlling the system, full EQ and tone adjustments, as well as checking audio formats are coming through correctly e.g. content playing in Atmos. The setup was pretty smooth, if you are technically savvy then you will be totally fine. As with any tech it is helpful if you are familiar with 2.4 ghz / 5 ghz wifi router settings/capabilities. Notably, having a dedicated 2.4ghz / 5ghz SSID(s) is needed. Given some variance of wifi routers I can foresee some people that are more plug and play oriented running into some difficulties and blaming the system.

A few downsides: the H7 soundbar’s is dimensionally deep, which is not bad, bigger drives etc. but the size may complicate some mounting setups, it took some creative tinkering to get the H7 attached to my Mantel Mount 815 (mounting to a wall would be easy with the included brackets). Additionally, there are currently no official wall mounts for the M7s or M5s; Sound Follow was subtle enough that I could not clearly tell the difference; and using only M7s with the TV as the hub gives you less manual control than using the H7.

I also would not recommend starting with only four M7s and using the TV as the center channel if you care about the best audio experience. The four M7s and G5 speakers utilizing DAFC worked quite well, but ultimately the M7s are dragged down by the TV speakers limitations. I would instead start with the H7, where LG’s Alpha 11 AI Processor acts as the brain to pull the M7s and H7 together. From there add rears, then add discrete front left/right speakers along with the W7 as budget allows. Notably, LG did let me know that they will be releasing an update in the near future to allow for more customizability of the EQ, tonality and sound mode settings when driving the M5s/M7s with a compatible LG TV (without the H7). From LG directly “For 2025 DAFC-supported TV models, support for Sound Effect selection through the TV settings menu is currently expected in July.”

My final verdict to all those considering the LG Sound Suite is that it is definitely worth your purchase. The Sound Suite does indeed fall into the premium pricing bracket, which may be too much for many people. I personally would have struggled to buy the whole package in one go, which makes the modularity of the system a big perk. That being said, when looking at unit-to-unit pricing, it is on par with brands such as Sonos and Samsung.

The LG Sound Suite has very strong multi-channel performance with stellar immersion. A particularly great pick whether you are looking for flexible placement of discrete speakers or simply looking for a very immersive audio experience. The only people I do not think this would be for are those with large physical media collections that require DTS support. Or somebody that has the space and technical abilities to do a full AVR setup with the whole theatre setup e.g. dedicated ceiling speakers. Short of that, this is the closest you are going to get while keeping things streamlined and comparatively easy.

TLDR:
I highly recommend the LG Sound Suite system to anyone looking for a premium, highly immersive surround sound with the ability to have flexible speaker placement.

Pros:
• Extremely immersive surround sound with a much wider soundstage thanks to discrete front left/right speakers.
• Each M7 speaker has its own woofer, giving fuller sound and stronger bass than Samsung’s Q990F’s rear speakers.
• Bass performance is surprisingly strong even without the optional W7 subwoofer.
• Dolby Atmos FlexConnect makes speaker placement flexible and works well in oddly shaped rooms.
• Dialogue clarity is excellent, even during noisy scenes.
• Gaming and movies feel more enveloping and cinematic than competing systems.
• The design is sleek and modern, closer to Sonos aesthetics than Samsung.
• The modular system lets users build gradually over time.
• LG ThinQ app provides solid EQ/control features.
Cons:
• No DTS support, which could be a deal breaker for people with large DTS Blu-ray collections.
• The H7 soundbar is physically deep and can be difficult to mount on Mantel Mounts (NOT a problem for typical wall mounting)
• No official wall mounts yet for the M7/M5 speakers.
• Setup may frustrate less tech-savvy users because proper Wi-Fi configurations/specs matter. This goes for any Wi-Fi hub based audio systems though.
• Using only M7 speakers with the TV (without the H7 soundbar) gives lustlacker audio results and fewer controls due to limitations of TV speakers.

Dolby Atmos for Headphones and Earbuds

Hello everyone, I've been going down a bit of a rabbit whole trying to understand Dolby Atmos and I need someone to set me straight :D

My understanding is Dolby Atmos proper refers to movies and games that provide a speaker receiver with 3D positional data that can then be processed according to your speaker setup to create a truly immersive sound. Then there was Dolby Atmos for Headphones which was a regular old binaural audio HRTF that doesn't use positional data and instead simply virtualizes a regular audio signal. I don't know if that is still true or the technology has advanced.

