Long Beach says library fence cost $790K. Records show $418K in construction costs

A new fence surrounding an outdoor terrace at Long Beach’s Billie Jean King Main Library cost taxpayers nearly $790,000, according to the city. But public records obtained by NBC4 Investigates show the company hired to build the fence was paid significantly less.
The records show Quality Fence Co. was hired to furnish and install the fencing for an original price of $398,168. A subsequent change order added $20,395.20, bringing the documented fence construction work to $418,563.20.
That leaves a difference of $371,436.80 between the documented fence construction costs and the city’s publicly stated cost for the overall project.
So what accounts for the rest?

Hey Long Beach here are two ways I'm saving money this hot ass summer

I signed up for community solar last year through PowerMarket. I could not myself put solar panels on my place because I lived in an apartment. PowerMarket gave me a way to "buy into" a solar farm. The electricity produced by the solar farm was attributed as a credit on my Southern California Edison bill. PowerMarket then sent me a separate bill where they billed me for the credit on my SCE bill but at a lower rate. In that small apartment my bill was between $60 and $80 per month. I got a breeze during the summer and used the most electricity during the cold months. I am no longer with PowerMarket because I moved to a place where electricity is included in my rent. So now that I no longer live in that apartment I'm willing to share a screenshot from my PowerMarket account. The credit I was getting was about 10% of my bill. Had I been using more watts per month or more watts during peak hours the credit probably would have made even more of an impact.

PowerMarket dashboard

The other way am saving money this summer is on gasoline. For the longest I've been purchasing my gas at Costco because they are consistently the lowest price gasoline and because it's so convenient for me to buy gas just while I'm there shopping. Recently I downloaded the Exxon Mobile app from the Google Play Store. I did this for car washes. The Exxon Mobile on Bellflower and Stearns is my goto drive through car wash. For years you could save your car wash receipts and when you had five receipts you could turn them in and get a free car wash. Well that's changed. So I downloaded the app in order to track my car washes.

In downloading the app I see Exxon Mobile is currently running a promotion. If the user attaches a payment method to the app (my attached payment method is Google Pay so I did not actually give Exxon Mobile any of my credit card information) and then makes purchases THROUGH the app, the user gets credits. The credits are pretty generous. I filled up my gas tank (purchase one) and added a car wash (purchase 2) and paid for both THROUGH the app. I got $5 in credit to use at the pump or in the store. So my next $12 car wash will be only $7 due to my $5 credit. And this does not appear to be a one-and-done promotion. If I keep buying stuff through the app at Exxon Mobile I can keep earning points. If I had an AARP card the points earned per purchase would increase.

So those are just two ways I'm saving dough in Long Beach this hot ass summer. Hope this helps somebody. I am not an employee, contractor or affiliate of PowerMarket or Exxon Mobile by the way.

Long Beach Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan says he does not want to make the millions of dollars in cuts proposed for his department, but understands the difficult financial position facing the city.

5th Annual (fake but real) Beer Walk Festival

Not 100% sure if allowed but I wanted to extend my free personal event I host each year in different cities. It’s a way to bring people together, walk around, and try beer! In the past I have hosted this in San Diego and Anaheim and even with a small size it’s still a blast.

If you would love to know more information leave a comment or message me directly.

To condense what to expect:
-we will walk to several breweries I hand selected where we will work together to try beers
-I make my own goodies bags and try to have enough for everyone
-this year the theme is minions so I ask that those attend are wearing in the theme
-event starts at 11:30am and we will remain at the first location til about 12:20pm (location will be given in my official invitation)
-along the walk there are opportunities to complete tasks to potentially earn a gift at the end
-best part its free to join the event. Donations are 100% appreciated since I pay it all myself. The only cost is your beer at each location we visit.

looking for an ocean-swim setup in Long Beach

My wife and I are moving from the Bay Area to Long Beach, and I’m hoping to find a good place near the ocean where I can swim and then rinse off or clean up afterward.

I currently swim year-round in the bay, and in San Francisco I use the Dolphin Club at Aquatic Park. It has lockers and showers, and a really convenient setup for warming up and changing after a cold-water swim. Is there anything similar around Long Beach or Seal Beach? It doesn’t have to be an actual swim club—a nearby gym, health club within a couple blocks of the beach, beach club, locker room, or even a reliable outdoor shower setup would be great.

Any recommendations from local swimmers would be much appreciated.

Qargo coffee on ocean closing!

The space at the Current is up for rent again. Starbucks pullout of that space and now Qargo. Is it plagued?
I really didn’t like Qargo, the service was horrible although it has been getting better… but the inside felt like a cheap version of Starbucks.
