What is Monsters University's message regarding Sulley?

We all know what the message of the film is regarding Mike, but I’m curious what do you think it’s the message regarding sulley and how does it compare with Mike?

Why do people refer to blockbuster films in a derogatory way?

So I’m wondering why do people usually undervalue these kind of films? I know part of the answer which I agree with is that sometimes these films are too formulaic/generic, very heavy on cgi elements and focus on being successful movies rather than focusing on good storytelling and filmmaking. Of course im not saying all blockbusters are like this because I know they aren’t, but I also know that there are some pretty bad movies like that as well.

My question here is, there are a lot of films that technically would be considered blockbusters but aren’t any of the things I mentioned before. Let’s say for example: Obsession, this film was made with a very low budget but is now one of the highest grossing films with over 200 million dollars worldwide. So by definition this would be a blockbuster even if it didn’t cost millions to make it.

Another concern I have is, if obsession is considered a blockbuster do I mainly enjoy blockbusters? I’m gonna be honest, I haven’t watched a lot of international or indie films, I’ve watched some of them which I really liked, but I’ve seen others which have been highly praised and I just didn’t love them. Most of the time when I go to the cinema I watch like the main releases, and they’re always a mixed bag, I’ve seen some really good films and I’ve seen some awful films. This year I watched some horror films, I don’t know if all of them are supposed to be blockbusters but let’s say there are, maybe I’m wrong but for example: I loved The Bone Temple, likewise I loved last year’s 28 years later. But this year I also saw Lee Cronin’s The Mummy which I found to be awful.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but some of the films which are considered to be the best films of all time could be considered blockbusters? The Godfather, Aliens, Lord of the Rings, Oppenheimer, etc.

So if someone could please help me understand more about this, if a movie isn’t necessarily made with a millionaire budget, but it’s still pretty good and a lot of people go and see it and earns a lot of money is it a blockbuster?

Which films that aren’t considered blockbusters would you recommend me (from any kind of genre and decade) for expanding my horizons. (Do A24 films count?)

Also as I mentioned, most of the time I see the main releases on theaters because I don’t know which other films that are playing may be good, and when I here about one like that it’s mostly by the end of the year when the awards season is coming up and they release all of those previously unreleased films in the cinema in my country.

Thanks!

How good are the 2010 Arcadia remasters?

Are the remasters good? Or do you prefer the original? From the very little stuff I’ve heard I think that the bass is punchier.

AI in filmmaking

I know this is an over discussed topic but I wanted to ask about this, so I was chatting with someone about a short film I’m going to make and I mentioned I wanted to add some blood effects like practical stuff, but this person suggested to use AI to create a blood effect, this isn’t what I’m going to do, but this person suggested to tell the AI to create blood dripping down the wall, I told him that no thank you that I didn’t consider that to have any artistic merit, I’m also not planning to use any vfx, I’m not a vfx artist or anything and I don’t have any vfx artists at my disposal. And if I were to use vfx I wouldn’t use them in something that could be achieved practically.

He argued that it’s ok and that I’m not replacing anyone that it’s just a tool, and told me that nowadays all vfx artists use ai and that’s why premiere and specific programs like that have ai tools and that I shouldn’t be so square, that nowadays people love repeating that ai is bad and stuff like that, and I’m not saying ai is entirely bad, I know some artist may use it for processes like rotoscoping, etc. but I think that if I’m making a small personal short film I shouldn’t add stuff created by ai, I don’t think it has artistic merit as I mentioned.

Another argument he used was that nowadays a lot of ai is used to help F1 pilots to navigate, or for certain data stuff in other areas, and I agree technology is always moving forward, and specially ai who is taking the place of numerous jobs. Now I don’t know a lot about ai, but talking strictly about filmmaking I don’t think it has any merit, he also mentioned that an ai could do the storyboards more efficiently.

Another thing that I would like to mention is that this person was telling me a film is only 40% human work that the other stuff is made with programs and the editing is Mary with computers and it’s not like before which was made hand made with the negatives. That before the lighting was done with an exposure meter and that today that can be easily achieved with modern lightning that you can easily set the temperature, but that’s only technological advancement it’s not an ai doing stuff, any ways I just wanted to ask you what y’all think. Should I learn more about ai to learn how to adapt if I want to work as a filmmaker, how could ai help us filmmakers? As I said I do t know a lot about ai, and I hate to be that kind of guy who doesn’t know about a topic and it’s only yapping nonsense but this is my posture. And I would like to learn some more. Thanks!

