Watch Party Vibe?

Has anyone been to Seattle Center for World Cup for a watch party? We're thinking about coming out for the Mexico game tomorrow. Festivities downtown looked a little rowdy since we have a 3 mo old in tow.

Recommended listening for some KEXP magic: Kevin Cole drops in on today's OG Thursday

Larry Mizell Jr., as always, was putting on a hell of a clinic today for OG Thursday, which highlighted the work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. I listened intently because I'm a Minneapolis homer, and was loving every second of it.

But something special happened in this show that I recommend everyone tune in to the Streaming Archive for: Larry brought in Kevin Cole at about 2:40 PM (Pacific) or so. Kevin just drops some massive personal knowledge of the music scene in Minneapolis that brings these musicians to life in a way nobody else can.

Seriously, listen to the whole OG Thursday in the Archives if you can, and be sure to keep your ears open at the 2:40 PM (Pacific) mark.

Larry and Kevin are both treasures.

Larry Mizell's 6/25 Throwback Thursday Harry Nilsson show...wow

This is one of the best shows I've listened to in a long time. I'm not a Harry Nilsson super fan, more like Nilsson-curious. But after listening to this I realize I need way more Nilsson in my life.

The breadth and variety of music that Larry picked, the clips from old interviews, the transitions between songs, the hip-hop and electro tracks that sampled from his songs, the cover versions...just a fantastically curated and constructed show. I've heard Blazing Arrow a million times, had no idea Blackalicious sampled it from Nilsson.

Thank you Larry!

Trans Native - Sounds of Survivance

Aloha mai kākou,

I hope you don't mind the self promotion but tomorrow's annual episode of Sounds of Survivance is one I hold dear and I hope you're able to tune in or listen on the archive. The show is Trans Native, a 2-hour love letter to Trans people and all whose sexual and gender identities have them walk outside the lines of the binary construct.

I'll be sharing knowledge and words that existed amongst Native people long before the English language existed to show our relatives who are being confronted with hate, that they have been revered and cherished for who they are and seen as gifts by countless peoples since time immemorial.

KEXP Live Sessions- Bringing Interesting Music to the Masses

During a recent discussion about music with a neighbor, I came to realize how many amazing artists I have discovered because of KEXP performances.
Ranging from french ambient composer Nils Frahms introspective performance of “Says”,Brittish artist Floating Points and his band performing tracks from his first studio album “Elaenia”, and Salami Rose Joe Lewis beautiful version of “Were Dumb” featuring Simon Martinez on guitar all the way Dakhabrakha playing Ukrainian experimental folk and the recent viral Angine De Poitrines microtonal looping, KEXP has been a solid source of new music to me for over a decade.
So, I would love to hear your favorite KEXP discoveries.
A youtube playlist of the tracks mentioned.

OG Thursday - Harry Nilsson Edition

Another great episode from DJ Larry Mizell Jr.

I didn’t realize so many of these were Nilsson songs.

App Frustration

I almost exclusively listen through the app, and overall I like it. However, I’m getting frustrated with the random interruptions; when my wifi signal gets weak or when I walk out to the garage, etc, I either get the “ music is better…” bump or a lengthy promo for an upcoming event.

Been listening about thirty minutes this morning and it’s happened at least 7 or 8 times. The only solution I have is turning off wifi on my phone and using LTE data, which is not ideal.

Anyone else got this issue?

KEXP App Live or Archive

I’ve listened to KEXP live shows on YouTube for a long time now and I finally got the app to listen live. Just wondering, do you normally listen live or listen to archived shows in the app? I looked at Astral Plane and it looks like there’s a lot of bands I like, but that’s not on at a time I’d typically be listening. Am I missing out if I only listen live? Also, are the live performances on air or just recorded?

(Just for awareness, I’m trying to listen to music in new ways to ditch the algorithms, and I find the KEXP DJs to be better curators than any algorithm and they’re always picking bands I love and helping me find new favorite bands)

Playlist Data

Does anyone have a complete set of API data dating back to 2000? I lost my database that was complete and in rebuilding, I noticed the API now only goes back to 2008.

Thanks!

X - See How We Are (Live on KEXP)

X in duo 2010 laying it down what the condition is with a song written In 1987 and they could have written it today.

So. This condition has been the nature of what was for a long long time creeping into being normalized and now it's got a head of steam, they are going for it, they are doing it out in the open.

If you are outraged tell your neighbor, tell a stranger, tell someone why. You dont have to carry a sign, you dont have to risk your life in non-violent civil disobedience (sad, huh). The best thing we can do is talk to each other peacefully. Its that easy.

Live in studio hosted by KEXP-FM 90.3 Seattle, is operated by Friends of KEXP, a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization. KEXP is an affiliate of the University of Washington

Ive broadcast on public radio since i was 23, 40 years ago.Boy, I just LOVE public radio.

Curious about DJ Masa from Expansions

I'm curious about DJ Masa from Expansions. I recall enjoying listening to his sets. And then I'm not sure when he went off air. It would fun to look over some of the old setlists. KEXPlorer used to allow that kind of search. But now that it's been replaced. Not sure there's any way to go about that. Anyhow in appreciation of DJ Masa !!
