KLX 230 high idle - manual throttle adjustment?

Just picked up a 2023 KLX230R and I’m trying to figure out if what I’m experiencing is normal EFI behavior or something I should address. The bike tends to idle really high sometimes, and when going downhill or off throttle it almost feels like the RPM hangs or even picks up speed instead of giving consistent engine braking. It can get a little sketchy coming into turns or technical sections because it feels like the bike wants to keep pulling.

I’ve checked a few basics already and I’m still learning these newer EFI bikes. I’ve been seeing a lot of people recommend the HiVolt/manual idle adjustment screw conversion for the KLX230 and was wondering if anyone here has experience with it. Did it actually help the hanging/high idle issue? Any downsides or bad experiences? Anything I should know before installing one?

Also open to any other recommendations or things I should check first before ordering one. Appreciate any advice from other KLX230 owners.

Fog light update

First, thanks to everyone that replied to my original post. The info, pictures, suggestions helped a lot.

For now I like this idea/placement. Removed OEM blinkers, mounted in OEM location. Wired Amber ring to be used as blinkers. (I may wire them to be used as running lights also.) I ordered a 3 position switch since these lights have spot and flood lights separate. Ideally that should be great for on road (Spot) off road (flood). I have to wait until tonight to fully adjust before I can reassemble everything. Curious to know opinions.

Windshield opinion

I am on the fence when it comes to the look of a windshield on a dual sport. I ordered this on Amazon for around $80 to test out. (RevZilla one is over $200) Immediately noticed the bike felt quicker. It definitely helps cut the wind. Even at 5'8 and 165lb, I am not a huge wall, but enough to feel the turbulence from passing cars. After installing, bike had no issues getting up past 70mph, I was not a bobblehead as much. Longevity and quality of windshield is left to be tested. For anyone who is thinking about it, for the price I recommend at least trying it. After seeing other redditors post they have been using the same Amazon part, it was good enough quality testing to try it myself. Added a $20 tachometer also. I don't know why Kawasaki didn't make it part of the cluster from the factory.

Changing Gear Question

Very new rider here, just got the KLX SE. Keen to hear from more experienced riders about when to change gears on this bike.

I’m tending to switch quickly to second after first and then hearing the revs getting higher, feels like the bike is straining around 30kmph, so I generally move into third and then fourth about 45kmph, again as it feels like to my inexperienced ear that the bike starts to strain. This is all on flat paved roads.

I’m rarely going above 55 so hardly using anything over 4th gear.

Am I changing to third and fourth far too early?

West coast KLX230S

First experience of an dual sport/off road dirt bike. Coming from a decade of super bikes and nothing else, this thing makes me happy in ways they can't.

4500~ ish KMs bought late summer 2025.

Had a fullstand ECU but I don't think it was correct for a 2025 KLX230s. Popped like crazy and wouldn't "tune". Swapped back to oem and haven't looked back.

Larger intake , full triton pipe, pair delete, o2 block off, renthal bars, domino grips, barkbusters, ebay levers (cut down), hi volt shift saver (big difference in shift quality and finding nuetral), folding extended gear lever that fits a size 11 boot way easier, tail tidy, alu chain guide and hi volt skid plate (much needed lol), oem sherpa seat and a kdx80 or 125 front fender.

Fun ass bike. It's a little soft in OE trim for bigger guys. I knocked the rear shock down a few turns but It's not enough, suspension will be upgraded eventually.

I have a 2023 klx230s. Currently modded for trail riding.

48t rear sprocket

120 chain

Irc tr8 tires

Plus extra goodies such as levers, handguards, hivolt titanium exhaust, and more.

I want to have an extra set of rims/tires for street riding around town, mostly local/county roads with an occasional highway stint for a few miles. My thoughts are to keep the same rim sizes for simplicity, get some 90/10 tires and drop the sprocket back to either 45t or 43/42t so long as the 120 chain can accommodate it. I still have some room to move the rear axle back. Basically a simple trail to sumo swap and vice versa without major work, just swap rims, adjust chain tension, ride away.

advice or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks
