r/Gloomhaven

My digital Frosthaven experience so far (~10 scenarios in). No spoilers.

I just wanna say I've played the board game version, but didn't finished it canonically, mostly because of the outpost phase and all the things regarding the town. I dunno why, but it was just too much for us, so we house ruled things and ignored that part of the game. And while I don't regret anything, we still had huge fun, since at the end of the day, the game is still about doing scenarios with various characters and overcome the challenges with teamwork, I'm very happy this digital version exists, so I can experience the original game, so to say. I play with 2 characters: Boneshaper and Drifter. And it's huge fun, ngl. Digitally manage the town is amazing, I love the town phase, it's a fun mini-game. I play the game on veteran difficulty, which is the normal +0 one and not gonna lie, that's enough for me. I know playing solo should be at +1 difficulty, but I personally don't think knowing each other's initiative is as much of a help as +1 difficulty brings extra HP and power to the monsters. Maybe it's just me, but I find this veteran difficulty perfect.

So yeah, that all. In short: the game is super amazing and while the board game was too much for me, this digital version is PEAK. 😁👌

Variable player number

Thinking about starting to play with a group of friends. The problem is that it's a group where sessions can vary from 4-8 people and there will probably be 1 or 2 who are always available. In this scenario, I ask:

1- Is it possible to play with 8 people if necessary? Like playing in pairs or with more characters per scenario.

2- If there is a large turnover of people, does the game handle this scenario? Like, is it possible to redo missions with people who haven't done them, or do you think it's better to just move forward with weaker characters?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Should I play Buttons & Bugs solo or wait for JOTL with a friend, as an intro to GH games?

I want to get immersed into a campaign dungeon crawler game, and since last year I decided to get into GH. I have a friend very much into it that has the core game + JOTL, but has no one to play with. The idea is to play together, starting with JOTL, but he just moved to my city two months ago and couldn't bring the games yet. He will get them sometime this year, but it is unclear when (hopefully around summer?) and it is a bit of a waste to buy a second copy of JOTL to play with him.

My question is, as an intro to Gloomhaven, is it better to wait till we have JOTL to get started, or should I just start with Buttons & Bugs solo in the meantime? I did play a couple of scenarios with the digital version of GH but didn't like the brain burning sensation of playing two handed solo.

I originally thought of waiting while playing a different campaign game till then either solo or coop, thinking Oathsworn at the moment. But just noticed how cheap and quick to play Buttons & Bugs is (and true solo), which is now making me reconsider my plan.

Offensive Three spears mini guide

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-5Q-68DFNA37UCHZgEXQDHrp8AqV_fjmm2ASSHdUQrw/edit?usp=drivesdk

A mini-guide for what I think is the single strongest high level/high prosperity build in 2e. Can chew through a group of SL 7 monsters in a single turn.

As for this mini-guide format, I think it has potential. I feel that with 2e classes cards all being generally good, going over each and every ones of them is not that useful.

I feel this guide present a non-intuitive and different way to play QM, so I focus on that.

Question about 3 swords locked class.

Hi! 👋

I've finished Gloomhaven 2.0, and actually not only finished it, like the story, but have played almost all the other scenarios as well, the ones that were locked during the campaign. And it's true a few scenarios are missing, like 3-4, but I've never seen anything, that would unlock this class, so I thought I ask here how can you legally unlock it, because I'm curious. Illegally I unlocked it already and I've played Frosthaven's first scenario with it, haha. But I'm wondering what did I miss during the playthrough.

Oh, and since you're here reading this, tell me how you feel about the class as well, I liked it, a very interesting and unique summoning class, IMO.

Wrong solo scenarios

I am playing through our old box of Gloomhaven 1st ed. We just recently unlocked envelope X and I usually use a retailer in my country that is a small, online store for games. I went to their website and checked if they had the X-reward, as I have seen it previously and I saw while scrolling their Gloomhaven content that they had the Solo scenarios back in stock, and I have been after them for a while! So I bought them too. But after opening to play the music note scenario I realised that these are clearly updated for 2nd edition and there are mechanics in these scenarios that I know nothing about. Is there any easy fix to this, like maybe a pdf or something to see differences (I couldn’t find anything after a quick search online) or am I just going to have to try to return these?

Praise for Hail Mercenary Pack

I know a lot of people were disappointed at the cost of the mercenary packs and probably passed on picking them up, but let me take a second to sing the praises of Hail.

The designers nailed the theme with this character. The "Irritation" cards force you into really specific constraints such as "make sure you loot each turn", "end your turn 2 spaces away from others", "can't attack", etc. so that you can gain powerful Resolve tokens. I'm constantly feeling like I'm actually Hail, hanging out in a corner because I can't move, backtracking for coins, annoying people into attacking before or after me, and pestering people to enchant their cards so I can get gold. I've had several useless turns where I'm fiddling with things, followed by blasting two different enemies for 12 damage each.

The mechanics are also incredibly fun. Teleport is such a crazy way to move around the map and it feels great not caring about immobilize, traps or even walls. My favourite moment with teleport was when I skipped 12 spaces worth of movement by teleporting through a gap between the tiles. I had to literally lay out hexes on the table to make sure I was counting the distance correctly but it was hilarious seeing my teammates faces.

