I Got a legacy Dell PowerEdge R300 sitting around. What absurd/fun project should I use it for?

Hey everyone!

I've got a classic Dell PowerEdge R300 taking up space in the lab. Before I turn it into a high-tech space heater for the upcoming winter, I want to give it one last glorious job.

What’s the most ridiculous, fun, or unexpectedly useful thing I should host on this piece of history?

Hit me with your best (or worst) ideas!

How to make my homelab safe while hosting game servers?

tiple LXCs with multiple self hosted services. One of them is pterodactyl hosting multiple games in isolated dockers, each game has its game port forwarded on my router so people can join.

I want to have the most secure setup for my situation.
Any suggestions ?

Please try to explain in details since am a beginner and having hard time to understand this stuff.

Btw: I tried to enable proxmox firewall on the cluster and i keep losing connection to my services and even with Ai couldn’t fix the problem for hours and hours so I just turned it off again.

Also i router cant support vlans and I don’t have managed switch.

Setup:
3 proxmox nodes with thinkcentres i5 32 ram
Raspberrypi handling dns and npm
Ugreen nas.
All connected to an unmanaged switch to my router

I'm working on something to help you update (or install) servers

This project I'm working on can help you set up a brand new or existing VPS and have it ready for Minecraft hosting.

It can auto configure:

  • UFW ports
  • Caddyfile
  • systemd services
  • mod configs
  • Key only SSH (optional by providing a public key)

all if you install Geyser, Simple Voice Chat, BlueMap..etc with the tool.

Upgrading a server

  • Detects installed mods and updates them with your server (modrinth)

Works by simply pointing to a folder with Minecraft servers and then selecting an existing server.

Tool currently handles all MC versions from 1.20.1 to 26.2 (I could go lower) and has support for fabric, neoforge, forge, quilt and vanilla servers. Im hoping this project helps people get into more DIY server hosting or maybe save some money instead of giving it to dedicated MC hosts. The tool comes with hopefully clear instructions and guided selection screens. Still unsure? just click ok through the safe defaults.

If you are savvy enough, the tool can run headlessly, fully with arguments / flags. So you can automate server creation or updating with it.

(working on adding features for removing servers and also installing mods into existing servers)

My first own made server.

Hi everyone, I recently built my first home server using old parts from my PC.

Current Specs:

  • Motherboard: ASUS Prime B450M-K (Micro-ATX, 22.6 cm x 22.1 cm)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3300X
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4
  • PSU: 1stCOOL White Storm 450W
  • GPU: Temporary (only plugged in for OS installation, as the Ryzen 3300X has no iGPU)

(I know 8 GB RAM and this hardware might struggle with heavier workloads, but I plan to upgrade it over time!)

I need some advice on a few things:

  1. Linux Distro: I want a terminal-only / headless (CLI) distro. I plan to run a Minecraft server, websites, a second-brain system for Claude AI, and do some experimental hosting. I need high stability, low power consumption, and a large helpful community. Is Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS or Debian 12 CLI the best choice?
  2. Modular Case recommendation: My motherboard is Micro-ATX. I don't have a 3D printer for the next half a year. I'm looking for a cheap/budget modular case (like the Cooler Master Q300L) where I can easily rearrange panels, add/move drives, and customize components as I upgrade. Any recommendations?
  3. General advice: What general tips or improvements do you have for a beginner setting up a headless home server with these specs?

Thanks for any help!

Built a self-hosted game server hosting panel, would love some help testing it

Been building a self-hosted panel called Badger Panel for running game servers (Minecraft, Rust, GMod so far, more games planned). The panel itself runs on Docker, and the game servers it manages can be hosted as separate instances on Windows, Docker, or Kubernetes depending on your setup. It's also Pterodactyl egg compatible so if you're coming from that, it's not a rebuild.

Alongside the server side it also handles the operational stuff, billing, CRM, support tickets, white label, since I got tired of stitching those together separately.

It's in its final stages of testing. Most of it holds up well, some bits are still rough, and I'd rather know that from actual server admins than find out later.

If you run or admin game servers and fancy trying to break it and telling me what's wrong, drop a comment or message and I'll get you set up.

Dedicated server lag

Im running a dedicated server for me and 3 other friends but we're experiencing some weird lag, info as follows:

\- server pc is a lenovo legion laptop, 32gb ddr5, 12700H CPU.

\- Wired connection to the modem and decent internet connection overall.

\- server is a steam CMD one

\- we have around 15 mods installed, nothing major just small QOL stuff, nothing to change the map or zombies.

\- have tried toggling uPNP in the server setting with no changes.

\- everyone's ping is fine and connection to the server doesn't drop.

\- the lag only effects fast vehicles and players movement, characters seem to slide around and rubber band, no issue with interacting with items or fighting zombies.

Really not sure what else I can trouble shoot, I've played around with a few server settings but nothing seems to help.
