‘Never Watch CBS Again’: Thursday Night Marks Colbert Finale
open.substack.comWhat We Lose With Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert understands the power of fear. As a character, he used it — built an entire television empire on it, rallied thousands to the National Mall under the banner “Keep Fear Alive,” even ran a satirical presidential campaign powered by it.
He spent a decade playing a man who trafficked fear nightly to expose it, to mock it, to make the people wielding it look ridiculous.
In the fall of 2012, he sat down with Playboy — one of the rare times he agreed to be interviewed as himself rather than as his character — and explained why fear is such an effective weapon. He quoted Thomas Jefferson: “I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” Injecting fear into people, Colbert said, is an attempt to kill their thinking. It’s an act of oppression.
Thirteen years later, his reflection turned out to be a premonition. He couldn’t have known he was foreshadowing his own ending.

Jimmy Kimmel urged his ABC viewers to catch Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' series finale on Thursday night: "Tune in to CBS, for the last time. Don’t ever watch it again."

Things cut from the episode (off the top of my head)
As you can tell, a LOT was trimmed, and, well, a LOT happened. Things I remember from this afternoon that didn’t make the cut:
-Towards the end of the opening monologue, the screens behind Stephen and his desk started doing some kind of glitching animation, and then the one behind the desk had a visual of some kind of magical green spinning portal thing. He looked quite confused, then told the audience that they’d fucked up (his words), and they took the part of the monologue he’d been on from the top. The glitchy visuals and green spiral thing never showed up again, so maybe it’s something for the finale?
-Stephen had more memories of his first concert, specifically of his mom being bored during the concert and their seats were super far up.
-Stephen and Jeff Daniels reminisced about one of their first interviews together, and they both put their feet up on the desk as they remembered.
-Stephen and Martha had a discussion about their favorite kinds of apples.
-Stephen and Aubrey got into a wild deep dive on whether Stephen would rather have sex with a cat or a dog, to which Stephen chose a cat (specifying it had to be human sized). Then she asked which he’d rather wake up to singing, to which he also chose a cat. Then he asked how far along Aubrey was in her pregnancy, which she wouldn’t answer, and he remarked that he’d just revealed he’d have sex with a cat so Aubrey should be able to answer his question. Then she pretended to go into labor. Tiffany was referenced, so she ran out to “help” as Aubrey sorta spread her legs out with Stephen bracing her back.
-Ben Stiller referenced the Knicks more and encouraged the audience to cheer for them as he exited.
-James Taylor remarked how he and Stephen will have more time to go fishing together.
-Stephen brought all the guests out for a group photo, and then as they all faced him, he gave a lovely speech thanking them for their support (and patience with him) over the years.
-After the main filming ended, Stephen came back out and sat on his desk to thank the audience as a spotlight shone on him. Hauntingly, the black and white American flag from Bruce’s performance was still on the screen behind him as he spoke. I really hope that gets posted, it was a striking image.
-After Stephen exited, the audience wouldn’t stop cheering, so he came back out and gave another lovely speech thanking his entire crew, and the audience again.
There’s definitely a lot more, it was a long couple hours or so of nonstop, surprises, and excitement, but that’s what I remember for now!
This time tomorrow I’ll be cancelling my paramount plus subscription
Gonna miss Colbert. Glad he got the spot 10 years ago.
Springsteen
What balls he has!
Thank God for the outspoken Boss!!
Just got out of tonight’s taping. Brace yourselves for historic epicness!
No spoilers, but it was a celeb-palooza. Can’t believe everyone I just got to see in person! Incredible, hilarious, heartfelt. Episode for the history books!
One episode left. Do you think he’ll get his Pope interview?
It’s THE thing he’s been holding out for and I can’t imagine it should be that difficult given how big the show is. Granted I fully expect he’ll get to interview him at some point in the future, but I really would love this for Colbert.
It was Three
He admitted the hint was that he never said no.

Pre-Chris Licht. Granted idk if the show would’ve made it this long or this strong without his changes, but I still loved the chaotic energy Stephen’s personal showrunning had.
Finale registration cancelled
If you got tickets for the finale, check your emails.
We just got an email from The Late Show’s audience team saying tomorrow’s taping has reached capacity and our registration has been cancelled.
I checked my 1iota account and our priority tickets have indeed disappeared.
We flew here last night to attend the taping since we had priority tickets. We filled out the request form back in April, were in the first batch of invites and immediately confirmed our attendance.
