Limit-Break Update

Limit-Break has been overhauled to give the player more benefits and rewards for pushing themselves beyond what was previously possible.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP stops growing naturally after level 65 while ki continues to grow slowly, even after breaking limits.

Limit-Break is only possible after defeating Cell.

Breaking limits is possible once you reach the max level of 70; if you have defeated Cell, gaining experience will break through previous limits and reset your level to 1 with a new max level of 80.

Every character can Limit-Break, including Hercule.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once a character has broken limits, their base form immediately grows stronger and gets a significant boost that stacks with transformation.

In addition to the base form boost, a limit-broken character will also gain a speed increase in base that stacks with transformation.

Characters will receive a large health and ki bonus when their level is reset and keep their gained stats, much like a "prestige" system.

Vegeta and Trunks will both master Super Saiyan and use Grade 4 like Goku and Gohan.

Stat increases are awarded every few levels as opposed to every level up, but ki continues to grow slightly every time your level increases so it's never pointless.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon reaching the post limit-break level cap of 80, characters will gain another boost to their base form and their transformation will become Limit-Broken, increasing it's power and effectiveness even further.

Hercule has no transformation, but he gains Plot Armor and becomes very difficult to take down.

More to come!

Insanity Feels Like Horror

Warthogs and Snakes are giving Micheal and Jason a run for their money this year... I was legitimately terrified😂

Explosive Ki

Ki is now heavily boosted when powering up, allowing you to do incredible damage and making your skills much more useful.

Previously, even while going Super Saiyan or Powering-Up, it was very rarely worth using your ki over making the most of the transformation and punching the enemy to death with the short window of time given to you.

With the overhaul, transformations and power-ups provide a large power multiplier while using ki attacks, allowing the player to actually put their ki to work in the situations where it matters the most.

This makes some skills, such as the Spirit Bomb, truly devastating and actually worth all of the time and energy required to use it when in a transformed state; a Kaioken Super Saiyan Spirit Bomb truly feels like powering up to max for a finisher like the anime and manga.

Vegeta And Trunks Grade 4

After breaking their limits, Vegeta and Trunks will master Super Saiyan and use Grade 4 like Goku and Gohan, giving them much better control and far less ki drain.

Vegeta will still utilize Grade 2 as his power-up as the form is actually much more sustainable after mastering Super Saiyan.

Trunks also will still utilize Grade 3 as a power-up because of the massive power multiplier that it provides as the Z-Fighters still haven't mastered Super Saiyan 2.

Trunks Buff

After several months of testing, I found Trunks to be a bit lacking compared to the rest of the cast.

For context, Goku is balanced and essentially the jack of all trades while being a master of ki control.

Gohan is a lite version of Goku with access to Super Saiyan 2, which pushes him further than Goku.

Vegeta is a defensive powerhouse that only gets harder to take down the longer the fight goes on.

Piccolo has natural recovery and incredibly powerful ki attacks that allow him to keep pressure up at long-range while recovering health.

Hercule threw Cell 16 feet off the top of Hell in the Cell Games in 1998.

Trunks, even with his higher crit rate, was completely outclassed by SS2 Gohan, couldn't tank hits like Vegeta and has no recovery, making his speed the only real redeeming factor.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trunks now has the highest crit rate and critical damage multiplier combined with the highest speed in the game aside from SS2 Gohan.

Sword Slash is capable of some of the highest damage in the game as it is also affected by Trunk's increased crit rate. (Yes, Sword Slash can crit unlike most ki attacks)

Although Trunks is still a glass cannon, the cannon part has been empasized further.

With his speed, crit rate and critical multiplier, limit-broken Trunks easily has the highest DPS in Kai.

Umbra Goku Update

Umbra Goku has been overhauled to better reflect the update to the post-game and the mechanics behind what happens to the world after defeating Cell.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without going into too much detail about the Limit-Break system in Kai (There will be a separate post breaking down the update to the Limit-Break mechanics), all you really need to know is that characters grow incredibly powerful after breaking their limits.

The entire system was designed around bridging the gap between the Cell Saga and Buu saga to make the transition to Buu's Fury feel more natural.