Copyrighted music as temp music?

Hi there! So I’m planning on shooting a short film for personal purposes and viewing. I’m not planning on submitting it to any festivals or make any profit out of it, the thing here is that im planning to use a lot of copyrighted songs and score tracks. As I said I’m not planning on making any profit or anything. I don’t have the money to pay for the licenses or hire a composer. My question is that if I wanted to share the short film here on Reddit with a link or something for feedback purposes, could there be any issues regarding this? Could it be treated as temp music?
Also I’m not planning on uploading it to YouTube or anything but if I were to change my mind, I think YouTube would just demonetize my video. As I said I would like some feedback on the short film already with the tracks, and maybe show it to someone in the future as some of my previous work or something like that. Any help would be appreciated!

First short films not being that good?

So today 3 years ago on this day I presented a short film I made for a school project with some classmates, the short film was inspired by the Halloween franchise. I wrote, directed and edited myself, it wasn’t supposed to be anything big or special when the teacher assigned the project, but in my case I got super excited and proposed myself to write, direct and edit it, we shot for about 2 months or something, at my school and at my classmate’s house. We constantly had a lot of timing pressure because of the deadline and not everyone was available to shoot on the same day. When we finally presented there were 3 teams, the other 2 teams didn’t care at all about the project and each of them, did like a 2 minutes video.

As I mentioned I got very excited from the get go because I’ve always wanted to do a Halloween short film, so our short film was 20 minutes long, you could tell it was by far the one with the most effort. It had an extremely low budget, when I say extremely low I mean extremely low, like 60 dollars or something. But I remember doing it with a lot of passion, dedication, effort and enthusiasm, trying to do a lot of cool shots, references to the movies, etc. when we screened it everyone loved it.
The movie had its flaws, the screenplay wasn’t perfect, the audio wasn’t the best, the lighting wasn’t perfect as well, the performances, etc. maybe I should’ve made it simpler, but you could tell there was effort in it.

In the last years I’ve found that some of the classmates which made the movie with me still watch it and show it to friends. So I always thought of it as a good sign. I mean if it was straight bad they wouldn’t bother to rewatch it. As many of filmmakers may know and probably have experienced, we sometimes cringe at our past work, and sometimes when I haven’t seen it in a while I remember it worse than it actually was, and when I rewatch it I sometimes surprise myself with somethings that in my opinion turned out very good in comparison of how I remembered it.

Anyway, today I was thinking about it and I remembered that one episode of the office where Michael Scott makes his short film which is so bad that its good, and it got me thinking if the short film I made was like that, when me and my classmates rewatched it we were constantly laughing at how cringey some performances are and how some sequences turned out, (I want to clarify that none of my classmates were actors except for the lead, many of them obviously didn’t want to do it so obviously they weren’t going to deliver top notch, performances but there was some effort put, by some people) so I don’t know if my short film would classify in just a good indie very low budget film or a short film that it’s so bad that it’s good.

As of today I feel very proud of how it turned out and I know I put a lot of effort into it., although I know it isn’t perfect any means. So I wanted to ask if anyone has ever felt this way? How did you get better at making films? That was the last live action short film I made, I’ve made stop motions after that, and as of today I’m always shooting landscapes, some friends walking around them, etc. I’m always trying to improve my knowledge and my filmmaking skills.

Right now im about to begin to write an evil dead inspired short film starring my little brother, which I’m hoping it I’ll be less complicated because it’s just him as an actor and we’re filming it at my house in a more controlled environment and without any pressure of any deadlines. And I suppose my skills have improved in a way. What are your thoughts? Sorry for the long post, thanks!

Hello there! So I’m planning on shooting a short film on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, recently I discovered the black magic cam app which is great so far, I discovered that you can shoot in Apple Log - HDR, the only thing here is that I don’t know absolutely nothing at all about color correction or grading, so I don’t know if I should just shoot it on Rec.2020 - HDR (which I believe it’s the regular hdr the iPhone uses. My concern is if I do decide to shoot in Log and then figure out how to correct it later, i might regret it and turns out looking like crap, lifeless, dull, etc. The app also has something called LUTs, if someone could please explain to me what are those for. To add to my case I don’t even know in which program I can color grade/correct. So what should I do? Also I don’t know if this helps, I don’t have any crew I’m doing everything by myself, directing, cinematography and editing. Any advice is much appreciated thank you!
