help me with my guinea pig
hi all guinea pig lovers, my female guinea pigs front toenail looks inflamed and has barely any nail. what would this be caused from and should i take her to the vet? i’ve never had any issues like this before. she has a cage with fleece bedding and doesn’t walk on any hard surfaces.
Etsy fleece hideout sellers
Looking for someone who can make a cozy fleece hideout (or possibly 2) with a specific fabric I have chosen. I was trying to find it as a premade hideout, but have only been able to find the fabric.
keep or rehome? Idk what to do 😭
Hey guys! So I’m in a bit of a predicament. We adopted 2 female guinea pigs in March… one of them was pregnant.
(We confirmed the other pig is also female so she didn’t get pregnant by her cage mate)
We now have 2 big females, 2 baby females… and this guy.
To be honest he is so chill and I love him. I want to keep him… but here are the problems I am facing.
1: I have 3 kids and a cat, so I keep all the pigs in my room where I can control the door being shut at all times.
My kids wouldn’t be as aware and I don’t expect them to be responsible for their safety.
2: I would have to separate him from all the females until he is spayed, which could be 6 months… and I don’t think it’s fair for him to be alone. Also putting a divider in the cage would limit space for everyone. I have a very very large cage. My husband is 6’2” 240lbs and can lay in there with them, so I’m not too worried about space but that’s still kind of an issue with territory and might cause fighting. Also he will be lonely and sad.
3: I have 5 guinea pigs now and I don’t know how it’s gonna be when they are full grown… if their space is going to feel crowded?
Does anyone have experience with keeping this many pigs in one room? Separating a male until they get neutered? Is this the best option for him?
Should I just re-home him? Should I keep him and get him neutered? I just want him to have a good life and I don’t know what the best choice is.
My guinea pigs gave Birth
Hi I’m Jay and my guinea pigs had babies luckily it’s 2 one boy one girl but what do I do in the meantime? My male guinea pig is desperate to pregnante my female one right after birth. He’s currently alone in the cage but I want to help him. Any advice?
My baby is sick 💔
Hey guys! Mousse has a respiratory infection. We took him in after hearing lots of congestion in his nose along with sneezing and another sound that I can try to link below. His eyes started to get crusty and very watery with a milky white looking film. He's still ate okay but his energy was very low and he became very agitated at the smallest touch. He also became bitey which was not like him also. He's on antibiotics and is doing better!
Gender??
Gender confirmation i posted earlier thinking one of my males might be female but I think they might both be females... can yall help me identify?
does this look like ringworm/infection or just irritation? vet opinions appreciated
i’ve had this guinea pig for about 3 weeks now, and he’s been living with my other guinea pig for around a week. i just noticed hair loss/crustiness around his eye today. he doesn’t seem super itchy and is acting/eating normal otherwise.
i’m obviously probably going to take him to the vet just to be safe, but i wanted to get opinions in the meantime from people who’ve dealt with this before. does this look more like ringworm, mites, another type of infection, or could it just be irritation/scratching from hay or the other guinea pig?
i’m stressing because i only recently introduced them and i’m worried about it spreading if it’s something contagious 😭
How do I know if male bonding is successful
We rescued a male Abyssinian (1.5yr old) from the animal shelter and a few days ago went to a guinea pig rescue and adopted another 4 month old Abyssinian male. We took them home and made a separate temporary 6x3 c&c enclosure to try and get a solid bond with them. When will we know they are bonded? They’ve had probably 3 small squabbles - no blood has been shed though. This will be our second day of having them in the enclosure during the day (we put a divider on at night) and just want to know when we would be good to leave them together full time/ move them into the actual guinea set up we have that’s a tiny bit smaller (think it’s 14 sq ft) any help or advice is appreciated as we are new to guinea pigs and boar bonding.
Potato had babies! He
You guys were right, streak must’ve been a boy and potato was pregnant, not bloated! She had these 4 perfect little babies! Steak was separated almost immediately after they were born into his own cage… there are 4 babies.. 3 boys and 1 girl… should i try to keep them all?? They have to be separated from mom around this weekend. I currently have 2 cage setups… 1 cage is 2x4… and 1 cage is 3x4… should I try and extended the 3x4 cage and then put a divider for the boys and do 2 and 2? Is 6 guinea pigs crazy to try and keep? I just love them so much! The parent are steak (boy) and potato (girl) and i named the 4 babies… truffle, butter, corn and chaos lol
Question??
