Honest Kedarnath Yatra Experience 12.05.2026

I travelled to Kedarnath Temple on 12.05.2026. As someone who travelled from abroad especially for the Char Dham Yatra, I was deeply disheartened by the management and overall experience. For a pilgrimage that receives millions of devotees every year, the lack of proper organisation at Kedarnath was shocking.
First, there is practically no proper queue system. What is called a “line” often turns into pushing, pulling, and near-stampede situations. After waiting for hours just to reach the checkpoint, devotees then have to struggle — and often bribe local vehicle operators — to even reach the actual trek starting point. I began my journey at 4 AM and only reached the trek base around 10 AM. By then, both I and my elderly family members were already exhausted.

1. Corruption and queue manipulation - Corruption is rampant. Priests openly bargain over “special darshan” prices without any hesitation, and devotees negotiate accordingly. It is disappointing to see people willingly cutting lines and taking over the turns of others who may have been waiting patiently for hours. If one cannot stand in line with patience and basic respect for fellow devotees, then perhaps one should reconsider visiting altogether.

2. Special darshan misuse - Many priests insert their own clients directly into the middle of the queue. One person standing in line may actually be holding a place for dozens of others. No matter how early you arrive, there is always the possibility of people infiltrating the queue through personal “settings” with priests.
After an exhausting trek and being awake for nearly 24 hours, this becomes unbearable. It often feels as though proper darshan is only possible if money changes hands.
Although official special darshan tickets are supposedly available only until 6 PM, there are priests arranging them even late into the night. They wait for their designated clients inside the temple premises and conduct rituals after heavy monetary negotiations.

3. Horse management and animal abuse - I would strongly discourage travelling by horse unless absolutely necessary. The horses constantly disrupt pedestrians who are climbing on foot, and many horse handlers appear intoxicated or careless about safety. I witnessed horses being beaten relentlessly, overworked from 4 AM until late night, and treated with little compassion.
Some exhausted horses simply give up. Others revolt and are beaten even more harshly. I saw several riders fall, people collide with one another, and devotees nearly fall off the railings during the chaos.

If possible, I would instead recommend hiring pithus or palkis. These are hardworking individuals (many from Nepal) earning an honest livelihood through physically demanding work. Supporting them feels far more humane and responsible.

Pashupatinath Temple is also a sacred form of Mahadev. Supporting or participating in animal suffering cannot possibly bring good karma. Mahadev exists everywhere. Sometimes worshipping peacefully from home or online may feel spiritually purer than participating in such disorder and cruelty.

P.S I have used ChatGPT to make my writing more understandable, if any questions feel free to let me know.

Kedarnath:real pros and cons

Just back from kedarnath.Solo female first time trekker 41 years,MBBS MD,middle class coming from maharashtra tier two city. These are purely personal views sharing if it helps anyone.

Pros: 1: Nature is breathtaking.Amazing views.Stuff of what dreams are made of.
2.Obviously the deity gives you some vibe. The exact feeling is difficult to describe in words.
3.literally every inch of the track has food stall. You definitely wont starve.
4.Clean drinking water available throughout trek.
5.clean toilets available at frequent intervals.Indian style only.
6.people on the stalls are very co-operative.Helpful.Go out of the way to help.
7.You get to experience peak heat, peak cold, rainfall, downpouring, hailstorm and see the snow all in one day.

Cons: I really dont want to hurt anyone but this is my experience.First hand.I can vouch for this.
1.The trekking track itself is very difficult.Hardly 2.5 feet wide track on which pithhus, palanquins carried by four people, horses, trekkers goes both ways.
2.The safety railing on the sides is non existent on many patches or hangs by loose attachments.
3.the altitude obviously is very high.So as you go higher you experience diffrent symptoms. You may you may not.
4.Zero medical support available. I repeat Zero.one or two medical shops run very infrequently on the entire trek. There you nay get some first aid.
5.Zero security aid.One police guard i saw on the track of 24 kms.The horse owners hit people, charged carelessly knowing it will definitely hurt someone since its so crowded,no one comes for help. They threaten you, abuse you, abuse the horse,no one comes to even notice. From the police i mean.
6.The track is very very very dirty. The horses keep shitting and urinating over the track. Its filthy. The tents and other temporary structures have open drainage. You can see dirty water flowing underneath your feet.you inhale the horses shit, you sit in it,you eat in it and basically its all that only.
7.The track itself is not at all well maintained. With broken stones everywhere.Something you obviously expect.
8.The horse riders are the worst.Trust me and dont take a horse if you want to return home safely. On my trek alone i saw four bodies being carried.Three of which were horse related deaths.Like the horse kicked the man aside or it was so exhausted that it fell down and two people were thrown in the valley.Died on spot. One of which was baby of 8 months along with a woman.
(Why was the case not reported in news? Rather cases. Its a known fact here these cases are not reported.Horse runners or owners liteally abuse everyone around, hit them, push aside, cause the horse run causing havoc.
Also many of them appear under influence of something. But i cant confirm that. They are literally villains. If anyone questions them, they say remember you are not in your home.
9.pithhus and the palanquins are the safest and dont hurt anyone intentionally. But a pitthu will give you neck discomfort. No experience of palanquins. But looked comfortable.
10.worst part-Temple management-there is a nexus.(Some Darshan managers i will call them)-shop owners around the temple, these darshan managers dressed like religious people run a nexus.Everything can be done in black.Pay money and darshan in 15 mins.Gud amount i mean.Pay to the govt online, upto 8k for pooja and you stand in que for any number of hours.TOKEN system and all else is sham.fake.U need a token but it doesnt give guarantee you will get darshan. There also police know everything dont do anything.
11.second worst is traffic management. The road to and fro the temple is jammed for almost 10 hours. The distances you see on google and all is useless.and its not due to the crowd only. There is no one to oversee parking rules. The roads get narrower as both sides have vehicles parked.
12.registrations dont have any upper capping.Again a sham.

My advice-Whatever you do,do not take the horse.People got fractured, died and no one gives a damn.
Reels make it sound glorious. If you are a person to whom adventure and darshan matter more than your life, come here and attempt the trek. Or else seek comfortable options like helicopter.
Last word-A lot of corruption.Tourists pay and they are looting. The darshan managers i mean.Dont know about others.

For those who doubt me-yesterday i witnessed heat, cold, immense exhaustion, walked down 24kms,witnessed rain, hailstorm, traffic jam and literally saw people being packed in bags as they died.

Kedarnath trek pony query

Hello people,

I have a question regarding ponies...

Do I get pony ride at the start of trek only? Or can I hire them in middle of trek too...

For example... I started the trek on foot and completed 6-7km but later I couldn't walk due to fatigue, so can I hire the pony from that point to up to the temple?...