The character has excellent support abilities and I've been playing it primarily as such. I remember my teammates being super surprised that I had a heal 7 + safeguard or an AOE heal 2 at level 1. I knew from the moment I peeked at the level 3 "can't attack" Irritation card that I wanted to build around supporting and avoiding attacks, and I've had a lot of fun doing this.

The most enjoyable part of this character, however, has been working around the solo item that you get at level 5. For those that don't know, it's a pair of boots that are double-sided. On the one side you can trade an active Irritation card with one from your card pool, letting you switch your Irritations on the fly and gain extra Resolve tokens. On the other side, you can recharge it back to the original side by spending three Resolve tokens in one turn. Playing the dance of swapping Irritations to meet the condition you're currently in has been incredibly interesting and allowed for me to go aggressive or change for more mobility depending on what is needed. It really helps you play those big turns where you're getting huge value from your cards as well as tons of experience and prevents you from having dead turns where you're playing down Irritations (which I had tons of pre-level 5).

Hail has a huge skill ceiling and I'm still learning the class. But I've had so much fun charging up Trial and Success to huge levels (currently an attack 13 loss card), cheering when my teammates get hit with a "+1, gain a Resolve token" modifier, and shoving my allies into a pile of enemies with a free attack. This is probably my favourite class that I've played in GH1, FH, Jaws or GH2 so far and I'm excited to get even further with the class.

Road event in Guildmaster mode

So Im playing Guildmaster mode and encountered a road event :
At a crossroads you see an ornate wooden shrine, with a slot for passing travellers to make offerings of gold in the hope of receiving a blessing
I make large offering 50g
Game notes a potion atop the shrine, that was not there before. Party takes the potion

So my question is: do I get a potion after finishing mission, and what potion is it? 50 gold is a big sum for me, so I'd like to know the outcome, rather than replay a difficult mission

Is there a guide somewhere that describes all the choices and rewards for them?

Gloomhaven digital on PS5 for solo only?

I read some posts on the quality of Gloomhaven on consoles, specifically PS5, and noted mixed reviews. However it seems a lot of the complaints and issues are due to cross play.

I was thinking of buying the gold edition of this game on PS5 as it's currently on sale and I have been intrigued for a while. I play board games, but I don't have the time or space to constantly set this up or leave it on the table, and the big draw of the digital version for me is that it sidesteps that while also running the game and all its systems for you.

Is Gloomhaven digital worth it on PS5 if my intention is to play solo only (likely with two, maybe three characters)? Thanks!

Questions from newcomers.

EDIT: TY ALL!!!

Hello dear community!

We are new to Gloomhaven and I study a games rules excessively before we go further. We play in german so sorry for translationerrors. Im barbarian and shes the assassin.

  1. If I got this right, theoretically after Black Barrow, we can decide to go back to Gloomhaven, have a Pathevent and a Cityevent and another Pathevent then do the 2nd scenario

OR

We directly continue without pathevent because it is connected to the 1st scenario

OR

We do the bonus scenario from the chest, but need a pathevent first. And later another pathevent to continue the 2nd scenario.

  1. EXP and gold gained after the scenario: both are not shared. I collected 8 EXP, she collected 7 EXP, and we both gained 6 EXP from finishing the scenario. Now if we continue directly to Scenario 2 - what do we do with the EXP for now? Write it down somewhere (character sheet?) because we didnt go back to Gloomhaven? So we just collect it till we decide to go back to the city (which will be anyway after we do the 2nd one I assume).

  2. Since the goal in Black Barrow is to kill all ememies, it is wise to delay killing the final enemy to collect all loot because otherwise its lost. Could we theoretically do this to farm EXP a bit too? How beneficiary is all of this?

  3. See picture. Elite Archer has Move-1 and Attack+1. Where does she move and who does she attack? I assume since she cant move out of the disadvantage against me she will attack her.

  4. Also on Closecombat if we both are next to a skeleton, it will attack lowest Initiative first, correct? Likely assassin most of the time.

  5. If EliteArcher has the card Attack-1 and 2targets does she even move? I assume not.

  6. Does a ranged enemy move as far away as possible to attack or does she stand still if she can attack without disadvantage? I assume she moves away as far as she can, why would she want to stand just 2 tiles away when she could 4.

Thank you in advance!

Is 52 finished scenarios a small amount before finishing the campaign?

Last night my current group finished our 47th scenario, by my estimation we can finish in 4 more and have one scenario open that isn't necessary to finish, bringing us to 52, with no other optionals to do, and that wont change unless we unlock anything unexpected during those games, through chests and such. A previous campaign I did on the steam version finished with 61.

Deathwalker Hungry grasps top (lvl 7 card) on one target

Hi,

Today I played a scenario with new card for Deathwalker from Frosthaven - Hungry graps - and wasn't sure whether I can use it on one target in the following way:
- target one monster, attack 3 and pull it on the shadow from which I attacked
- attack from a different shadow in a range 2 from the first shadow, again on the same target and optionally pull it to that shadow.

All together, both attacks on the same target and it gets pulled by 4.

At the beginning of the turn the second shadow wasn't in the range 2. Is that a valid play? I guess it comes down to whether the card means attack "simultaneously" or in order.

This is the card:
