Genetic Cardiomyopathy testing

Hi all! I had a very bad experience at a cardiologist, was basically denied help. Want to know if others were able to get help for a similar situation.

I went to a cardiologist and he said genetic testing was not possible because my father never had genetic testing. Best they can do is an echo. Is that right? Will I never know if I have genetic traits for heart failure that could kill me in my forties until it happens? It just doesn’t seem right.

Background; My father passed at 52 from Non ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy. He had his first cardiac arrest at 42. Nobody told me I should get genetically tested (we don’t know why my father had it - he never got tested), until now. Now I talk to older family members and they say things like “oh yeah someone told me 8 years ago you seriously need to get tested and idk it slipped my mind”.
