I built a debate app for civility. Users wanted to be toxic.

So I’m obsessed with debate, I’ll be honest, and I’ve noticed, as I’m sure we all have, that discourse in recent years has gotten really toxic.

It’s either a dogpile, throwing insults, being condescending, I don’t need to rehash what I imagine we all already know.

I built an app where people could swipe on topics, get matched with someone who disagrees, and get a score on their civility. The idea was that if you’re always an asshole, your shitty civility score would follow you and no one would want to talk to you.

I added a feature in passing called toxic mode that did not judge your civility. Spew your venom, no holds barred.

That was the idea.

Every time I got an install on the app, every single user immediately jumped into toxic mode. Out of 100+ downloads, not a single person wanted to have a civil discussion. They wanted the messy version. The heated version. The version that felt more like a chaotic internet argument than a polite debate club.

So I stopped fighting it and built a lightweight browser version where you can just pick a topic and jump in:

https://thinklavender.com/ragebait

The goal is still to get people talking to people they disagree with. Maybe the first step is not making everyone perfectly civil. Maybe it is just getting them in the same room.

And if that room has to be a little toxic to get people through the door, so be it.

Would love feedback on the idea and whether this feels like something people would actually try.

Prerequisite Override for Physics?

I'm an incoming freshman, and I want to take physics 2211k this semester. I took the calculus AB (MATH 2211) exam and got a passing score of a 3, but GSU does not qualify it for calculus 1. I have a solid understanding of calculus and got a decent grade in the class as well. Is it possible I can speak with my advisor on orientation day to get the prerequisite requirement lifted so that I can take 2211k this semester?

What has been your experience with the dual camera proctor setup?

Hello,
I’m hoping some fellow students can chime in and share their experience with this dual camera requirement for remote class exams.

This was not an enforced GSU-wide policy for spring semester. Supposedly, this is a mandate and not teacher specific. Weird that they would not make a larger announcement via email. Let’s say they rolled it out for Summer:

I’m not normally this regarded but I’ll take responsibility for it.

After you scan the QR code, a browser opens up and says begin exam. In Firefox, there are no identifiable characteristics to determine if the camera needs to point via front or rear camera towards me and the desk.

  1. Rear camera facing desk
  2. Front camera facing desk
  3. In a wild effort: scanned QR code for browser then switched to camera to see myself. Bad idea, this ended up locking the phone, and since you can’t look away from the laptop camera, there is no in session corrections allowed.

Three weeks, three exams where the second camera has not worked successfully. I’ve been in communication with the PhD candidate the entire time trying to resolve this. Due to policy, my grade was flipped from a 95 to 0.

Outside of going to campus to take the exam, please send any recommendations or suggestions my way. I’d also be interested in knowing how to navigate appealing the 0.

Thank you very much.

UGA vs. GSU: Grad School

Hi! I’m an incoming grad student moving back to GA from NYC and I’m trying to choose between GSU’s Moving Images MA or UGA’s Mass Media Studies MA. I attended UGA for undergrad and absolutely loved my experience there (graduated 2020), and I’ve taken a few classes at GSU during undergrad as well. Essentially I’m trying not to let my bias for UGA cloud my judgment when selecting grad school programs, but what most important to me is academic rigor, faculty/staff support and a diverse student body that’s equally as dedicated to the disciplinary craft. Would love to hear any thoughts on the programs/experiences from others!

Roommate Backed Out Last Minute

I am an incoming student at GSU. My roommate told me that she would be commuting instead of staying on campus, but we already selected our dorms. So would this mean I get the dorm to myself or would somebody else accompany it that’s on the waitlist?

Price to park

Literally whyyyyy is parking 400 a semester. I’m living on campus and I need my car to get to work and back home. I refuse to use Marta. But 400 is a bit insane. Like actually.

People who registered for housing late, please give me hope 😭

Has there been anybody (likely a freshman like me) who registered for dorm housing during June or late May and got anything, because I registered like June 10th. I don't even have a room selection date or waitlist number. Am I cooked? 😭

GSU to Georgia Tech Business transfer question

I’m currently a freshman at Georgia State University, taking summer classes, and I’m planning to transfer to Georgia Tech for the Fall 2027 semester as a Business Administration major.
I’m a little confused about the transfer course requirements. Is Calculus II (MATH 2212 at GSU) required for admission to the Business major, or is Calculus I enough?
If anyone has transferred into Georgia Tech Business from GSU, I’d really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Letter of Recommendation

Guys am I cooked? I changed my major from biology to nursing last fall semester and I’m trying to apply for the spring sem of the nursing program in 2027. Because I spent my first two years as a bio major I never really interacted with my professors a lot except for my micro bio prof. And I emailed her for a letter of recommendation and she hasn’t responded it’s been a week. 🫩

Chem 1211 and Physics 2211 Info

Hi there,

I was just wondering if anybody had any advice/course materials for these two courses. I am super scared to take them this semester and really need to get As in these classes. How long did you have to study for each course? Does having previous background in the material help?

Also, does anyone have experience with professor talwinder singh for phys 2211/prof. doyle barrow for chem 1211? I was debating between Mr. barrow or Dr. Ahuja for chem. Please let me know if one is better than the other.

Thank you!
