A Note From The Developer

The beta for Kai has officially been released.

While you enjoy the game and the different versions, I'll be continuing development of something a bit... different.

Please feel free to post about and discuss the game in full on this subreddit as well, including gameplay, questions or things such as builds and boss advice, etc.

There are very small glimpses into something I'm working on in this post, but I'll release more details later.

For now, it's time to catch up on some much-needed rest.

Also, for those that have been asking, you can buy me a coffee here if you want to support my caffeine addiction, but please don't feel as if it's an obligation or expected; I genuinely enjoy game development and making something that fans of the series can enjoy.

Known Bugs And Cheats

Fortunately, I've not been able to encounter anything game-breaking present in Kai; however, I want to be clear that this is a romhack and the game and engine were pushed well beyond what was originally possible in order to achieve the mechanics and gameplay that Kai was built on.

That being said, please save often as things can happen and any major bugs should be reported.

There is currently a known bug in the game that causes a crash if SS2 Gohan uses a flight circle.

I've expressed many times that being able to use this form outside of the Cell Games was no easy task and took a great deal of time to get working.

Though the form works well, there was never a sprite for SS2 Gohan flying and when the game calls for said sprite that doesn't exist, the result is a crash.

This won't affect most people, but please just be aware that until a potential fix is applied, this can crash the game.

It's a bug that is also completely avoidable; using the fight circle in base or Super Saiyan behaves normally.

While I have no issue with anyone wanting to use cheats, I highly suggest that you don't as many of them no longer work properly as many values that the cheats modify have been adjusted, replaced or reassigned, making using them unpredictable at best and game-breaking at worst.

You're free to play however you'd like, but please save often.

Pre-Release Patch Notes

There was a serious bug that was caught earlier that could only happen under very specific circumstances but was enough of an issue that I wanted include the fix in my pre-release patch rather than waiting until the next update.

There were several adjustments made in response to player feedback as well, all included below.

Trunks:

Trunks wasn't DPS King anymore after SS2 Gohan became available, so he's been buffed significantly; his power-up while Super Saiyan has been tuned to better resemble Super Saiyan Third Grade.

The form slows Trunks down even more but gives him a boost in power much closer to SS2-level.

The KI drain is still pretty fast, so you won't be able to maintain the massive amount of power for long.

Trunk's notes are this long because his form was reworked.

Vegeta:

Super Saiyan Grade 2 was buffed significantly.

Goku:

Kaioken HP drain was reduced.

Kaioken buffed.

Super Saiyan Kaioken buffed.

Gohan:

Super Saiyan 2 slightly buffed.

Piccolo:

Nail's Aura Buffed; syncing with Nail feels like Fusion-Level Power.

Super Namek now enhances Nail's Aura.

Super Namek drain significantly reduced.

Other Fixes:

Androids 17 and 18 nerfed.

Dinosaurs nerfed.

Ninja buffed.

Destroyers buffed.

Exp rewards increased for several enemies.

Mechanics Added:

The Power Stat has been tuned to reward the player explosively for having higher Power instead of using a flat formula.

Transforming now directly affects ki attack damage and stacks with the Power Stat re-tune.

I'm finishing up the final patch and proofreading my documents for the official release.

I want to thank everyone that's managed to find this subreddit for all of the support up until this point; I know that the project was only recently announced, but the support from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and I can't thank all of you enough for that.

Please keep in mind that though I'm releasing the project soon, this is still a beta and there may be bugs and fixes via a patch later on.

Additional content will likely not be added at this point, but as you can see from the screenshot, something else will be announced soon.

Speed Matters

Ninja are some of the absolute fastest enemies in the game and will outspeed you in base.

All playable characters have a different base speed, but even the fastest characters will find it difficult to keep up with ninja; until you transform.

Power-Ups and Transformations usually increase speed and the speed boosts stack so you can blitz even the fastest enemies in the game.

Bosses

If you've played The vanilla game, you know that bosses are a joke most of the time; you could pretty much just stand in one place and punch.