I recently bought the Technics AZ100 earbuds which have Dolby Atmos support. The app clearly says to make sure you enable Atmos on your connected device to enjoy Atmos content. That seems wrong as the earbuds themeselves are processing the audio. Both spatialization and head tracking work great on the buds when atmos is disabled on my Samsung tablet. Enabling atmos on my source seems to double process the signal making it loud and worse, even with Atmos content.

Then I've on the PC side of things with wired headphones, I've been trying out the Dolby Access app there to use Dolby Atmos for Headphones. Enabling Atmos modifies the sound, but there's an option called surround virtualizer which then further modifies the sound even on Atmos content.

My assumption would be enabling atmos but disabling surround virtualizer would pass through regular audio signals without processing but process any atmos signals. Then enabling surround virtualizer would allow for virtualizing 2.1 / 5.1 / 7.1 signals. But that's not the case. Both atmos and surround virtualizer modify regular and atmos signals. I don't get it. I can't find a help page or wiki for Dolby Access. The FAQ is useless. There's no tooltips. The app is so barebones.

If I want to play Battlefield--which has Dolby Atmos support--on my Windows PC, what do I need to enable to get the Atmos experience? Presumably I need to enable Atmos in game, and enable Atmos on my headphones, but what about the surround virtualizer on Dolby Access?

If I want to watch a Dolby Atmos movie on my Samsung tablet then I enable Atmos on my Technics, but do I also enable Atmos on the tablet? The app tells me to but it worsens the sound quality.

I am so confused...

Dolby Atmos System for $3-4k

Trying to narrow down the best home theater setup for my living room in the $3,000–$4,000 range and could use some opinions from people who’ve heard these systems.

Room is roughly 20x20 with 8ft ceilings and opens into the kitchen/hallway on one side, so it’s not a sealed theater room and effectively adds another 10–15ft of open space. Couch is about 8–10ft back on a centered seating position, though both listeners sit slightly off-axis. Main use is movies, Atmos gaming, streaming, and some stereo music. Running a 55” OLED with some center channel placement limitations.

Current receiver is a Denon AVR-S750H, though I’m considering upgrading to an Onkyo TX-RZ50 later.

The Polk Reserve setup I can get locally is:

• R600 Towers (pair)
• R350 Slim Center
• R100 Surrounds (pair)
• R900 Atmos Heights (pair)
• SVS PB-1000 Pro Subwoofer

Retail online this setup is roughly ~$4,600+ before tax/shipping, but I can get it locally for about $4,000 out the door including tax.

Other system I’m seriously considering:

• Triangle Borea BR08 Towers
• Triangle BRC1 Center
• Triangle BR03 Surrounds
• Triangle BRA1 Atmos Speakers
• SVS PB-1000 Pro Subwoofer

That setup comes out to roughly ~$3,700 before tax/shipping.

Also looking at a KEF setup:

• KEF Q7 Meta Towers
• KEF Q6 Meta Center
• KEF Q1 Meta Surrounds
• KEF Q8 Meta Atmos Speakers
• SVS PB-1000 Pro Subwoofer

That setup comes out to about ~$4,000.

I’m also considering swapping the subwoofer options around and possibly using:
• RSL Speedwoofer 10S MKII
instead of the PB-1000 Pro.

I’ve also looked at:
• SVS Prime system
• Klipsch RP II setup with RP-404C II
• Definitive Technology Dymension setup

For my room/setup:

• Would you stick with the Polk Reserve system?
• Is the R350 the right choice over the R400 for slightly off-axis seating?
• Would the Triangle setup sound more immersive/musical?
• Is the PB-1000 Pro worth the size increase over the 10S MKII?
• How would the KEF Q Meta system compare for movies and Atmos?
• Would the AVR-S750H be enough short term for these setups until I upgrade?
• Which setup would you personally choose for mixed movies/gaming/music in a semi-open living room?

Dolby Atmos systems speificially for music

Right now i have the full sonos setup in my living room, which gives you fake Atmos.

