I recently was having issues booting into windows from a corruption in windows boot manager. After giving up on saving the data, I decided to erase the drive to start from scratch. I wasn’t able to use the installation media to delete the drive, so I decided to try using the secure erase feature in my BIOS. Upon completion, I noticed that neither my BIOS nor my windows installation media are able to find my NVME SSD anymore.

I’ve tried the clear CMOS button, resetting BIOS settings, turning off secure boot, reinserting the SSD, and disconnecting the power. I don’t see any actual drivers for my ssd in the hp support page other than an updated firmware for it but it only comes as an exe file that I’m not able to initialize during the windows installation process.

My desktop is the HP Omen 45L and it uses an 8tb WD-black NVME SSD.

Are there any other settings or suggestions I can try?

I have hwinfo running as well. The one thing I'll say about PTM7950 phase change pads is that my cores have never before been so even across all cores. So definitely recommend PTM7950 pads for direct die chips.

Unfortunately, I was hoping that the commonly reporting "PTM7950 dropped my temps 5, 10, 20C" would get my HP Omen Transcend 14 under 100C when gaming.

Recommend looking at the other 3 or 4 posts I've made about this under my profile for more info but....

At this point, I'm really questioning if I'm overlooking something else. Bad BIOS setting? Thermal throttling stuck somehow at a firmware level?

Tekken 8, Tainted Grail, Witchfire, all used to run like absolute butter. One day, no changes, no driver updates, no nothing, playing Tekken, and everything went super slow-mo stutter mode. I've seen that before as early as when I first got the laptop, so I figured I'll just update my driver. No changes.

Let the laptop sit powered off over night, next day, same thing right out the gate almost (after maybe 30-60 seconds).

Lead me to think thermals was an issue. But unless something failed, why?

Factory thermal paste seemed decent enough, seemed thin to me, repasted.

***No results.

Perhaps I didn't seat the heatsync assembly with enough pressure. Repasted since I opened it a 2nd time. So 2nd time repasting. (Corsair XTM70 btw)

Still no changes.

the internals are completely clean, there's no fur, hair, dust, etc anywhere. Gave the internals a good blow out anyway.

VRM putty looks good (i think) it's still wet and I used a plastic tool to lightly spread it back into place (after raising the heat sync)

Okay... maybe I'm going extreme. Boot info UEFI to do a factory reset and some diag tests. Everything passes EXCEPT CPU temp. So all fans working, fan speeds are good.

Attempt a factory reset. Fails because the laptop seemingly thermal shutdown mid process.

Boot into UEFI, run CPU check. UEFI says CPU is too hot to do CPU check and to perform cooldown process first. Click to enter cooldown process, begins, and laptop shuts down midway, doesn't finish.

***No results

So at this point I've completely ruled out (in error or not) that there's NOT a software or driver issue, because even UEFI saw 102-104C CPU temps and couldn't complete diag or factory reset. Even the reinstall Windows failed.

(may be out of order here but THIS is when I got the PTM7950 phase change pads)

Installed those. PC idles at 45-50C. It would idle 50-60C after repasting, was about 70C before repasting. 45-50C sounded literally PERFECT for a laptop.

Start Tekken 8, Graphic Benchmark scored a 368. Tekken 8's benchmark score used to score me closer to 500 for the record. Okay whatever, put a few effects on medium and lets go.

1 minute into Tekken 8, chug chug chug again.

Now I'm at today and the timing of this pos

t. I'm frustrated, I'm spent. This laptop is only 16 months old. The CPU and GPU cooldown to their proper idles and stay there or very close when doing simple tasks like youtube and web browsing and even some board game apps.

But loading a 3D game is impossible to play.

I keep coming back to some kind of BIOS thing or something, but the issue popped up overnight without any changes. So that seems impossible. I did btw update the BIOS ANYWAY and that also changed nothing.

The only think I can think of, is my heatsync assembly is bad. Either it's warped and not making proper contact (seems odd since ALL CORES are the same temp as of PTM7950), or the vapor chamber failed or is failing and I need to replace the heat sync.

MAYBE, it's the putty on the VRMs? But the putty seems perfectly fine to me.

Worth mentioning that for whatever reason, HWiNFO and OMEN Gaming HUB show the GPU in green with flickers to yellow temps and back to green, but the CPU for some reason is getting up to 98, 102, 103C.

Thermal Throttling is turning off under about 80C, seems aggressive.

But again has NOT been an issue for 16mo.

IDK.... any ideas are welcome. I'm technical, I'm capable, but I can't figure it out....

As the title says, been seeing so many games being decompiled and then ported to pc, was wondering if same is possible with this, community can strip the bloat and yk since this already supports all the notebooks/PCs we can just optimise it and add features that matter and make it optimised..... i know its not that easy but i feel its very possible.

Hey all! New here and looking for some advice. I have an Omen 16 laptop that I’m looking to add ram to. It’s got 16GB right now and from what I understand it’s expandable up to 32. This laptop’s primary purpose is to run modeling software like SolidWorks and Fusion, but I do plan on doing a little gaming with it from time to time.

Two general questions: do I just grab the exact same 16 stick that’s already in there and install it, or do I have an option to replace both with a different brand or model memory that will give me better performance?

Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated 🤙

Hi all,

What is the most effective way to talk to a real person at HP? My Omen 16 failed and it's barley outside of the warranty period. Geek squad said they might not even fix it because they think it's either a bad motherboard or GPU. Has anyone had any luck talking with HP for support like this?