With access to 3 Senzu Beans, you really can't lose most boss fights in the game unless you purposely hold off from using them.

You'll have very good reason to use those beans now.

Bosses are dynamic and will get tougher as the fight goes on; we know that most of the villains in DBZ are holding back at least half of their power until the fight really gets going, so you'll get the same pressure and feeling that the series is known for, just don't play with your food like a Saiyan.

Don't be like me... there's no point in holding back on bosses; had I went Kaioken in Super Saiyan, the fight would went very differently.

You have multiple ways to boost your power in Kai, just don't forget to use them; some of the bosses will require everything you have, maybe even all 3 of your Senzus.

Power Levels In Kai

In Kai, Power Levels are determined by stats and transformations are calculated using base × modifiers with everything scaled down to be balanced in an rpg.

These power levels are exclusive to the world of Kai and serve to fit the lore and background; The timeline that exists in Kai had a much more potent Black Mist that caused massive spikes in power for all the the enemies affected, far beyond that of even super saiyan level in some cases.

Keep in mind that compared to the Buu Saga, Goku's base was relatively low, so most enemies that the Z Fighters faced during the Android and Cell Saga simply weren't beatable in base, even post time-chamber. (While the Saiyans jumped in power during their training, Base Goku wouldn't have even been able to defeat Android 19 without Super Saiyan.. though it could be close. )

Base form also benefits from Powering-Up; at high levels, Powering-Up is nearly a transformation-level boost in base.

I apologize for the formatting as well; the pictures are actually screenshots from a multi-page document and cropping on mobile is a bit tricky.

Trunks and Vegeta are in fact higher in base because of raw power; they trade efficiency and maintaining the transformation over time for raw damage spikes that finish the job fast.

Cell

Cell is tough in every single form that you fight him in.

Perfect Cell is technically accessible as early as level 40 for the final fight, 30 levels away from max.

In the world of Kai, Power Levels and character levels are essentially the same, but for scale:

Base Goku Level 30: Roughly 15,000,000

Super Saiyan Goku Level 30: Roughly 750,000,000

Base Goku Level 70: Roughly 40,000,000

Kaioken Goku Level 70: Roughly 1,000,000,000 (Stronger than level 30 SS Goku by far!)

Super Saiyan Goku Level 70: Roughly 2,000,000,000

Perfect Cell: Roughly 2,500,000,000

Super Perfect Cell: Roughly 4,500,000,000

Super Saiyan 2 Gohan: Roughly 5,000,000,000

(Keep in mind that unlike in the manga, Goku in Kai can close the gap on Cell using Kaioken with Super Saiyan, but not for long!)

The jump in power from level 30 to 70 feels like spending time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

Because Transformations scale off of your base, you can always be sure that raising your level and stats will give you a bigger boost while transformed.

Perfect Cell is just outside of the range of some of the stronger Z Fighters, such as Vegeta:

Super Saiyan Vegeta Level 70: Roughly 1,800,000,000

Super Vegeta Level 70: Roughly 2,250,000,000 (But Ki drain makes him revert to base too fast to keep the fight going)

The ONLY reason Goku has a chance is because Goku uses Super Saiyan Grade Four, which allows him full power and nearly no ki drain, allowing him to keep his power level consistent against Cell more than 2x the time as Vegeta or Trunks.

All of that being said, Cell is an end-game threat and the final boss.

It's not meant to be an easy fight and I highly recommend you train as much as possible before challenging him... and bring as many Senzu Beans as you can carry.

Please also remember that in Kai, there are enemies that are meant to be stronger than you in the spirit of a true RPG, but if you find yourself hitting a wall, Increase your base first and then try again.

High-Level Areas Are Truly High-Level

High-Level areas give you a real reason to use all of the tools you have in your kit... and you'll need every one of them.

Being able to take enemies down in Base Form means that you've truly become powerful... until something stronger gives you a reason to push yourself even further.
