Incoming CS freshman (P.C. Rossin) — Mac or Windows? Do I need a dedicated GPU?

Hi! I’m an incoming international freshman at Lehigh University majoring in Computer Science in the P.C. Rossin College (Class of 2030).

I’m currently deciding between getting a MacBook or a Windows laptop for college.

A few things I’m wondering:

  • Are Macs fully fine for Lehigh CS courses/workflows?
  • Are there any classes/software that are Windows-only or significantly easier on Windows?
  • Do CS students ever realistically need a dedicated GPU (RTX/CUDA) for AI/ML, data, rendering, etc.?
  • Would a MacBook be enough for most workloads, or is a Windows laptop with dedicated graphics safer long-term?
  • For RAM, is 16GB enough for CS at Lehigh, or would you recommend 24GB on Mac / 32GB on Windows for future-proofing?
  • Is 512GB storage enough for most CS students, or is 1TB worth it for projects/datasets over 4 years?

For context:

  • I don’t game
  • I care a lot about battery life and portability
  • I’ll probably keep this laptop for 4–6 years

Would really appreciate advice from you guys. 🙏

Highschool junior

Hey, I’m currently a high school junior and Lehigh is one of the schools I’ve been looking into recently, so I was hoping to get some honest insight from current students/alumni. One of the biggest things I care about in a college is being surrounded by ambitious and motivated people while also having a strong social/community environment. I’m interested in things like business/startups/tech/AI, so I’m curious what the student culture is actually like around that. I’m also not really a huge party/frat type person, so I was wondering how easy it is to find genuine friends and your people socially. Does the student body feel ambitious overall? Is the environment more collaborative or competitive? What’s the overall vibe like day-to-day, and do students seem genuinely happy there? Would really appreciate any honest insight because I’m trying to understand the actual culture beyond rankings/reputation.

Transfer Waitlisted - Fall 26

Hey guys, so I just got waitlisted for Lehigh University as a transfer student. Does anyone know how to get off the waitlist, and what is the possibility for a past transfer student who got accepted into Lehigh after getting waitlisted?

What is campus culture like?

So Lehigh is my dream school (hoping to ED in the fall!) and I've visited it a ton, but what does the campus culture look like? I do not party and if I go I will commute. I do want to join clubs and form study groups though in order to be social. Is Lehigh a good campus for somebody like me? I'm socially awkward and I don't really know how to talk to people and I have a tendency to obsess over things. But I can be quite social and I do have some friends/acquaintances in all my classes this year. Also is Lehigh cutthroat? My high school is kind of cutthroat and extremely competitive, and I just hate that type of environment. Thanks everyone!

Transfer student financial aid issue

I was accepted to the Lehigh college of engineering for computer engineering today for the class of 29’, but when I checked my financial aid they expect me to pay $69,000 a year in direct expenses. I tried so hard to get in and it is really a slap in the face when my parents are divorced and my single mom only makes around 90k a year. How do they expect me to pay 3/4 of my mom’s salary when she isn’t even helping me pay for college? I was just wondering if anyone had advice on how to potentially get more aid or if I am just out of luck. Any advice would be appreciated.

Calculus at Lehigh

Tomorrow is the AP calculus AB exam. My grade in that class is a C average which isn’t good of course. I would have to get a 4/5 in order to receive credit at Lehigh. However I’m not super confident I can get a 4 and I’ll most likely get a 3. Even if I do get a 4, should I retake calc 1 anyways? I’m not doing great in my class, so I feel as though jumping to calc 2 will just tank my grades since I don’t know how hard Lehigh calculus classes are.

Math at Lehigh

I’m really worries about fulfilling my math credits at Lehigh. I was wondering if it was mandatory to take Calc classes at Lehigh if you didn’t get a four or five for AP calc AB? Can you take another math course to fulfill that math requirement?
