Received the Globular Cluster GPGXR knuckle grips

Good evening!

Thomas over at Globular Cluster reached out to me a little while back asking me if I was interested in checking out their new grips for the Galaxy XR. Given the really good experiences I’ve had with the the majority of their products in the past and their excellent customer service, it was an easy yes.

No money changed hands and this isn’t sponsored or anything. They just sent me a pair of the grips, asked me to give them some feedback, and to share my experience with the community.

I didn’t receive retail packaging, so I can’t speak to that and also didn’t receive instructions which lead to a little confusion that I’ll explain in a second. The straps themselves are two plastic pieces molded very well to snugly pressure fit to the controllers. You slide them on and then rotate until they’re sitting flush against the body of the controller. The most difficult part of the process is that the soft fabric straps that go around your knuckles have little loops that thread through the wrist strap attachment on the bottom of the controllers. The GC straps came with little plastic loops attached to the thin loop section at the bottom of the straps. I didn’t realize what the plastic was for and immediately snapped it off both straps. That was a mistake. The plastic loops are supposed to be used to thread the strap loop through the wrist strap attachment. Without the plastic or some other tiny tool like a bent paper clip, it’s about impossible to get them on there. Thankfully I didn’t throw away the plastic and was able to twist it together and thread the strap through. Once everything was put together on both sides, I was impressed with how comfortable the GC controller grips are. The plastic sections that slip onto the controllers fit so snugly that they essentially disappear in your hand and the fabric straps are super soft and adjustable with Velcro. If you’ve been wanting some professional grips for a really fair price, these are a definite recommendation.

Globular Cluster’s website will allow you to order, but says they’re out of stock. I’d keep an eye on the link below if you’re interested to see when they come in stock. I like these a lot better than the wrist straps that come in the box.

Galaxy XR £1,200. Should I get it?

Hi everyone. The Galaxy XR is finally coming to the UK and thanks to the different discounts for affiliates, etc I could grab it for £1,200 plus controllers. My question is: should I?

I currently own a Quest 3 with the Bobo VR strap and it is great but I love the idea of having Android in XR and all the possibilities that open. I have an appointment to try the Galaxy XR this morning so I will get to see the screens, etc.

My doubt comes because I cannot find much about this device in the internet, most YouTube videos are from October / November last year and then it seems that both the device and the OS have disappeared, they release an update a couple of months ago but that's it. I am used to the almost monthly updates that Meta releases. Do you guys think that all the hand tracking and eye tracking issues will be fixed? Will they keep improving the OS and releasing new upgrades like Apple seems to be doing with the AVP? It seems like a dead project right now and it makes me wonder if it is not better to wait and see what Meta presents in September in relation to the project Phoenix.

On the other hand I guess that I could buy it for this price and sell it for the same money in the near future if I am not entirely happy.

Thanks for your advice.

UPDATE AFTER TRYING THE DEMO

So I went to try the headset yesterday. It was a short demo of approximately 25 minutes at the Samsung Store in Stratford (London).

The headset is light and I did not feel any disconfort during the demos, still it was a very short period of time and also I had to wear a soft mask for hygiene purposes so I obviously did not have any rash in my face.

The screens are insanely good, it was really mind-blowing, also reading text was way easier than in the Quest 3, still I wonder if prolonged reading time would cause eye strain but in the Quest 3 I get it almost instantly.

I have heard that hand tracking is clunky, I did not have that experience, yes sometimes you need a couple of attempts to pinch but the same happens in the Quest 3. Eye tracking is a different story, I don't think I would be able to use that method of input, at least not on the state it is now.

I am still thinking about it, my options are buying this one or wait and see how MEta Phoenix is, but if I decide to get the Samsung headset then I will have to pay full price. Decisions, decisions.

By the way, the Samsung staff member that guided me in the demo told me that they have an offer for people who book the demo: £1,400. I obviously declined it since I can get a better price online and his manager said he could go as low as £1,300. I leave it here just in case anyone here is interested. I have not seen this written in any official channel so the offer might be just available in the Samsung store in Stratford (the one in the Westfield shopping centre).

Galaxy XR Controller Grips - A great upgrade to go with my comfort mods.

Along with the comfort mods from Studioform Creative, Globular Cluster, and a battery counter balance, these move the GXR further into something that I can easily use all day!

Can’t wait to test the display fully as well as the face tracking for vr!

Looking for community input on GXRv as a stationary Multi Monitor productivity device

I've been eyeing the Immersive Visor for longer than I'd like to admit. Who knows if it will ever actually come out. But the big draw was 4k per eye, up to 5 or 6 monitors, 6dof, and it's very lightweight and not bulky looking. The GXR checks many of those boxes on paper at least, and while I'd prefer not having to wear a full headset, it's certainly a compromise I'm willing to make.

I run 3 monitors now if you count the laptop, and at times I'll run a second laptop as well. But I have a GPD Win Max 2 with an AI 9 HX370 with 64gb of RAM, it's more powerful than my work laptop but the screen is smaller so replacing my work laptop just for a desk setup will basically cost me half a monitor.

So, my main question really is this. For those who do, or have, used it in this scenario, how well does it perform? As a desk anchored multi monitor device that I can use for several hours at a time is it a purchase worth my consideration? Thank you all in advance!

PSVR2 to Galaxy XR for PCVR

So I just got a PSVR2 a few months back, paid $300 total to get it, the charge dock, the pc adapter, and the Globular Cluster mod and it all works, I have the right bluetooth and so the controllers don't desync. But The lenses are not my favorite and the rubber is annoying.

I was just given an offer to buy a Galaxy XR with controllers for $1250 and I'm heavily considering it.

My main use for it is VR Chat, Bigscreen for movies(what I have done the most of) and some pcvr games, I only have a few. I hate beatsaber and would never play it so that isn't really an issue and I don't have an interest "competitive" vr games either. I have a 165gz monitor and a 4090 for my serious gaming.

So in this use case, is it actually a good upgrade? The big thing holding me back is everyone saying the controllers are bad, but people say that about PSVR2 and that hasn't bothered me at all.
Battery life is another big thing though, I don't get how wireless can be better if you need to use extra battery packs or be plugged in anyway to get more than 2 hours, but the PSVR2 controllers last only 4 hours anyway so as long as I can get like 5 hours total I should be no better or worse in that regard.

I also wouldn't mind using it for 2D games, I did have fun using my PSVr2 as a screen to play Helldivers 2 at my desk for instance using my regular keyboard and mouse.

Access apps while in 3d environments?

I really would love to see the ability to open 2D apps like my wifi cameras, discord, and even android xr settings, while immersed in a 3D one like a game or virtual desktop. Meta created seamless multi tasking and that was super helpful. I am a bit surprised it isn't something GXR offers (yet hopefully). It would also be nice for a keyboard passthrough portal in 3D apps.

Samsung announces new XR microdisplay production base in $48B investment

Samsung Display is constructing a new production base for XR microdisplays and next-generation smartphone displays at its Asan campus, backed by a 67-trillion-won ($48 billion) investment. In a June 29 press release, Samsung highlighted these microdisplays as a core component for upcoming AR, VR, and MR devices, noting that immersive hardware will see full-scale growth alongside the AI era.

According to supply chain analysts, this investment aligns with Samsung's plans to scale up the Direct-patterned RGB Micro-OLED technology it acquired from eMagin for the consumer market. Industry monitors note that Samsung is currently finalizing equipment orders for the new lines, which are scheduled to be installed in 2027, with mass production expected to begin in 2028.

4K USB-C video input?

I've seen a few threads discussing FHD input, but I'm hoping people can confirm the GXR is capable of receiving 4K USB-C video input via a 4K capture card (ETA: not just receiving, but playing 4K too).

Source > HDMI/USB-C cable > 4K Capture Card > GXR > Noir Lite app (or ?)

If this is working for you, please share which capture card you're using and if there's any perceivable lag.

Thanks!

Project Hail Mary in 3D is a must see

If you want to see how well micro-oled works in black space, this is the movie. Everything shot up close in 3D looks very lifelike and when the volume of light cast shadows on the dark environment, it feels like a real image.

GXR 2 design idea. Xreal Aura puck + Pimax dream air sized headset

GXR 2 design idea. I was excited to see the Xreal Aura processor puck because that means it's very possible to to have an android XR VR headset like the GXR but much smaller like the Pimax Dream air slam. The reason the GXR is larger is because it has processor and cooling in the headset. It would be cool is Samsung went with a design like that for GXR successor. With the right light weight halo strap and no light seal, it could feel like wearing sunglasses. The puck would have to be much larger to power the bigger displays than in the xreal aura. Im curious what some of your thoughts are on this.

Galaxy XR passthrough new user

I received my Galaxy XR a couple days ago and have only had a couple hours to explore it. Also this is my first VR headset so I am still trying to understand what is normal behavior and what is expected. Overall everything seems to be working very good with everything showing up on the screens very crisp and clear.

At first I thought the passthrough was good but then I looked down at my phone in my hands and found I can't read anything on the screen. I knew the passthrough wasn't perfect and wasn't expecting to be able to read things from a distance but thought I would at least be able to make out text of things I am holding in my hands. Also I started noticing some artifacts manifest as split seconds of white streaks. This only happens in passthrough.

What should I be expecting from the passthrough quality? Has anyone else experienced things like this? Is it possible the device has some sort of damage? Also I should add I am still trying to figure out good and proper fitment on my head, so maybe I just need to position it better?

Possible to tilt view up in immersive view to watch lying down?

I haven't found a way to do this. I'm speaking about having the center of the view be pointed at the ceiling. No app nor browser seems like it can do this on this headset. The center of the view remains pointed at a wall, so it is not possible to watch in immersive view lying down. With flat 2D windows, you can recenter to the ceiling by tapping on the side strap, but this does not work in immersive view...the center won't move up. There's a simple setting on the Quest 3 to enable "use apps while lying down" (I think it's called that) that enables this. I tried "travel mode" just to see if it lets me do it but it seems to have no effect.

Also I cannot wear this thing standing or sitting. It's too imbalanced for my head.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I also tried the Spatial Film Player app but it crashes when I open it, so 🤷

Performance drop to 72Hz and overheating warnings on GXR via Virtual Desktop—is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I've been running into a persistent issue while playing PCVR games using Virtual Desktop on my GXR.

Even after lowering the resolution setting 'Monster' to 'Godlike', I can't play smoothly at 90fps for more than 30min. However, after that mark, the frame rate consistently drops down to 72fps. Along with the performance dip, I occasionally get an overheating warning message on the screen.

Is anyone else experiencing this thermal throttling and frame rate drop on their GXR, or is it possible that I just have a defective unit?

Any insights or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Galaxy XR vs Quest Pro vs Quest 3 - Micro-OLED vs Mini-LED vs LCD (Through The Lens)

I recently put together a direct through-the-lens comparison between the Samsung Galaxy XR, Quest Pro and Quest 3, focusing primarily to display technologies rather than the headsets themselves.

• Galaxy XR = Micro-OLED

• Quest Pro = Mini-LED

• Quest 3 = LCD

All footage was recorded through the lenses using a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra with no AI enhancement, sharpening, colour correction or post-processing applied.

SteamVR resolution was set identically across all three headsets (3460 × 3708 per eye) to keep the comparison as fair as possible.

One thing I found particularly interesting is that the increase in perceived detail isn't just about resolution. Most people naturally expect higher resolution to be the biggest factor, but after spending time with all three displays I found contrast and black levels often have just as much impact on how much detail you can actually see.

In my experience, the Galaxy XR's Micro-OLED display produces the deepest blacks, strongest contrast and most convincing sense of depth. The Quest Pro's Mini-LED display still holds up remarkably well and gets closer to Micro-OLED than many people might expect, while the Quest 3 remains impressive for it's price but has very noticeably weaker black levels and colour depth.

Curious to hear what other Galaxy XR owners think after using Micro-OLED compared to LCD or Mini-LED headsets?

Samsung is committed to XR in the long run, they're building a Micro Oled fab

https://youtu.be/SNs_n3V66IU?si=RUJqORtzvfXZa4wA&t=3022

So, this whole video is pretty interesting but for sake of our conversation just skip to the last 4 minutes but we talk about what does the future of the GXR look like and maybe some positive news is that given that Samsung is apparently investing a lot in XR related R&D AND manufacturing, even if future products don't look like the Galaxy XR, Samsung is still committed to this space as a whole or else they wouldn't be spending hundreds of millions of dollars building a fab just to make micro oled panels.

Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, if they just make some more firmware updates to improve the tracking, give us customizable playspace boundaries, and options for getting around the current thermal throttling, I'll be satisfied with the GXR for years to come.

Happy weekend.
