How are you guys keeping your e-bikes safe?

As more people start using e-bikes for commuting and everyday rides, theft has become one of the biggest concerns for riders.

Many people spend a lot of time choosing the right bike, but protecting it after purchase is just as important.

A good security setup usually comes down to a few things:

đź”’ A reliable lock

A quality U-lock or heavy-duty chain is still the foundation of e-bike security. Cable locks are convenient, but they should not be the only protection for a valuable e-bike.

📍 Tracking and smart security features

GPS tracking, movement alerts, and app-based security can add another layer of protection. They cannot replace a good lock, but they can help you keep track of your bike if something happens.

🅿️ Better parking habits

• Park somewhere visible and well-lit
• Lock the frame instead of only the wheel
• Avoid leaving your bike in the same location every day
• Take removable accessories with you

Some newer smart e-bikes, including Urtopia models, are starting to integrate features like GPS tracking and alarms directly into the bike instead of relying only on third-party devices.

Curious what everyone here does:

What is your e-bike security setup? One lock, two locks, GPS tracker, or something else?

How has your ebike impacted your finances to the good/bad?

I am not the normal ebike owner. I was a bike messenger for 8 years way back. Never stopped riding and commuted to work year round in NYC for over 20 years. I started ebike ownership with a bullitt cargo bike. It changed my life in Brooklyn. It even added $30k a year during/after the pandemic for 3 years delivering beer for a brewery.

Moved to San Diego in 2023 and brought my bullitt with me. It is a perfect city for year round riding without any pain. It rains 2 weeks out of the year-maybe.

Recent gas prices have made the bullitt a conversation starter that never stops. My bullitt is heavily customized with parts and the conversion motor to the tune of $7k in estimated build costs. For getting around avoiding traffic and cheap battery charging as compared to $6-$7 for a gallon of gas, it pays for itself in costs and convenience.

It's fun to ride and makes every ride/errand fun. It's a true car replacement here in SoCal.

First ebike commute today.

Sold the car yesterday to Carvana. We are biking now in hot ass summer Florida. I have about 9.5 each way to work.
