HP Bios update procedure is not safe (but AI assistant is actually useful)

In the end it happened to me... I went to update my Omen Max 16 bios from F22 to F23, the update completed the first phase, than rebooted and after telling me to not shut down the PC i got stuck on a black screen for 30 minutes.

It was way past the time you can get assistance by a real human but I must say I was impressed by the AI chatbot. I selected my machine on HP support site, started the chat and described every step of what happened. I was fully expecting a "well, you are screwed, send back the pc or ask tomorrow to a real human", it instead guided me to a bios recovery procedure and in 15 minutes my laptop was back on his feet.

3/10 for the bios update procedure

8/10 for the AI assistant

Need help again.

this isn’t the first time this has happened, so again when I started up my computer it completely froze like last time and it would then proceed to send me to the memory training screen, last time it would just stay stuck on the memory screen, this time it’s different, so it did stay stuck for awhile so then I proceeded to power it on and off again and each time is a different screen it’s weird, so one of the screens is the normal omen start up and then proceeds to freeze on a black lit up screen, the other screen takes you to the omen loading saying please wait, you wait and it takes you to the more recovery options, from there if you pick exit and continue to windows it just freezes on you when trying to load into windows, and now I don’t know if I should be worried but sometimes when I power it a loud buzzing sound comes from the computer.
So I don’t know what could have possibly happened, if anyone could help me out that would be great thank you!

My HP OMEN RTX 5070 basically turned into a $2,000 paperweight after 11 months. Has anyone else experienced this?

I honestly expected better from a premium gaming laptop.

I've owned my HP OMEN (RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, 32GB DDR5, Intel Ultra 7 255HX) for almost 11 months. During that time I played demanding AAA games like Resident Evil 9: Requiem and Subnautica 2 at 1440p without any issues.

Then I started playing Overwatch for longer sessions.

After a few hours, the internal display suddenly went black. The laptop itself was still alive. Audio continued, the keyboard lights stayed on, and Windows seemed to keep running. Only the display disappeared.

A power drain reset temporarily brought it back.

Thinking it was an Optimus issue, I went into the BIOS and switched the graphics mode to Discrete GPU to completely avoid hybrid graphics.

It didn't matter.

The exact same issue happened again.

Eventually the situation became even worse:

Internal display stopped working.

HDMI worked only temporarily.

OMEN Gaming Hub's Graphics Switch became stuck and would not let me switch away from Optimus.

After attempting to reinstall the NVIDIA driver, HDMI output disappeared as well.

Now the laptop powers on, keyboard lights work, I can hear Windows, but there is no display output at all, either on the internal panel or through HDMI.

This is exactly the kind of failure I would expect from a five-year-old abused laptop, not from a premium gaming machine that isn't even a year old.

I know electronics can fail. I'm not claiming every HP OMEN has this problem.

But if a premium gaming laptop can effectively become unusable after less than a year because the graphics subsystem, MUX switching, firmware, or display path completely falls apart, then HP seriously needs to improve quality control and firmware reliability.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with HP OMEN laptops, especially involving Optimus, the MUX switch, or complete display loss?

I'm sending the laptop in for warranty service and will update this post with HP's diagnosis and repair results.

Finally upgraded after 8 years — ASUS TUF FX504GM → HP OMEN 16-AP0183AX🔥

After 8 years with my ASUS TUF FX504GM, I finally upgraded to an HP OMEN 16. And honestly… what a journey it has been. 😅

My old FX504GM served me incredibly well:

Intel Core i7 8th Gen

GTX 1060 6GB

16GB DDR4 RAM

1TB NVMe SSD + 1TB SSHD

I absolutely loved that machine. I maintained it like it was a museum piece — not a single scratch after 8 years. 😂

Then came March 2026.

During one of my regular half-yearly laptop maintenance sessions, I was removing the heatsink. Somehow, the laptop slipped from my hand and dropped.

And unfortunately… the GPU chip got damaged. 💔

You can imagine the pain. After keeping a laptop almost perfectly for 8 years, having it die because of one stupid accident during maintenance was brutal.

Initially, I decided to repair it. But the repair estimate was around ₹25,000, and at that point I started thinking…

"Maybe it's finally time to upgrade."

So I started looking for a replacement and eventually decided on the HP OMEN 16 (AP0183AX) — specifically because I wanted this exact configuration/model.

And then the laptop-buying saga began. 😂

I ordered the OMEN from Amazon for around ₹1.42 lakh.

It arrived bent.

Yep. A brand-new ₹1.42L laptop… bent right out of the box. 😭

I immediately placed a return request.

And then Amazon took more than a month just to pick up the laptop. 🤦‍♂️

After finally getting the return sorted, I ordered the same model from Flipkart, this time for around ₹1.57 lakh.

Finally, the laptop arrived in perfect physical condition.

Except…

The warranty wasn't showing correctly. 😐

Thankfully, I didn't have to fight with anyone or send the laptop anywhere. The warranty issue was fixed within 3 days.

And now…

I'm finally relieved. 😂

I did end up paying quite a bit extra compared to my original Amazon purchase, but I really wanted this exact model, so I decided to go for it.

And honestly?

I'm extremely happy with it.

I've been playing 007 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and the difference from my old GTX 1060 machine is just insane.

The graphics are beautiful, everything feels incredibly smooth, and the cooling performance has genuinely impressed me.

Going from an 8th-gen i7 + GTX 1060 after 8 years to a modern OMEN feels like a massive generational jump.

My old FX504GM will always have a special place in my heart though. ❤️

It survived 8 years, countless hours of gaming, work, upgrades, maintenance and everything else I threw at it.

It didn't die because it was old.

