Would You Listen to an Indian Drake or The Weeknd?

Hey everyone!

I’ve always dreamed of making music, and this year I finally decided to take it seriously by learning music production. I don’t really know anyone personally who’s into production, so I’m figuring everything out on my own. I also feel like learning production is essential if you want full creative control over your music and the vision behind it.

I’m still a beginner, but I already have a pretty clear sound in my head. I can also write songs, and that’s the part I feel most confident about.
The music I want to make is quite different from what’s traditionally been popular in India. For years, Bollywood dominated the scene, but over the last decade we’ve seen independent music grow a lot, especially hip-hop, and more recently indie pop.

The title is a bit of clickbait 😅 because I don’t want to sound like Drake, The Weeknd, or anyone else. They’re huge inspirations, but my goal is to create my own sound. I think if you’re just copying someone, you’ll always be compared to them instead of becoming your own artist.

The kind of music I want to make is alternative R&B with dark, atmospheric, melodic production—music you’d play on a late-night drive, while chilling alone, or just getting lost in your thoughts. I also love trap and want to explore that lane, but sometimes I wonder if there’s enough audience for it in India. It feels like indie pop is getting a lot more attention here, while trap and melodic rap haven’t reached the level they have in the US.

So I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Do you think there’s space for this kind of music in India? Would you listen to an artist making dark alternative R&B and melodic trap if it felt authentic?

Also, if you’re a producer, songwriter, artist, engineer, or anyone trying to build something in a similar lane, I’d love to connect. It’d be great to meet like-minded people and grow together.

Thriving on Indie Music Playlist (Self created)

Am quite taken away that how Indie Songs by new artists (early 20s) can heal my subconscious ....

I always though Binaural, Spiritual Music or Country, Retro Jazz music would do that for me ...

But just loving how independent artists are creating such honest music that it can appeal to your heart, guts, brains to put them all to peace at once...

Loud shout to Anshul Rajpoot - I don't know if he's real or AI but what lovely collection!!

Building a Community Playlist: Recommend Indian artists who are taking risks (not chasing trends)

Let's build a playlist of Indian artists doing something genuinely different.

Doesn't matter if they have 50 monthly listeners or 500k.

Looking for songs that made you stop and think,
"I can't believe an Indian artist made this." lol

Could be shoegaze, post-rock, electronic, math rock, folk, noise, ambient, experimental hip hop... anything.

Drop one song (preferably with a Spotify link) and tell me why you think its unique.

I'll compile everything into one community playlist and share it here once it's done.

Will India ever have its own global music artist?

If yes, how do you think they'll be perceived by India and the world? What will be their biggest challenges and will they be accepted by the world. Will they even make it?

How popular were the Beatles, Cream, Elvis Presley and B.B. King specifically in the Indian subcontinent? How did people of those times listen to these artists in India?

I recently watched a clip of pop Indian figure on all these artists. But as a Gen-Z I wonder how they (in India) had opportunities to listen to these artists. So, people of the 60s, enlighten me your glorious pastimes from how you first listen to them to what's your favorite track of these artists?

Mumbai band just released a Hindi rock song about unsolicited advice and being told what's wrong with you all the time

A lot of songs are written to defend yourself.

Kami is the opposite.

It's about that moment when everyone around you seems convinced they know what's wrong with you. Instead of arguing back, the song leans into it with sarcasm:

"Tum sab toh theek ho, kami toh mujhme hai."

Mumbai-based band Daira has finally released the song along with a high-energy performance video shot in a gritty warehouse setting. It's been part of their live set for quite some time and audiences have always connected with it immediately.

Would genuinely love to hear your thoughts.

Gorillaz and Foo Fighters are coming to India in 2027. Who are you still waiting to see?

It’s honestly unreal seeing how many massive international acts are finally coming to India now.

Gorillaz, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Travis Scott, The Strokes, 50 Cent, Deep Purple, Opeth… a few years ago this kind of lineup would’ve sounded completely made up.

The live music scene here is really changing.

For me, it would be Tool. A Tool show in India would be absolutely unreal.

So who’s still on your wishlist?

Which international artist or band would make you instantly book tickets if they announced an India show?