I'm learning everything about home theaters for my future me, who will maybe have a dedicated home theater, where i obviously would use a proper Atmos setup.

But what about music? Is Sonos the best, that exits for that purpose? Or would you use a proper Atmos setup for home theaters, that is connected to the TV which Apple Music in it? Or is there something else? I mean for music it's also very important to be conventient like Sonos. Don't wanna turn on the TV everytime i wanna listen to music

Audio broken for Dolby Atmos setup

gonna keep it short,

Whenever I try to play media that's 7.1 SS on Plex to my Dolby Atmos speakers, I can't hear any voices, no matter the tone or pitch. My best guess is that the 7.1 is routing to non-existent channels instead of the DA counterparts. How do I make it route correctly?

watching Plex via a PS5 to an LG TV running web os and Sony speakers, and content is being stored on my pc

Prime Video is a Dolby Vision and Atmos nightmare and no one knows what’s going on.

Most of the titles that historically were provided in DV and Atmos suddenly aren’t. I’m in the highest-paying tier. After hours of wasted time, I had to beg and plead to get through four different reps at Customer Service before I got someone who had even HEARD of Dolby Vision, but had no idea what it is.

This is beyond absurd.

In the end, the closest thing I got to an answer was from ChatGPT, which suspects that Prime is pulling out the backend support for these formats in anticipation of adding a new 3rd tier, which they will be paywalled behind. But in the meantime, they are quietly pulling the functionality from titles without telling any of their employees or the customers THAT PAY for this fucking service.

Not sure if this is specific to Canada, anyone else experiencing this?

Can’t get Dolby atmos to work on new pc

I used to use a gaming pc but I bought a new gaming desktop pc and I used to use Dolby atmos with my Astro a40’s with the mixamp on my old pc so I tried to use it on my new pc and Dolby access doesn’t detect my headset and I’m stuck on the page saying to try the free trial or buy the subscription. I have tried to do firmware updates through Astro command centre but it won’t update and is stuck at 0% but I plugged my mixamp and headset into my old pc and it all still works perfectly fine so I don’t think the firmware part is a problem. I checked the audio drivers and they both match the same versions but on the new pc I only have the option for windows sonic Spatial Audio and on my old pc there’s an option for Dolby. I have tried a few other things that chatGPT told me to try but so far nothing has worked and now it’s telling me to do stuff on powershell and just thought I’d ask here before I tried anything else.

Devil May Cry 2 Atmos height clipping

Anyone else notice some clipping on Atmos speakers for season 2? All the other channels were fine. I tested out a couple other shows and movies and it seems to be specifically the new season.

I only noticed because music was playing through my Atmos speakers and that's when the clipping was happening. I even tested some other apps and didn't have this issue. Could be it resolves itself as more time passes, but figured I'd post this in case anyone else runs into this issue.

Project Hail Mary in Dolby?

One of my biggest regrets in life will be that I watched PHM in regular because I didn't think I'd love it THAT much. I so wish I watched it in IMAX when it was playing so I can truly experience the best of it, but now that it stopped, I want to rewatch it in any other format available (which I've NEVER had the urge for before), which is Dolby Atmos.

So my question is: will Dolby Atmos be good for this movie? What's important to me are the visuals but I'm no connoisseur. I know it'll be better than regular and IMAX will not be back but I don't want to spend the money to rewatch it unless it's worth it.

I heard that DA is known for the sound quality and contrast but I'm not sure about anything else. Thank you all in advance!

Dolby Atmos for headphones in video games

Does dolby atmos for headphones map the metadata into 7.1.4 channels and then virtualizes it or does it use the metadata itself to create a true 3d audio space?
So when a game supports spatial audio, does that mean that it sends the metadata to dolby atmos for headphones as is and then it virtualizes it, or are channels created anywhere in the pipeline? I'm a bit confused on that?

Looking for testers with a Dolby Vision TV

Hey guys!

I am currently testing my app „Sodalite“. A native apple TV Jellyfin Client with Seerr Integration.

I am looking for active testers to test the dolby vision funcionality because i dont have a dv capable tv at home.

You would also need to send me photos or screenshots from the on screen logs to help me fix the dolby vision part of the player.

The App is using „AetherEngine“ as the video/audio backend, which i also made for this project.
