Edmonton to Vancouver Road trip!

Hello everyone,

This post is pretty much for those in the interior, and specifically those in the Valemount area. I’m planning a road trip, leaving tomorrow morning from Edmonton to the Vancouver Area in my RWD M3. Valemount Supercharger currently showing “Temporarily Closure” and that will considerably change my charging plan. Basically I’m curious if anyone has been by recently (last couple of days) to see why this closure has been in place? There doesn’t seem to be any solid info anywhere other than there MAY be SOME stalls available and functioning. I guess either way I can rely on that location for a charge anyway until Tesla removed the closure not on it.

EV without home charging

I am looking at EV as my next vehicle. Only problem is I won't have access to home charging, how expensive is to charge outside, I heard it could be same as gas if using fast chargers.

Some Grizzl-E club questions

I was going to get a pair of Tesla wall chargers, home and cabin. But they recently raised the price so I poked around here on Reddit and saw all these mentions of Grizzl-E and the Club option. It seems too good to be true, so I'm doing my due diligence. I looked at the links I could find on the web site, but several questions remain:

  1. after the first charge, do I need wifi? The wifi at the cabin is... spotty, and turned off during the winter. Will anything at all not work?

  2. if the Club part ends, or the company goes bankrupt, does anything stop other than the payouts?

  3. am I missing anything, or is this as good a deal as it sounds?

And then one hardware question:

a) Is there any reason to pick a 40A over the 48A model? Size? Shape? Ease of installation? Anything?

In both locations, the panel is less than 6 feet from the charger location and the existing wire is #6 so I have tonnes of headroom. I can go to a 60A breaker, although both have 50A now (and my car is 32, so no need for anything bigger yet). So I can do the 48, is that a no-brainer? And I'm curious why they even have the 40, so maybe I'm missing something.

All-In Cost of Level 2 Charger Install (Ontario)

Hi all,

How much did your EV charger install cost all-in?

Living in Ontario.

My situation: Install only, already own the charger. No panel upgrade required. Panel is located within about 5-10m of install location. Thinking hardwired.

Thank you.

Plug in Charger upto 50A vs Panel upgrade to 200A

My electrician has suggested to use a plugin charger vs a wall charger and he can upgrade to 50A vs the whole.panel upgrade. Which plugin charger do you recommend? The mobile connector from Tesla ?

How do charging stations control EVs that don't leave once charged

Suppose an EV owner plugs in and then goes to a movie. Car is fully charged well before movie ends. . I see FLO chargers at our train station. I sometimes wondered if owners plug in and then head off to Toronto for the day?

Some chargers charge by the hour. Others by KWh. Presumably they must continue to charge a fee even although no energy is being transfered?

Cost per hour, kWH and idle time should be posted similar to gas stations. Mind you, I think cost might be hih if you decided to park and lock your ICE car next to gas station pumps ;)

Cannot reconnect Pion charger to the Internet

Moved the charger to another plug in garage, now cannot reconnect at all. Tried unbinding, and rebinding, tried resetting the network, I reset my own network. Connected with Bluetooth first then connecting to network, cannot pick up network. Tried using QR code to rebind. Doesn't work.

Tried unplugging and plugging back in, doesn't work.

Nothing is working. Anyone else faced this issue? Looking for some help here.

Charging costs for on street chargers

I’m considering an EV. I live in Toronto with off street parking (in an alley) with no way to charge at home.

I’m seeing on street chargers in my neighbourhood (High park/Junction)

Would love to know your feedback on reliability, speed, and approx cost for level 2 charging.

FLO
Ivy
Electrify Canada - heard bad reviews of them
Green P
Tesla- for non-Tesla EVs

Considering Genesis G60 or Polestar 2, used.

Spreadsheet for Charging Costs

Has anyone created a spreadsheet to determine their charing costs when at home charging? Thinking of creating a basic sheet that will take into consideration: Battery Size, Percent I want to charge, and Charging efficiency. From those inputs will spit out a dollar value based on my off-peak, mid-peak and on-peak power rates.

Wondering if anyone here has done similar? I have looked online and seen some much more complicated spreadsheets trying to capture all charges, etc. I'm just trying to figure out estimates of what the cost will be to charge to a particular level based on time of day and see what the outputs look like.

No clue what the costs to charge say 60% in my area would be.

What would you like to see in this Subreddit and how do you envision organizing the content?

With the amount of reward programs that have popped up since this subreddit was started, we're thinking it could use some improved organization. We're asking users to provide your input of what you would like to see and makes sense!

In both a consistent layout of the detailed posts for the individual programs, and a directory and/or summary/comparison the programs together.

Also other stuff besides reward programs, such as common questions or Code information.