For the sake of scaling, characters are roughly around the strength they would reach a year before the Buu Saga after breaking limits and reaching max level.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the world of Kai Pre-Cell:

SS2 Gohan> Perfect Cell> Cell Jr> SS1 Goku

Post-Cell:

Majin Buu> Umbra Goku> Dabura=<SS2 Gohan> SS1 Goku=> Cooler> Perfect Cell

Cooler is no-joke post-Cell and will give Super Saiyan Kaioken Goku a hard time.

While SS2 Gohan outclasses Cooler, Umbra Goku shrugs off even SS2-level damage.

Umbra Goku uses a version of Grade 4 Super Saiyan that pushes his power to maximum, known as Full- Power Super Saiyan. This allows his to use Super Saiyan as a base and causes nearly no ki drain while allowing him to continue powering up and using Kaioken when pushed enough.

Transformations In Kai

There's been quite a few questions on how transformations and power-ups work in Kai and what exactly is available, so this post will break everything down and can be used as a guide for the future.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kai was created and fine-tuned with the manga as a guide.

For bosses, balancing and transformations, I almost always referred to the manga, so the results you see in-game are as close of a representation of the manga I could recreate without making the game unbalanced.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Saiyan Grade 1 (超サイヤ人第1段階, Sūpā Saiya-jin Dai Ichi Dankai, "Super Saiyan First Stage")

This is the original and standard Super Saiyan transformation first used by Goku against Frieza, generally treated as roughly a 50x increase over the user's base power.

It gives a massive balanced increase to strength, speed, durability and ki, but the early version isn't especially efficient.

Maintaining the form puts unnecessary strain on the body and also causes a degree of agitation or heightened aggression.

Goku, Vegeta, Future Trunks and Gohan all initially use Super Saiyan this way.

Grade 1 ultimately becomes the foundation for everything that follows, with Vegeta and Trunks trying to force more power out of it while Goku eventually realizes that mastering the basic form itself is the better solution.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Saiyan Grade 2 (超サイヤ人第2段階, Sūpā Saiya-jin Dai Ni-dankai, "Super Saiyan Second Stage")

Grade 2 is essentially Super Saiyan with its power output pushed beyond the normal level, causing increased muscle mass and a substantial increase in raw strength and ki.

Vegeta famously uses it as "Super Vegeta" against Semi-Perfect Cell and absolutely dominates him. Unlike Grade 3, the increase in muscle does not cripple the user's speed, so Grade 2 is still a legitimately effective combat form. Its weakness is efficiency.

It burns more energy, puts more strain on the body and ultimately tries to solve Super Saiyan's limitations by brute force. There is no confirmed canonical multiplier for it, so numbers like 75x or similar should only be treated as estimates.

In Kai, Vegeta can power-up to this form and hits harder and moves faster but drains ki quickly.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Saiyan Grade 3 (超サイヤ人第3段階, Sūpā Saiya-jin Dai San-dankai, "Super Saiyan Third Stage")

Grade 3 takes the same idea behind Grade 2 and pushes it much further.

The user's muscles swell dramatically and raw physical power becomes enormous, potentially allowing them to produce much more force than a normal Super Saiyan.

Future Trunks uses it against Perfect Cell because he believes he has discovered a level beyond Vegeta, but the form's weakness makes that extra power practically useless.

The extreme muscle growth severely damages speed, mobility and stamina, meaning Trunks possesses enough strength to threaten Cell but can't actually hit him.

Goku later demonstrates that he can use the form as well but immediately rejects it for the same reason, and Cell points out that Vegeta was almost certainly capable of it but understood its flaw. Grade 3 is basically the ultimate example of why battle power means very little if the fighter can't effectively use it.

In Kai, Trunks can power-up to this form and is capable of SS2-level power but drains ki incredibly fast and moves very slowly.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Saiyan Grade 4 / Mastered Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人第4段階, Sūpā Saiya-jin Dai Yon Dankai, "Super Saiyan Fourth Stage" / 超サイヤ人フルパワー, Sūpā Saiya-jin Furu Pawā, "Super Saiyan Full Power")

Grade 4 is Goku's answer to Grades 2 and 3.

Instead of continuing to force more power through Super Saiyan, Goku and Gohan remain transformed for extended periods until the form becomes almost as natural as their base state.