It died because I dropped it while trying to maintain it. 😭😂

So here's to the next chapter with the OMEN. 🔥

8 years with the TUF. Hopefully another 8+ with the OMEN.

Now I just need to stop touching the heatsink. 😂

Does your Omen Max 16 also keep the fans active even when at Sleep?

Hi, new owner of a HP Omen Max 16 here. I was wondering if it is normal for the laptop fans to never stop spinning even when the laptop is asleep.

I have already disabled fans always active in the BIOS but the issue still persists. Does anyone have any idea about this, any way to make them stop when the laptop is at sleep?

Omen 16 valorant performance

I have a 2024 hp omen 16 with Ryzen 9 7940hs and rtx 4070 and I have set it to performance and discrete mode but when I play valorant I get around 180-250 fps in a normal match while I had a pc previously with Ryzen 5 5600 and an rtx 3060 with a ddr4 ram and that used to give me around 300-360 fps in a normal match, can anyone help me fix this

Was CoD Secure Attestation bug fixed?

I see some people on the forum were still unable to play CoD on HP becuase the security bug. That's going on over 8 months, going on a year now. Someone said HP said the Game Dev's had to fix it.

I threw my HP in the trash can. jk I sold my Omen Max 16. Lost about $1k, had it for a year though, so I got to use it for about $80 a month. It was ok for $2k with the RTX 5080, it's compared to 5060ti desktop performance, still leaving something to be desired for the cost compared to desktop equivalent being substantially more powerful.

🍻

Edit:

HP just rolled out a new bios/ uefi update that is said to fix secure attestation bug. Go get it.

I'm just asking to anyone who has it , how long battery does last?

Edit: I FORGOT TO EDIT PRICE $ 💀

The new Intel CPUs on these Omens surprisingly have a long battery life non gaming

On the HP omen RTX 5050, Intel Core Ultra 5 225H I can get 5-6 hours non gaming on a 70wh battery.

People always tell me gaming laptops last 2-3 hours but this is enough for a school day for me.

Omen 16 with arch compatability

Hi, I’m Zay , an AI/ML student, and I’m planning to install Arch Linux on my HP OMEN 16 laptop.

However, my friends have warned me that Arch Linux may have limited support for the OMEN 16’s fan-control system. They said that I might be able to monitor the fan speed (RPM), but may not have proper control over the fans or access to all the performance and cooling features available in Windows.

My main concern is heating. I’ve heard that on Arch Linux, especially when the laptop is under heavy workloads or running in Performance mode, the fans may not ramp up properly or quickly enough. This could potentially cause the laptop to become hot around the touchpad and palm-rest area, even when the system is supposed to be running at higher fan speeds.

Since I’m an AI/ML student, I’ll be doing demanding workloads that may involve CPU and NVIDIA GPU usage. So before installing Arch Linux, I want to know whether the OMEN 16’s fan control, temperature management, performance modes, and NVIDIA GPU can be properly managed on Arch Linux without causing overheating or hardware-related problems.

Basically, I want to know whether Arch Linux is a safe and practical choice for my OMEN 16, particularly regarding fan control, RPM monitoring, thermal management, Performance mode, and long-term cooling.

OMEN 16 RTX 5070 – Only ~1h45–1h50 battery life. Normal?

Hi everyone,
I have a brand-new HP OMEN 16 (16-ap0000) with RTX 5070.

I'm getting only ~1h45–1h50 during light VLC video playback.

Test conditions:

  • Best Power Efficiency
  • 60 Hz
  • Low brightness
  • RTX 5070 confirmed at 0% usage
  • AMD Radeon 610M active
  • Windows energy-saving recommendations applied

I repeated the test and got essentially the same result.

For other OMEN 16 RTX 5070 owners: is ~1h45–1h50 normal for this configuration? What battery runtime are you getting?

HP has already escalated my case, but I'd like to compare with other owners before deciding what to do next.

UPDATE on my HP OMEN 16 RTX 5070 Laptop's Black Screen / Hall Sensor Case

Quick update on the RMA situation with HP Support and their authorized service provider (BDH):

After refusing their initial push for basic repairs and demanding a unit replacement under consumer protection laws (due to the well-documented Hall sensor / thermal saturation latent defect), HP customer relations stepped in.

Their immediate response was the standard scripted pushback: claiming that replacement is only an option within the first 6 months of purchase, and since the laptop is around 11 months old, repair is my only option. When I stood my ground on latent engineering defects, they essentially gave me an ultimatum: "Accept the repair or we ship the laptop back unrepaired."

To keep the legal clock ticking, I let the RMA proceed, but here is the ridiculous part: the service center officially diagnosed the issue as an "LCD screen failure." They just ordered an SPS-RAW PANEL 16 LCD 2.5K and an SPS-BEZEL LCD from overseas, with the estimated delivery date showing as "null".

They are deliberately treating the symptom (black screen) as a faulty panel rather than acknowledging the thermal design flaw where the Hall sensor/MUX circuitry gets cooked right next to the heat pipes. Replacing a perfectly fine 240Hz screen is not going to fix a motherboard-level thermal issue.

The 20 business-day legal repair window is officially counting. If the parts get delayed past the statutory limit, I am taking the case straight to the Consumer Arbitration Board for a mandatory replacement. If they actually slap a new panel on it and return it, I expect the black screen to return the moment the system gets under load again—at which point a secondary failure guarantees an open-and-shut replacement ruling.

I will keep updating as soon as the parts arrive or the deadline expires.

I mostly clock cs2 hours in it, after around 200hrs in 3 weeks I can say it’s perfect. No issues at all. Not as powerful as my my rig at home, but powerful enough.