Reward Program Posts

For program posts, potential sections of:

  • Reward rate
  • payout terms
  • minimum usage
  • other qualifications such a province
  • Chargers – whether provided, with details
  • or eligible/ineligible options
  • App functionality
  • Possible provincial rebates
  • Terms worth noting
  • Current sales/promotions

Advice on choosing a reward program

We're thinking of encouraging that users can make posts (or a Megathread) asking for personalized, factual advice/recommendations of reward programs according to their situation. It would involve a list of standard questions such as:

  • Province?
  • How much charging do you do per month? (or alternative what vehicle and distance driven)
  • Do you prefer NACS or J1772?
  • Require a minimum cord length?
  • What is your electrical setup?
  • Have you confirmed for sure if your electrical service has capacity?
  • (e.g. already have a receptacle for level 2, or needs to be hard wired, needs to be derated current for service capacity, or need a load management system)
  • Is a provided (free) charger a must, or would you like to own the charger?

There is so much nuances, pros and cons to the various programs, that it’s difficult to give a one-size-fits-all or automated solution (such as AI), and that I do believe full human response is ultimately best.

Tools

Are users interested in some forms of calculators? I have made graphs in the past, but there are so many programs now, with somewhat inconsistent ways they go about it... that it’d get messy.

For example even a basic spreadsheet that calculates how much charging (kWh) that certain driving would require, and also translate that into what the rewards would be for each program.

Or to estimate how long it would take to charge with a certain charge current.

Or to estimate the cost of electricity to charge.

Please let us know your suggestions!

Advice on charger + rewards plans

Hi all,

I've done pretty extensive research on chargers and rewards plans, but I'm not closer to being able to make a decision!

My main thing is that I'd like to have a charger that I own and that will happily work without a rewards plan (as we know those won't last forever), which also means that the services that comes with it are good out of the box. If I was to for example select ChargeLabs, and ChargeLabs rewards go away, I want to be able to return to my OEM services / software / cloud infrastructure / etc. and happily keep going, and for those services to be good to high quality.

Finally, the experience and ease of use matters, this is where I stumble. If you look at the Google Play Store for some of the key apps like SWTCH or ChargeLabs, the reviews are abysmal. I was thinking SWTCH, as you do end up owning it, but the app experience looks pretty poor, even for a relatively dumb charger, I don't want to have to purchase an iphone just to get the SWTCH app working.

Some of the rewards only organisations seem like fairly fly-by-night things, with just one or two employees, hardly confidence inspiring. The Chargy reviews only talk about Kelly for example.

ChargePoint has a great sale on their Home Flex though I see conflicting messages on its OCPP support. Although ChargeLabs does claim they support it (presumably with direct API support instead of OCPP?). The ChargePoint Home Flex looks like a good product by itself, with a sizeable company and network behind it, so when the rewards disappear, I still have that. But ChargeLabs currently pays out in gift cards, though they claim cash rewards are coming soon.

SWTCH is primarily a commercial provider it appears, though I guess their rewards program is growing rapidly, but the charger is dumb (or at least the app?). The support experience appears questionable, at least according to Google Play reviews. The charger does support OCPP, so you can use other backends (any OCPP CSMS, or on-prem servers even).

Can anyone recommend a combo that might satisfy my requirements? Right now I keep defaulting back to SWTCH, and I can hope the experience will be ok ... thanks!

Flo Notification

I have only used Flo once while trying to figure out how to use it with our new Chevy Bolt.

Tonight, with our car parked in our garage, I received a notification from Flo showing that charging was taking place. It was live and showed the kwh added increasing.

Obviously not our car being charged. Has anyone else had this experience?

I did take a screenshot and sent it to Flo.

Level 2 Charging Costs at Vancouver Condos

Hey there,

Wondering how much are you paying for Level 2 Charging in Vancouver/BC condos?

Our Oakridge condo has hypercharge charging at 0.30/kwh which is same as supercharging costs. Doesn't make sense to spend same for slower charging.

Would appreciate your insights.

Anyone else unable to cash out Grizzl-E earnings today?

For the past few days, I haven't been able to withdraw my Grizzl-E earnings. I was able to get 2 cash out since my subscription but now every time I try, I get the following error:

>

The strange thing is that:

  • I changed the email linked to my bank account.
  • I made sure Interac Autodeposit is enabled.
  • I even tried multiple different email addresses that all have Autodeposit enabled.
  • Same error every single time.

At this point, I'm wondering if this is actually a Grizzl-E issue rather than an Interac issue.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Or... has the rewards program quietly come to an end?

Thanks!

EDIT : Immediately after posting this on Reddit, it seems to be working again. Thanks everyone for your replies! 😅