This removes most of Super Saiyan's unnecessary physical and emotional strain, dramatically improves stamina and allows them to remain completely calm while transformed.

More importantly, being relaxed in Grade 4 does not mean they are constantly fighting at maximum output.

They can suppress themselves while remaining Super Saiyans and then raise their ki into Full Power Super Saiyan when they actually need to fight, getting the full strength of the form without Grade 2 or 3's excessive muscle growth and energy loss.

This is what Goku and Gohan use during the Cell Games, and their mastery lets them surpass Vegeta and Trunks despite retaining the normal Super Saiyan physique. "Super Saiyan Full Power" is also the official name used for this mastered state in guide material.

In Kai, this is Gohan and Goku's default Super Saiyan state.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Saiyan 2 (超サイヤ人2, Sūpā Saiya-jin Tsū, "Super Saiyan 2")

Super Saiyan 2 is where the Saiyan actually succeeds in transcending Super Saiyan rather than modifying Grade 1.

It is generally treated as twice the power of Super Saiyan, or roughly 100x base if using the traditional 50x Super Saiyan figure, while increasing strength, speed and ki together instead of sacrificing one attribute for another.

The form is visually distinguished by sharper, more rigid hair and electrical discharges around the aura. Gohan is the first to fully awaken it during the Cell Games after Android 16's death finally triggers his rage, and the difference is enormous.

Perfect Cell could compete with Full Power Super Saiyan Goku, but SSJ2 Gohan completely overwhelms him. Its main weakness is that it consumes more energy than mastered Super Saiyan, although nowhere near as inefficiently as Grade 3.

Gohan can use this form in Kai after the Cell Games. Because this form is considered "perfect", it does not drain ki quickly and is usable for a significant amount of time.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kaioken (界王拳, Kaiō-ken, literally "King Kai Fist")

Kaioken is not a transformation at all, but a technique created by King Kai that temporarily multiplies the user's existing power.

Unlike Super Saiyan, its multiplier is adjustable, which is why Goku can use Kaioken, Kaioken x3, x4, x10, x20 and so on depending on how much power he needs.

In Kai, Goku uses Kaioken x20 and when dead, Kaioken x50 as the strain is heavily reduced.

The technique multiplies far more than punching strength, increasing speed, ki output, offensive power and defensive capability together.

Its greatest advantage is flexibility, since Goku can use short bursts and choose exactly how hard he wants to push himself.

Its weakness is that his body does not naturally become strong enough to handle the amplified output.

The higher the multiplier, the greater the physical damage, stamina consumption and risk of losing control. Goku first uses it against Nappa and Vegeta, later masters much higher levels while traveling to Namek, and eventually uses Kaioken x20 against Frieza before Super Saiyan renders the technique largely unnecessary during the original manga.

Though it isn't considered canon, I also included Super Kaioken from the anime as part of Goku's kit.

In Kai, Super Kaioken is almost as powerful as SS2 but far less efficient.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Piccolo + Nail, Namekian Assimilation (同化, Dōka, "Assimilation")

Piccolo's merger with Nail is fundamentally different from either Super Saiyan or Kaioken because it is a permanent Namekian assimilation rather than a temporary transformation.

Nail allows Piccolo to absorb him while Piccolo remains the dominant body and personality, gaining Nail's strength, knowledge and experience in the process.

The increase is enormous and appears to be synergistic rather than simply adding their battle powers together.

Nail himself had a confirmed battle power of 42,000 and was completely helpless against First Form Frieza, yet after assimilating Nail, Piccolo becomes powerful enough to fight Second Form Frieza, who had already surpassed one million.

The official Japanese material specifically calls the Namekian ability Dōka and describes it as allowing Namekians to become several times stronger.

The major weakness is really on the absorbed Namekian's side, since Nail gives up his independent body and existence permanently. There is no confirmed universal multiplier for the fusion.

In Kai, Piccolo can sync with Nail and boost his power level and regeneration while also shielding him with a Namekian aura that blocks ki damage.

-------‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Piccolo + Kami, Fusion/Reunification (神様との融合, Kami-sama to no Yūgō, "Fusion with Kami")

Piccolo merging with Kami is even more significant because they aren't simply two unrelated Namekians.

Kami and the original King Piccolo were created when the Nameless Namekian split himself into his good and evil halves, with Piccolo Jr. later continuing King Piccolo's existence.

Their fusion therefore functions as a reunification of a being that had originally been divided. Piccolo remains the dominant personality but gains Kami's power, memories, knowledge and experience, on top of already possessing Nail.

The power increase is ridiculous. Before the fusion, Android 17 is comfortably beyond Piccolo; afterward, Piccolo can fight 17 virtually evenly and temporarily becomes stronger than the Super Saiyans who had previously fought the Androids. Like Nail's assimilation, there is no legitimate canonical multiplier to attach to it.

Its greatest strength is that the increase is permanent and carries none of the stamina problems associated with transformations like Super Saiyan or Kaioken, while its greatest cost is that Kami permanently ceases to exist as a separate individual and Earth's Dragon Balls disappear until Dende later becomes the new guardian.

In Kai, Piccolo conserves ki and stamina even after fusing with Kami; however, Piccolo can remove his weighted clothing and stop supressing his power level, allowing him to display his full power.

The drain only comes from his massive boost in regeneration speed; his healing factor drains ki modestly.

Every single one of these forms are available in Kai.

"How Much Harder Is Insanity Mode?"

Insanity can be closest described as "Professional Mode" if Legacy of Goku Kai were Resident Evil 4.

I'll fully break down all of the changes soon, but the overhaul makes it roughly 3x as difficult as it was in the original beta release.

u/AceofheartsDev — 13 days ago

Exploring Cut Content

There's some hidden gems that exist deep within the data, some usable, some... not so much.

King Cold can walk on the overworld fine but has issues with collision detection, combat and is buggy in general... but getting him to spawn is a huge step in the right direction.

There are a few other enemies that were cut for some reason, most of them golden variants of already existing enemies.

I may do something with these in the future, but as of now it's not being implemented as I typically spend several weeks testing features and don't want anything interfering with the progress of this update.

Grade 2 And 3 Size-Up

Super Saiyan Grade 2 and Grade 3 will size up Vegeta and Trunks when they power up.

Trunk's size-up is closer to Broly-level; Trunks in Grade 3 was the inspiration for Legendary Super Saiyan, after all.

You can also see that Trunks is capable of incredible damage in this state that is near SS2-level but it slows him down considerably.

Insanity Overhaul And Vegeta Buff

In addition to Kai's Overhaul, Insanity has been completely reworked as well.

While it was challenging before, Insanity is now a completely different experience and truly feels worthy of the name.

More enemies, more aggressive AI... and that's only the beginning.

Vegeta also has been buffed significantly and is without a doubt the most durable out of all the characters.

It's not quite Ultra Ego, but... kind of? 😅

I'm Alive.

I apologize for the lack of updates and responses to people.

I've been committed to working on the update and testing everything out in full to prepare for the release of the overhaul.

While I'm still in the process of testing (limit-breaking all characters and testing them out all the way to 80 is no small task... and don't get me started on defeating Umbra Goku AND Frieza as every character...), I do have some good news to share.

I'll be releasing an official dev-log that will break down Kai, the changes from vanilla, what to expect in the update and a very small introduction to myself and future projects.

Hercule Buff

Hercule has been tuned even further and can take hits a bit better than he could before.

He also benefits from Limit Break just as the other characters do, but instead of getting a Limit-Break Transformation he receives a significant buff to his base.

This is Insanity Mode that I'm testing on for context on his damage output.

Randomizer Mode Update

It would benefit you to be on guard at all times while exploring in Randomizer Mode.

There will be 3 variants, each with a different "feel" and difficulty style:

Randomizer A is light randomization and enemy strength.

Randomizer B is balanced.

Randomizer C is chaos.😅

I highly recommend beating Insanity Mode before attempting Randomizer C.

Post-Game Goku Halo Fix

Minor detail, but I went ahead and polished it along with the aura.

As you can see in the video, it also pauses and is no longer draining ki or health while leveling up, so you're no longer at a disadvantage for reading how much your stats went up.

It's been a productive weekend😁

Krillin Tuning

Not only can you play as him and fight in the semi open-world version in development, but he will function like an actual character with skills, power-ups and the ability to level and use capsules like all of the other characters.