I recently took in two guinea pigs that were supposedly both males (around 11 months old). After having them for about a month, I realized one is actually female, so they’ve now been separated and I’m officially on baby watch 😅
They’re currently in separate cages right next to each other so they can still see and hear one another. Since they were already bonded, I’m worried they might get lonely or depressed being separated. I’ve noticed some bar chewing since the split.
Has anyone dealt with this before? Do they usually adjust over time, or is there anything I can do to make the separation easier on them?
Boy?
Posting again… kinda sad cause he’s looking like a boy which means I can’t keep him 😭
Hello guinea owners
posting for new guinea pig owner who would like to know if this is a good home or if there is anything she could change or just general advise. thank you.
Elder Guinea Pig Sick (Need Support)
Hi, one of our male elder guinea pigs named Owlie (6.5-7yo) was brought in to an exotic NYC vet 2 weeks ago for an outbreak of lice (it seemed to blow up out of nowhere), and some right hind leg mobility issues. He was given a general check up, and provided treated w/ Revolution. An ear swab was also done and he was diagnosed with a yeast infection. He was given ear drops (Miconazole Nitrate) for that. During the exam, he may have had a seizure during some spot touches/scratches as well.
Since then, it looked like he was improving really well - squeaking again for treats, climbing the cage, running around better, and less active lice observed. He just had his 2nd Revolution treatment on 5/13/26.
This morning, almost a complete 180 - he is completely dragging the right leg, his left eye appears watery, and he is missing more hair on the left side of his body. His hind right toenails look off, and also has something growing or stuck to his hamstring* area. Luckily, he is still pooping well and eating normally… but how the hell can this happen?!
We’re bringing him to the vet again today and will probably do the works - but this is not what we were expecting. My wife and I have had guinea pigs in our lives since 2015. It is all fun and cute until this point and again now the most heartbreaking thing imaginable. I can’t handle this anymore. I’ve always hoped our pets/pigs are the lucky ones that live past general expectancy. Stupid.
I’ve attached photos for any feedback, support, and experiences you may have had that appear similar in this case. I hope this isn’t the end of the line for our little guy. 🤞
Need help - I think my Guinea pig inhaled something irritating
I was cleaning my guineas pigs pen and changing the fleece and whenever I do this I let her run around free. She normally loves to run all around and nothing has ever happened and I just wait for her to show up again. I didn’t even know she was in the same room as me but I heard a gurgling sound and I look at where the sound came from and she’s there and there’s a huge snot bubble coming out her nose and it’s dripping a ton. I’ve been holding her in my arms for the past hour and trying to wipe her nose off and she just has snot all over her face and around her mouth. I think she has some in her mouth too and I was trying to get it out by having her chew on a stick but she didn’t want to. I got some out with my fingers. I tried giving her some water in a syringe to flush some snot out but she wouldn’t drink it. My arm where her head was lying is covered in snot. She’s so tired of being messed with and I just want to help her. I don’t know what to do since it’s the middle of the night and there are no vets nearby that see Guinea pigs. In the morning I’m taking to another town to an exotics vet but does anyone know what I can do for her until then ?
She was acting completely fine and perfectly normal until I heard that noise. Whenever she runs around she likes to go under furniture so I wonder if she just found a very dusty place. My baby is 6 years old and I’m very worried, she’s never had a runny nose before so I don’t know how to help her feel better.
Hot weather with piggies
Hey guys,
How do you protect your piggies from the weather?
The forecast says 30 degrees Celsius/ 86 degrees Fahrenheit for end of this week and next week. We have two 15 week old piggies.
The enclosure is lined with fleece, they have two houses, they also get a big veggie plate 2 times a day and are currently on antibiotics and probiotics for a respiratory infection. (They are better now)
The enclosure stands on an outer wall in the living room and my living room has tiles which are naturally cold, so putting them in a cc cage directly on the ground would be a possibility.
Ivermectin guinea pigs
Hey guys, so I might be a little bit paranoid, but my guinea pigs have hay lice. And my boyfriend ordered horse ivermectin for them, so we could treat the hay lice topically. Every video i've watched and every one I have talked to has just said, put a pea sized amount on each ear and rub it in. But what I didn't realize was is that everybody else was using 1% ivermectin. We used 1.87% ivermectin. I realized this and we washed it off their ears. Can anybody tell me signs of overdose? We washed it off but im so scared now. Has anybody else used 1.87% ivermectin on their piggies? They seem to be acting themselves right now.
Im a first time piggie owner and now im just so scared im going to hurt or kill them because of this stupid mistake.
