A Note From The Developer

The beta for Kai has officially been released.

While you enjoy the game and the different versions, I'll be continuing development of something a bit... different.

Please feel free to post about and discuss the game in full on this subreddit as well, including gameplay, questions or things such as builds and boss advice, etc.

There are very small glimpses into something I'm working on in this post, but I'll release more details later.

For now, it's time to catch up on some much-needed rest.

Also, for those that have been asking, you can buy me a coffee here if you want to support my caffeine addiction, but please don't feel as if it's an obligation or expected; I genuinely enjoy game development and making something that fans of the series can enjoy.

Pre-Release Patch Notes

There was a serious bug that was caught earlier that could only happen under very specific circumstances but was enough of an issue that I wanted include the fix in my pre-release patch rather than waiting until the next update.

There were several adjustments made in response to player feedback as well, all included below.

Trunks:

Trunks wasn't DPS King anymore after SS2 Gohan became available, so he's been buffed significantly; his power-up while Super Saiyan has been tuned to better resemble Super Saiyan Third Grade.

The form slows Trunks down even more but gives him a boost in power much closer to SS2-level.

The KI drain is still pretty fast, so you won't be able to maintain the massive amount of power for long.

Trunk's notes are this long because his form was reworked.

Vegeta:

Super Saiyan Grade 2 was buffed significantly.

Goku:

Kaioken HP drain was reduced.

Kaioken buffed.

Super Saiyan Kaioken buffed.

Gohan:

Super Saiyan 2 slightly buffed.

Piccolo:

Nail's Aura Buffed; syncing with Nail feels like Fusion-Level Power.

Super Namek now enhances Nail's Aura.

Super Namek drain significantly reduced.

Other Fixes:

Androids 17 and 18 nerfed.

Dinosaurs nerfed.

Ninja buffed.

Destroyers buffed.

Exp rewards increased for several enemies.

Mechanics Added:

The Power Stat has been tuned to reward the player explosively for having higher Power instead of using a flat formula.

Transforming now directly affects ki attack damage and stacks with the Power Stat re-tune.

KAI RELEASES TONIGHT AMA

I'm finishing up the final patch and proofreading my documents for the official release.

I want to thank everyone that's managed to find this subreddit for all of the support up until this point; I know that the project was only recently announced, but the support from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and I can't thank all of you enough for that.

Please keep in mind that though I'm releasing the project soon, this is still a beta and there may be bugs and fixes via a patch later on.

Additional content will likely not be added at this point, but as you can see from the screenshot, something else will be announced soon.

Notes Before Release

Kai releases soon.

Kai is Legacy of Goku 2 but highly modified and overhauled.

While Kai changes many things about the way the game feels and introduces new mechanics, everything that was added to Kai was made to enhance the vanilla experience, not replace it.

If you've played The Legacy of Goku 2 already, you know the story and you know that the game isn't very long; once you've defeated Cell, you grind.

Kai will release with multiple versions, but with release being so close, I want to break down again what that means.

Kai and all of its versions are Story mode.

Because this a rom hack for a game to which there are no tools, documentation or disassembly, there is no real way of modifying data outside of binary manipulation... which is very limited and takes significant time and work.

That being said, I believe that a good game allows player control and options, and though we're limited to one game, I've made several versions that act as "Difficulty Settings"

The versions are more than just lazy stat changes and making enemies weaker or stronger, but each version has mechanics and modifiers unique to each version.

There will be a post for each version of the game for quick reading.

There will be a separate post for a Version that's completely separated from Kai but you'll have to see that for yourself.

KAI

The main build, the one I balanced everything else around.

If vanilla's problem was that the world stops mattering the second you out-level it, Kai's whole answer is to make the world keep up with you.

Enemies are buffed across the board, but not bluntly; regular mobs, elites, and bosses each get scaled differently so a random animal on the map and a Dinosaur don't get treated like the same threat.

The level cap goes past vanilla's ceiling so there's actually somewhere to climb after the credits would normally roll, and the stat range opens up to match.

The big shift is that transformations finally mean something.

In vanilla, going Super Saiyan is mostly a costume.

In Kai it's a real power state that costs you energy to hold, so you're making a decision every time you pop it instead of just leaving it on forever.

On top of that, every character has their own toolkit now:

Goku has Kaioken, everyone else has their own Power-Up mechanic, and there are passive traits that kick in when your health gets low so a fight that's going badly can still be clawed back.

And then there's the part I'm most happy with...beat the Cell Games and the entire world gets stronger.

The grind that used to be dead air becomes a genuine post-game, because the enemies you walk back into are not the ones you left.

If you don't know which version to pick, this is the one I recommend starting with for the full experience.

CASUAL

This is the version for the player who just wants to enjoy Dragon Ball Z's story and for the people who prefer the OG experience with a few enhancements to Gameplay.

Casual pulls the new systems back out and lets the game breathe close to how it originally did.

Enemies sit at vanilla strength, the level and stat caps go back to where they were, and the comeback mechanics, Kaioken, Power-Ups and Traits are all removed; all they do is break the balance of the game in this mode completely as the original game never has you face an enemy with stats higher than 70.

Recovery is fast and forgiving. There's no post-Cell difficulty spike waiting for you on the other side of the Cell Games.

I want to be clear that this is not a lesser version, it's a different intent.

Some people don't want a challenge run; they want to relive the story, watch the cutscenes, and feel strong doing it. Casual respects that. It's the relaxed playthrough, and there's nothing wrong with wanting that.

As a bonus, Transformations last a long time in this mode and I've still buffed them to scale with you, unlike vanilla.

One heads up: because the caps are lower here, if you bring a save in from one of the tougher versions where you've already over-leveled, Casual will rein those numbers back in to fit its own ceiling.

That's intended.

Comparing damage with a powerup vs without in the beginning area

Testing a power up option.. Obviously the og game does not have this feature so I'm like a kid in a candy store right now (: So far it's very easy to turn on & off, and there's a visible difference in damage 💪 And the visual?! Hello!! Can't wait until the full release so you all can experience just how cool this is for yourselves.

Finally Got This Working

I'm exhausted and getting some much needed sleep, but at this point I can say I've gotten this working and he's fully playable.

While he won't be available in the standard version of Kai, there's a final version soon to be announced that I'll be showcasing that includes him and a host of new features that couldn't make it into Kai due to free space and mandatory story content that couldn't be cut in order to add more.

More to come soon!
